24.01.2022 For the second time in a fortnight this week, our gastroscopy service at EVDS has proved that not every horse with symptoms of gastric ulcers should simply be ...treated without evidence through scoping. This horse an 8 yo stock horse gelding , had a dull rough coat, 9 ribs showing , would seem hungry but then stand for 5 hours without eating grass. He also didn’t want to eat his carrots and was girthy. The option to just treat him properly for gastric ulcers was considered and would cost upwards of $600 for 4-8 weeks of treatment. But the better option of scoping him was chosen and revealed that he did not have ANY ulcers - in the pylorus or non glandular stomach - but he had a gastric impaction ! Gastric impaction is diagnosed as a hard ball of feed that should have passed after a suitable period of fasting. This horse had the standard pre-scoping protocol of fasting for 18 hrs and no water for 6 hrs. His stomach should have been close to empty! Gastric impactions can last weeks to months and cause symptoms similar to stomach ulcers. Causative factors include gulping/rushing of feed, feeds that swell, teeth problems, and stalky hay/straw being fed. This horse had 3 of those factors, plus was only been fed once daily in a paddock with little grass. Treatment of these involves administering large volumes of diet coke and water , over several hours to days, and rescoping until the hard ball has dissolved and passed. This horse received 4.75 ltrs of diet coke over 3 tubings and 4 hours and that did the trick. He was scoped again yesterday to check his pylorus and non glandular stomach and all was good. No impaction. The reason diet coke works is that is has a pH of 2.6 from the phosphoric and carbonic acid, so the acid, along with the bubbles, help to penetrate and break up the cellulose fibre impaction. Regular coke has far too much sugar and could cause the horse to get laminitis. There were NO ill effects from the diet coke or the scoping and fasting procedure. Even within a week, this horse’s coat, body condition and energy levels have improved a lot. He has continued to gain weight and be very healthy in the 3 wks following the treatment. 20.01.2022 Stolen from walker Helen Walker. Great read
20.01.2022 The reason I shoe! Predominantly 75% of all the horses I see every 4-6 weeks are barefoot and do really well with a balanced trim and Hoof Armor or boots as ne...eded. I think it’s important to remember that trimming is a subtractive process only, so if you can’t address what the foot needs through removing material, you’re stuck! This is why I offer glue-on composite shoes as a tool in my practice. To add protection, support, vertical depth, and/or mechanics as needed to help the horse. This is an example of a horse that was being managed barefoot by her owner, with very good support and technical assistance. But they were getting nowhere because the horse was growing very slowly and there wasn’t enough foot to make any significant changes. I was asked to consult because of the lack of progress. It was clear to me I could help this horse best by building vertical depth with my shoe, glue and hoof casting. This is before and after shoes over 4 months (3 shoeings). Super happy with the results and so is she. *no diet changes were made during this time!
18.01.2022 , & They're cute right! Oodles became a fad over a decade ago, it started with the Lab x Poodle that was called a Labradood...le, a dog bred to be a Guide Dog for those allergic to dogs back in the early 80's, as you could probably fathom by the lack of Labradoodle Guide Dogs, the project was not successful for various reasons relating to the dogs suitability. What happens when a type of dog becomes a fad is they become a money-making opportunity, inexperienced individuals, some with hearts of gold and others only with $$$ in their eyes jump on board and start breeding for demand - right now we're seeing that with French Bulldogs who for now seem to have overtaken the Oodle craze. Inexperienced or simply unethical breeders went ahead and started breeding programs without understanding structure, coat genetics, disease genetics, genetics in general and temperament so what we started to see was dogs with poor structure that meant many would end up with expensive surgeries to fix conditions such as slipping patella's - this is where the kneecap of the dog dislocates, they were also being affected by conditions such as Hip Dysplasia and that's just the start of it. ' ' - consumers were led to believe that by crossing 2 breeds you would get rid of the genetic conditions associated with those 2 breeds but what they were effectively doing was potentially doubling up on problems because they had very little understanding of those issues and the mode of inheritance so they would breed for an example, a Poodle to a Cavalier that were either affected by the same condition or came from a bloodline where that problem occurred. Take-home point, if you breed a dog with a structural fault to another dog with the same structural fault then you're not creating hybrid vigour, you're creating a problem. Let us have a look at one of the most common Oddles, the Cavalier x Poodle commercially named the 'Cavoodle' (there is no such breed) and what conditions they are more prone to: () Diabetes Mellitus Cushings Disease Allergies Atopic dermatitis Otitis Externa Pododermatitis Sebaceous adenitis Sebaceous gland tumour Periodontal disease () Allergies Atopic dermatitis Sebaceous adenitis () Diabetes Mellitus Cushings Disease Allergies Atopic dermatitis Sebaceous gland tumour Epilepsy Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) (X-linked) Periodontal disease Chronic Valvular Disease (CVD) Keratitis sicca Atopic dermatitis Anal sac impaction Otitis externa Syringomyelia You may notice that ' ' occurs in both breeds so breeding 2 breeds together with the same issues does not make it Hybrid Vigor, it just increases the risk of that condition occurring, no different to breeding 2 purebred dogs of the same breed together who are affected or come from lines with dogs affected by that same condition. This condition is often seen in dogs with straight stifles, the dogs rear legs don't bend at the knee in a standing position as much as they should, this also means that they are at an increased risk of knee injuries. Cruciate ligament injuries are always one we worry about in such dogs whether it be from a strained cruciate to a fully torn one that needs surgery. If a Poodle x is a dog you really really want to buy this would be my advice: - Don't buy from an individual who doesn't do health testing for the conditions the breeds they are using are affected by - these are not tests carried out by the local vet, they are often DNA tests, Imaging and so forth - I strongly suggest you do a lot more research into this before looking at any Poodle x. - Ask what the grades are of the Patella's of both Dam and Sire - Patella's are graded 1-4, anything 2.5 and above is generally considered a surgical case. If they can't answer this question, I would suggest you look for a different breeder, I would also encourage you to consider a registered ANKC purebred breeder who does all the relevant tests for their breeds and does not breed on with dogs with structural issues. - A crossbreed should not cost you more than what a purebred does, so please don't pay thousands of dollars, especially for one whose Dam & Sire have had no genetic & health screening. - Please never buy one from someone you can't meet in person and see the conditions the dogs live in - Oodles are often overbred in large-scale breeding facilities and sold online and through pet shops. - If you're looking for a low/no shedding dog then a Poodle x is not necessary for you as it cannot be guaranteed what their coat will be like - they may shed a lot and need a lot of grooming. - Get Pet insurance before you go to your first Vet visit so nothing can be called an existing condition by your insurance company. - If your dog is diagnosed with slipping patella's or another ortho conditions, please ask your Vet for a referral to an Animal Physio, here in Sydney we recommend Whole Family Health at St Mary's - they may be able to help you avoid surgery or if surgery is required, they can help prepare your dog for this and help them recover as well. No matter how lovely the breeder of your current or future Oodle is, if they're not genetic testing, health screening then they're not doing the right thing for the dog and they don't deserve your money. Whilst Mother Natures gives no guarantee's, selecting a breeder who is trying their hardest to breed healthy puppies by doing all the relevant tests is the right place to start. There's plenty of very adorable and unique purebred dogs you may like to consider and talk to breeders about the screening they do and if they are a suitable match for you, such as: Affenpinscher https://www.dogzonline.com.au/b/community/affenpinscher.asp Bedlington Terrier https://www.dogzonline.com.au//comm/bedlington-terrier.asp Bichon Frise https://www.dogzonline.com.au/br/community/bichon-frise.asp Cavalier King Charles Spaniel https://www.dogzonline.com.au//cavalier-king-charles-spani Chihuahua (Long Coat) https://www.dogzonline.com.au//com/chihuahua-long-coat.asp American Cocker Spaniel https://www.dogzonline.com.au//community/american-cocker-s Finnish Lapphund https://www.dogzonline.com.au//commun/finnish-lapphund.asp Griffon Bruxellois https://www.dogzonline.com.au//comm/griffon-bruxellois.asp Havanese https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/community/havanese.asp Japanese Chin https://www.dogzonline.com.au/b/community/japanese-chin.asp Japanese Spitz https://www.dogzonline.com.au//community/japanese-spitz.asp Keeshond https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/community/keeshond.asp King Charles Spaniel https://www.dogzonline.com.au//co/king-charles-spaniel.asp Lhasa Apso https://www.dogzonline.com.au/bree/community/lhasa-apso.asp Lagotto - Check this one out https://www.dogzonline.com.au//commu/lagotto-romagnolo.asp Lowchen https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/community/lowchen.asp Maltese https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/community/maltese.asp Papillon https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/community/papillon.asp Pekingese https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/community/pekingese.asp Pomeranian https://www.dogzonline.com.au/bree/community/pomeranian.asp Miniature Poodle https://www.dogzonline.com.au//commun/poodle-miniature.asp Toy Poodle https://www.dogzonline.com.au/bree/community/poodle-toy.asp Schipperke https://www.dogzonline.com.au/bree/community/schipperke.asp Yorkshire Terrier https://www.dogzonline.com.au//commu/yorkshire-terrier.asp Important note about this post: This post is not a beat up on the Oodle, it is simply putting a myth to bed about Hybrid Vigor and outlining how you can make safer choices. We still have a long way to go to understand the mode of inheritance in a lot of diseases but we can first start by not supporting breeders who breed 2 dogs together who have the same defect/fault.
17.01.2022 Our beautiful cat Max and I met the most amazing woman today- Deb Hall Our poor Maxi boy was having some trouble with his hind legs, he was walking very unste...adily, not jumping up on anything anymore and was walking only a few steps before lying down again. On the advice of Cherie Reid I took him to Tigrada Holistic Family & Animal Care. Within minutes Deb had identified the issue and performed a treatment on him. She placed Max back down on the ground and he was walking properly again - amazing ! He liked Deb so much he went straight back to her to say thank you. Max, Carl, Audrey and I are all very thankful

11.01.2022 BITTED Dressage Riders call for BITLESS equality in Dressage in 2021! USA riders who's horses can no longer be bitted due to previous dental interventions, are ...calling for their horses to be allowed to compete in modern bitless bridles on sporting fairness and welfare grounds. Mouth changes can occur to any horse, preventing the horse from being able to tolerate a bit. Is it fair on the horse or the rider to no longer be allowed to compete? ***93% of all equestrians in a recent survey said YES bitless should be allowed in all competition! The USA riders are calling on your support to give feedback to USDF before 1st JANUARY 2021. See link feedback: https://www.usdf.org/competitions/usefrulechanges.asp . WORLD BITLESS ASSOCIATION sent a supporting letter to USEF on the 1st September 2020 and has also made a further submission by the USEF website feedback form. "WBA would suggest that if a horse prefers, or is medically required, to use a bitless bridle, then being forced to wear a bit to comply with the rules, becomes a serious welfare issue. WBA recognises that the welfare of the horse is of primary concern to USEF and as a progressive and forward-thinking Federation we hope that USEF would agree that part of their role as a National Federation is to encourage take up of equestrianism and support those equestrians that wish to compete, bitted and bitless" *** WBA Welfare Survey General Report https://worldbitlessassociation.org/.../the-general.../ WBA Position Statement regarding bitless equality. https://worldbitlessassociation.org/position-statement/ #dressage #Bitless #horse #horsesofInstagram #sporthorse #worldbitless See more

10.01.2022 To all EMMETT Practitioners, A Farewell to 2020 and the days I can’t reclaim, and a welcome to the New Year of 2021 with new hopes, new dreams and new possibili...ties. Whilst it was a challenging year, 2020 has given us the opportunity to come together, to listen and to action the many requests from practitioners. The development of an EMMETT International Federation - a place to support and share our knowledge with like-minded therapists. Also releasing and refining specialised courses using the principles of the Emmett Technique. My enjoyment in 2020 has been in sharing many experiences with other therapists. The excitement in the coming years will be creating the opportunity for all therapists to continue the sharing of their experiences, bringing benefit to both therapists and their clients. I believe it is time to step back and focus on the completion of programs which have been started. I believe 75 years ago my mother gave me a menu to life on my day of birth. It was an ‘a la carte’ menu. This came as a four-course sitting with a multiple-choice selection. The first sitting was the starter, a 12-year training program of first experiences, a mixture of observations, tastes, words and emotions. The second sitting was the appetiser. This choice fed my curiosity, gave me beliefs, appreciation and understandings. This also gave me an appreciation on the selection of the main course. A course that took 15 years towards completion. The main course became a 47- year meal. This has been the major period of development and growth in my selected interests. A time of nourishment for the mind and the strengthening of beliefs, and my greatest learning period. Now as I look back at my menu of life, I realise that 75 years have passed, and the time has come to select the last course. Will it be the sweetness of the dessert or the savoury of the cheese platter? Then again maybe a mix of them both ! I look forward to the excitement of this selection, and may it be as enjoyable and fulfilling as my previous choices. This sitting has the potential to last me 25 years. This would be the completion of the selected menu - my life. My thoughts of good health, happiness and prosperity be with you all. I wish your menu of life to be a full and enjoyable one. Best wishes in 2021 Ross Emmett

06.01.2022 Have you noticed that your cat has a saggy belly? Kitty hasn't eaten too many treats; it's actually a normal part of your cat's anatomy! The technical term for... this belly flap, which can often be seen swaying from side to side when a cat moves, is called the primordial pouch. This loose skin and padding at the belly provides extra protection for the abdominal area during fights when bunny kicking with their hind legs. It insulates and protects internal organs and allows a cat to store extra food in its belly. (Important for our ferals who sometimes go days without eating.) It also allows a cat freedom of movement to fully stretch and extend the back legs when running at high speed or jumping. Some people believe that spaying or neutering causes this primordial pouch. This is a myth. All felines, regardless of their size, shape, or sex have this extra flap of skin (including lions and tigers). Even cats who lose weight due to diet or illness still have these belly flaps. (Many thanks to My Feral Fix for sharing this information!) #TNR #spayandneuter #primordialpouch
