03.01.2022 Tilpa Hotel & Pub Tilpa, New South Wales Situated in the far West Outback of New South Wales, along the Darling River....130km North of Wilcannia....189km South... of Bourke! Like many Outback towns, Tilpa is famous for it's Pub! Operating since 1894, a 123 year old attraction made from corrugated iron and timber with it's walls slathered in traveller graffiti, perched on the Western banks of the Darling River! Set in semi-arid, dead flat terrain with red dirt highlights, the Legendary Outback village of Tilpa was once a busy port, bustling with paddle steamers, servicing the river trade and local agriculture. With two Pubs, a school, post office, police station and a general store, it was a cross road in the outback as the bridging of the river served as a stock crossing and port for the wool clip being transported down to Wentworth and on to Echuca and Adelaide! Today very little remains in the Tiny Outback town of Tilpa, with an Iconic Pub and a population of just 6....but the Pub is not all that Tilpa is famous for! It is here you will find the shortest Heritage Walk in Australia, possibly even the world, with a sign outside the Pub and another across the road in front of the only Boer War Memorial, a Commemorative to Harry ( The Breaker) Morant, who was controversially executed by the British Army for murdering Boer Prisoners! Tilpa also has the only cemetery in Australia that doesn't have anyone buried in it! Experience the real Outback as the red dirt tracks wind through the scrub, cutting a path across the vast Darling flood plain, through isolated communities to the the bleakest of landscapes with the emptiness occasionally broken by glimpses of emus and wild feral goats. Parched with dry throats we reach the Tilpa Pub! Pulling up stumps at the bar, the walls and roof covered in graffiti made for an intriguing read while knocking back a cold one! Autographs, dry wit and messages left behind from the hundreds of travelers that pass through each year, and for a donation to the Royal Flying Doctors Service you can scrawl a message on the inside walls! A place to come and meet the local characters and hear true stories and tall tales from this part of the world and if you should stay awhile there is accomodation at the Pub or a free camp ground at the Tilpa Weir just 6km up the river! A Pub not to be missed! #TilpaHotel #Tilpa #OutbackNewSouthWales #VisitNSW #Australia #Aussiepubs #Outbackpubs #Roadtrip #Travel #Exploreaustralia #GreatAussiePubs #Offthebeatentrack
