25.01.2022 Hi all - we are now back from our break. I think this is the first time we have had a complete extended break from work in the last 8 years - no sewing, no emails, no phone calls, the workshop looks exactly like it did when we finished up. So today we will be catching up on all the emails and messages, getting organised and filling some of the orders that came in over our break. Thanks to everyone who has continued to support us in what was a very challenging 2020. We are all looking forward to seeing what 2021 brings.

25.01.2022 Hi all - it is a public holiday here today and whilst we would prefer to be lazing around in one of our Goshawk hammocks we will be in the workshop finishing off some orders, albeit in a more relaxed public holiday kind of way. 22.01.2022 Hi all - We have recently partnered with ReForest Now, based in northern NSW, with a percentage of our sales each month going to assist them in their tree planting program. Their focus is on thoughtful reforesting of cleared land to increase biodiversity within Far North Queensland and Northern NSW. If this essential work is of interest to you then I would encourage you to help support Reforest Now or at the very least go check out what they do, as I know they would welcome any further support.

21.01.2022 Hi all - we have sourced our down from Allied Feather and Down for a number of years now and we have a new shipment being organised now of 800FP Duck Down, 900FP Goose Down, as well a a synthetic loose fill 'down' insulation, and we will also be bringing in Allied's new Down Wash. Given Allied's expertise in processing down they should know a little bit about the most effective way to keep your down gear in pristine condition. So we are excited to be able to offer this to th...e Australian market (and beyond). We are hoping to have this shipment prior to Xmas. We will also be offering a clean and dry service when this arrives, if you are not confident or don't have the capacity to clean your down gear yourself. https://www.tiergear.com.au//product-care-/a-f-d-down-wash

16.01.2022 A couple of purple Quenda's waiting for their final perusal.

16.01.2022 My working day usually starts about 6.30am with filling most of the previous days orders before we walk our kids to school and then move onto sewing for the day. This mornings orders involved splicing a tarp continuous ridgeline.

15.01.2022 A charcoal grey Quenda 165 -10c finished off today. Weight is 580g including the stuff sack. We have a had a bit of a run on charcoal grey quilts with two more being worked on this week.

14.01.2022 Another Quenda quilt nearing completion. Our quilts and hammocks are proudly made in Tasmania, Australia with both imported and Australian made materials. We try to support other Australian manufacturers whenever we can. It always has been one of our core values. Which is why it was so disheartening to see another Australian business release a hammock under quilt recently, which I can only assume is made overseas like the rest of their gear, that had almost identical dimensi...ons to our Mala under quilt. These dimensions are fairly unique to us and I have never seen another quilt with anything near these dimensions. They also use a suspension system similar to our old system but we probably weren't unique in using that system and their will always be some cross over in designs. However those dimensions are a clear indication that our quilt has been copied in my view. They have followed us on Instagram for some time, closely enough to ask to follow both Sarah's and Hannah's personal pages. So they know full well what we offer. I asked the question on their Instagam page whether this was pure coincidence or a case of direct copying and my comment was deleted with no response. As a small Australian manufacturer we are faced with many challenges but I never thought we would have another Australian business copy one of our designs seemingly so blatantly. Unfortunately it may say a lot about their general business ethos and their lack of respect for Australian manufacturing. I am not asking you to only support Australian manufacturing but we should also be supporting ethical business practices whenever we can. Now we are going to move on. Adapt and re-focus. I have deliberately not named this business as I do not want them to be associated with us in anyway. If they are mentioned in the comments it will be deleted.

11.01.2022 The orange inner is proving very popular at the moment. . #madeintasmania

11.01.2022 Our MRT Pouches are proving to be a surprisingly popular item of late and they will be available in a lightweight Auscam very soon. This small pouch weighs 16.3g.

11.01.2022 A 210cm Mala under quilt. 10D inner and outer. Temp rating -4c. Weight is 627g with 380g if 850FP down (and it will be even lighter when we move to 900fp down). It was cut, stuffed and sewn in Deloraine, Tasmania by Hannah, Sarah and myself. The shock cord used in the suspension and draw cords is also Australian made. There is a lot of time, effort and love that goes into making quilts. It is always rewarding to see that end product even though often we don't take the time to enjoy it before packing it up and shipping it out.

10.01.2022 Hi all - just letting you know that after many months waiting our order from Evernew Japan should be heading our way this week and so should be here by the end of the month. With some luck we are also hoping to have in the new ultralight TABI titanium fire pit prior to Xmas. This is made by Belmont Japan and weighs approximately 420g. https://www.tiergear.com.au//ul/stoves/titanium-stove-tabi... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Whqi-Ofrc&feature=emb_logo

09.01.2022 Some weeks you just have to sew on a Sunday. We usually try to avoid working on Sunday but we had a sneaky day off on Friday so here we are sewing Peregrine hammocks, MRT Pouches and finishing off a Quenda quilt.

09.01.2022 A few finished quilts ready to check and post today and then it's onto finishing off the next batch.

08.01.2022 Whilst on our break I had the opportunity to sleep in a tent and remind myself why I prefer to sleep in a hammock whenever I can. Photo by Andrew Gordon of our Goshawk hammock and Mala under quilt which are of course made by Sarah, Hannah and myself in Deloraine, Tasmania.

03.01.2022 Hey all - just a quick update on our quilt offerings. Actually that is a lie. Strap yourself in, it's a long one. DOWN INSULATION Firstly with regards our down we will be offering an option of 800FP grey duck down and 900FP white goose down, both are HyperDry from Allied Feather. These will replace the 850FP white duck down HyperDry we currently offer. The site will be updated shortly to reflect these changes but any current orders for 850FP may receive a free upgrade to 900F...P if we run out of 850FP in the meantime. What are the differences between these offerings? The 800FP will be slightly heavier and won't pack down as small but will be cheaper so for those not worried about weight and pack size this will be the choice for you. The 900FP will be lighter and compress into a smaller size so will be great for those where weight and pack size are the priority. This will also be more expensive obviously. SYNTHETIC INSULATION we have had a few enquiries for synthetic quilts which we used to make but there were a few reasons we stopped. One was the amount of waste generated from using the Climashield Apex which was a continuous filament style of insulation. We could not use this waste in an efficient manner at the time. We also had issues with storage as our workspace is quite small and the Apex was very bulky in rolls. Lastly we preferred the longevity of goose and duck down and the ability to re-use it. For example, we have a customers goose down from his fathers old sleeping bag which is over 40 years of age which we made into a quilt for him. Having said that we are going to trial a loose fill synthetic which is approximately equivalent to a 600FP down, and will mean our waste will be minimal. It will be heavier and pack size will be larger than the 800fp down but will be cheaper in price. The baffle design will be the same as the down quilts and so the time taken to make it will remain the same whereas the Apex continuous filament makes for a much simpler and quicker process meaning labour costs can be kept down. So it will be cheaper than our down quilts but may not be cheaper than comparable synthetic quilts made from Apex. Contact us if you are after a synthetic quilt. Lastly, thanks to everyone waiting such a long time for us to make something for you. We have a long list of orders in and we are working through them as quickly as we can. Currently we have over 100 orders on the books. Hannah is now working an extra day a week, now working 3 days, which has helped us increase our production output so we are hopeful of bringing down our lead times. Sorry for the long post. I am not posting as much on social media these days primarily because we are so busy but also because I have just lost my social media mojo and life is kind of better without it for me but will attempt to get back to more regular posts.

03.01.2022 So it looks like Tier Gear is now run from 100% renewable energy. https://reneweconomy.com.au/tasmania-declares-itself-100-/

03.01.2022 One of the Quenda quilts heading out today with a vibrant colour combination in all 10 denier fabric. A couple of things to note. We are now offering the option of either 800FP duck down and 900FP goose down across all our quilts. I am updating the weights of our quilts on our site and because we offer so many sizing options for the Quenda this will take some time but for the gram counters the 900FP is the one for you - less weight and smaller pack size.... We will also be offering a loose fill synthetic but we need to do some testing prior to making this available. These quilts will be heavier with a larger pack size but at a much reduced price compared to our down quilts. Hopefully these will be available in the new year. Finally I underwent a planned minor medical procedure yesterday afternoon and I will be bombed out on pain killers for a day or two so I am taking the day off, apart from a bit of admin. I should be back on the machines soon.

02.01.2022 One of the fun parts of our job is playing around with different gear combinations. This combination makes for a lightweight and compact setup. Ti Demitasse cup without handle, Ti 500 Mug Pot, Ti Evernew Stove (currently unavailable) and X-Mesh Stove windscreen/pot stand. All fits in the one pot and weighs 155 grams. Just one of many options. . #madeinjapan

02.01.2022 Fozzils are now in stock. For those that don't know Fozzils make a range of bowls, dishes and cups that are light weight and pack flat for storage. They have been around for quite a number of years but have never really been available locally so it's nice to have another option. The Bowlz come in a set of two and weigh just 40g each. https://www.tiergear.com.au//ultral/utensils/fozzils-bowlz... The Solo Pack contains a Bowl, Cup and Dish and weighs 112g in total. https://www.tiergear.com.au//ut/fozzils-snapfold-solo-pack

02.01.2022 There is a decent smattering of Australian made gear in this photo from @cliffandbear. It includes the @terra_rosa_gear bivy, @wildernessthreadworks Luxmore pack and our Quenda quilt.

01.01.2022 MRT Pouches are back and available in purple, blue, red and dark olive (while stocks last).
