25.01.2022 Please feel free to share and ask people to add @gnsiorg to their drawings and #inktober2019 so they can be added to the millions of people participating this year.
25.01.2022 Canberra's melting dystopia - taken just before sunset across the cbd and uni campus as the wind changed direction and began blowing the smoke from the Orroral Valley fire directly towards us. My photo taken 3 Feb 2020 just on sunset.
25.01.2022 More adventures with charcoal and Yorick the classroom prop. #citart #charcoal
19.01.2022 1/31 Botanical - late to the party but starting #inktober2019 now. In a whacky crossover I’ll mix the @gnsiorg science prompt words with medieval illuminations which I plan to paint later with gouache to learn more about limning and other early techniques. #sciart #medievalart
19.01.2022 #1 Inktober It’s been hectic lately since taking on a few roles outside my day job. Daily art has been suffering in some areas but gaining in others as there’s a lot of creating that’s not necessarily on paper. In an effort to get back in the swing of things 2D I’m having a crack at Inktober again. I managed to complete it last year using digital ‘ink’. The key is not to be overly ambitious and just scribble unless you have oodles of spare time. This is a practice session. Mo...re is better than perfection when improving skills http://inktober.com/ So using the Guild of Natural History Illustrators list (GNSI), I’ll be posting a daily doodle. This one during a director’s meeting at work! The evening was spent putting together a colour wheel with class notes on mixing paints that I’m teaching this weekend. Which is typically what I’m doing instead of more drawing or painting! Hopefully these will improve on quieter days [still super chuffed that the first 5 words were my suggestions] #sciartink #inktober2019 #inktober @gnsiorg
16.01.2022 Although I’ve not been posting, there’s been plenty happening as wrangling and learning how to use Photoshop has been underway. Just not happy with the results enough to post pictures just yet. Meanwhile I attended a 2 day bookmaking workshop and learned how to stab and stitch the signatures together, add endpapers, headbands, boards, tapes and cover the whole thing. The book is actually the procedures from the 2018 National Bookbinders Conference so it’s full of useful techniques to try out one day. Mine is the greenish book on top of the fanned out spread.
13.01.2022 Praxis - a slightly more personal post than most people expect on a FB hobby artist’s page but m’eh. You can read or not. Getting things down in words has always been useful to help galvanise thoughts and perhaps my meanderings will resonate with some of you. Feel free to share. I’m looking for fellow travellers Why should social media be any different. Until I have art to show, this can be the tale of an artist’s growth and struggle to organise their thoughts, workspace (...so much clutter), time management and inspiration (other artists keep me going and definitely motivate me eg Struthless) The previous post was written very late last night and this post kinda explains what got me there. Something has snapped inside and I think it’s the on-again, off-again, current dystopic atmosphere in Canberra. Having had everything thrown at us, bar locusts (poor Africa and their current desert locust plague), my DNA has rebooted and motivation is at an all time high. Not sure it’s actually ‘motivation’ per se. More the intensity of MUST do this NOW. Went to bed around 3am and couldn’t sleep as the brain was brimfull with ideas. Finally got to sleep around dawn and started dreaming heavily. The final dream had me bouncing around people in a regular suburban sports event at an oval in parkour style but with slightly superman like powers ie much higher than is humanly possible. Even landed in the *silly 3 point power stance, which was when I awoke laughing at such a movie trope and a general feeling of lightness, unlimited ability and confidence. Now, how to maintain that. *google why it’s silly - bones would be broken badly if any parkour participant tried this. Mostly thigh bones from memory. I’ve had a plan which over the last 3 weeks has gotten me to this point... Might lay it out in the next post while I draw up that list of potentials to focus on as per Struthless’YouTube in previous post #praxis2o2o
08.01.2022 I felt useful creating this piece. It isn't my usual choice of subject matter, but it really ticked all the boxes emotionally. A friend's Nana recently passed away, and with travel to other states not possible, a memory painting was commissioned for display at the ceremony. Every single item has meaning and I feel like I got to know a bit more about this lovely lady. It brought back memories of my own Nana and am thinking of painting a few more.... watercolour, ink, watercolour pencil on Arches 300gsm #lockdownart #memories #tigbeswickillustration
07.01.2022 Yeah so not much drawing of late. Every now and then I recognise that I’ve managed to get caught in an overwhelming oppressive cycle of being locked in to helping others with way too many projects, while not getting my own shit done. Am always left wondering just how I managed to get here, AGAIN, and how to politely extricate myself. Totally my own fault but why does it keep happening? Then this guy comes along and I can’t stop watching his YouTube channel. Some great advice ...given in a beautifully self appraising manner. He’s made helpful vids about that very issue ie if I’m helping other people then I don’t have to work on my own stuff and worry about the end results being judged - totes true. But this most recent vid burns because it describes the scattergun method I tend to output, but luckily, a good suggestion to fix it. This same solution has been offered in other places but never really hit home as much until he voiced it in his unique Struthless way. The difficult decision now is which focus will it be! Which one to choose. Need a 2o2o list and perhaps a poll before deciding because I have ALL the ideas and that is paralysing in itself. Have a listen... tell me what you think.
03.01.2022 A personal reminder that the clear intentions of simpler design is often more powerful than heavily detailed. As one commenter said, this is like a visual haiku. Holocaust Remembrance Day artwork by Si Scott.
