15.01.2022 FINGER LIMES. (Microcitrus australisica) Native to Australia, the finger lime produces delicate caviar-like crystals that burst out of the cylindrical shape fruits. The cylindrical shape fruit grows up to 100mm long and have thin skin appearing glossy due to the oils contained in the rind. The juice produced is similar to that of a standard lime. Thrives in a protected position in well drained soil and will tolerate light frost. Fertilize regularly but lightly with citrus food. These crystals can be used to make chutneys, jams, sauces as well as for garnishes. Freezing the fruit enables all year round availability as it doesn't destroy the flavours or textures when thawed..

06.01.2022 I went to visit one of our lovely customers the other day to help her with the next part of her garden and what a joy it was to see the first part I helped her with about 18months ago looking so good! The Acoma Crepe Myrtle foliage has coloured up early and the Prunus Elvins is only just starting. It's a bonus to have two different deciduous trees with different colouring up times. These two also flower at different times too, spring and summer. All these little things he...lp make the garden interesting to look at all year round. What you can't see in the first photo is the lovely bright winter red of the Nandina or the buds of the perennial Statice and Kangaroo Paws. The second and third photos show different angles of how the garden looked in spring. Prunus Elvins has finished flowering and the understorey is showing off. We recommended lots of plants that the little birds love to visit as our customers spend many an hour watching them visit the plants and the bird bath. Year round colour comes from the Variegated Dianella and the Silver Convolvulus plus the everchanging Nandina. This style of mixed garden looks great when finished off with a hedge to help link all the garden beds together. Here Bush Christmas Lilly Pilly was used. Tips for the Garden No 3. - What to think about when choosing your plants 1. Read the label, how big does it grow? 2. When does it flower or will the plant provide foliage contrast? 3. Is it hardy and suitable for your location? Ask the staff, please! 4. When choosing trees, think of the mature size, is it right? 5. Will all the trees be flowering at the same time or be making changes throughout the year? 6. One of the joys of living in the hills is the variety in the garden during the seasons. Make the most of it by choosing plants that do different things at different times of the year.
