In my opinion - No. Strength training targets the big powerful muscles and creates power, explosion and size (Hypertrophy) In Pilates, the goal is to target the smaller muscles which are responsible for stabilising our joints. These same muscles are often overpowered when lifting heavy weights (strength training) and so are very rarely used. This is why your first Pilates class feels so awkward!! ... 03.01.2022 Pilates = A Healthy Spine Old Joe Pilates once said "you are as old as your spine" After hearing that you probably just diagnosed yourself as old ! Or perhaps that your lower back and neck pain must mean the ageing process has officially begun...... There is an antidote and its called movement....or more specifically Pilates. These Pilates movements work to precisely position the spine into its capable positions. An anatomy refresher! We have 3 separate spinal curves: 1. neck (Cervical) 2. upper/middle (Thoracic) 3. lower back (Lumbar) We have 4 possible spinal positions: 1. Flexion (bending forwards) 2. Extension (bending backwards) 3. Lateral Flexion (bending sideways) 4. Twisting / Rotation So with your 3 spine curves and 4 positions - thats a total of 12 different movements! Ask yourself, does your spine experience these positions and how often ? It is the balanced and frequent Movement in and out of these positions that will keep your spine healthy and happy. There is no better way than with Pilates Pilates classes are on Wednesdays 7pm in Randwick, 175 Alison Rd, (Close to Belmore Rd). $15 flat rate.
