25.01.2022 It’s been a while since our last post due to covid19. I have been stuck in WA since March unable to cross borders due to work. I have been very fortunate in having a great friend in Davin Faux who does drone land surveying to whom I requested to do some aerial shots of the farm after the recent rain. Pls zoom in to capture swales full or close to full this week. Pls reach out to Davin should you require any digital land surveying. I recommend this service 100%. Feel free to call and discuss how Davin can assist your property development.0418 987 556
25.01.2022 The first of the corn harvest. After seeing that rats or possums we’re taking more than their fair share we netted the corn to allow the cobbs to mature for another few weeks. Finally they are look good. Not as well formed as previous years but ok none theless.
23.01.2022 Last season when we preserved our peach harvest we dried a lot in the oven and the dehydrator to mixed results. I was hoping for that really sticky texture but got dried and withered result. This year I tried something different and froze the 19kg harvest of apricots and found that when defrosted they are really intense with flavour and of a jam texture. With this I encouraged the volunteers to defrost all the apricots and dry them until a sticky consistency. The results are what I hoped for. Just like the ones you get from the bulk natural foods store.
23.01.2022 Rainy days at Tiger Hill are days for creative expression indoors. The current volunteers Marie and Kazuhito continue from previous volunteers with labels for trees in the orchard. Various styles of art including cubism, surrealism, Impressionism, pop, Klein have been used for a bit of fun and colour.
21.01.2022 A day of preserving our first batch of tomatoes and zucchini into a pasta sauce. All ingredients from the garden including onion, chilli, peppers, thyme, oregano and parsley. We got 20 x 720ml bottles which equates to one bottle every two weeks for the next year. Seeing how we still have a heap from last year, it will last longer.
19.01.2022 The newest addition to the creature comforts of the bunkhouse in a hand made bean bag from coffee sacks. Thanks Emily and Bert for the time dedicated to this task.
18.01.2022 ‘Another beautiful day at Tiger Hill. Volunteers are grateful to be learning, productive and safe here in a difficult time. We are thinking of all the Tiger Hill family, past present and future and hope all are staying safe and well.’
17.01.2022 Noa and Bert getting into the weeding racket for green manure futures. Broad beans or peas are being soaked for immediate sowing after each bed is complete. It’s a race to get beds dome in time for coming rains as the dams are too low to run the auto irrigation. We use broad beans as a default as they are good producers of nitrogen and a huge biomass of greens to turn into the soil. These guys are learning the complete food production process during this pandemic.
16.01.2022 Indoor sports continued with cushion making from coffee sacks for the new pallet couch in the bunkhouse and bean bag covers for the lounging area by Emily and Bert. All that’s missing here in the Labrador at their feet on a wet and cold day.
14.01.2022 Can anyone help identify this bugger.
14.01.2022 Current volunteers are keeping the farm maintained while I am exiled in WA during this pandemic. I really appreciate the dedication these guys have committed to during my absence.
01.01.2022 Current volunteers reciting some lyrics laid down Bert in the guest book as a parting tribute to their learning here at THP.
01.01.2022 After cleaning the shed and giving the citrus trees a birthday trim and mulch we finish the day with home brew and watermelon before fighting for a space on the coffee sack cushions on the pallet couch.
