25.01.2022 High quality, instrument grade Tasmanian Blackwood. The fiddleback figure in this is simply amazing. The best quality material I have ever had in my possession. Now to wait for it to dry properly before I can use it. See you in six months or so.

25.01.2022 This arrived in the post today. A prize from a group I am involved in. These are probably from the early seventies and have never been used. They haven’t even had a final hone on the blades. The steel will be very good in this set. They will make for great user chisels. Lucky me.

22.01.2022 Well. That works. A bit of sealant on the joins and this is good to go. I have quite a few more to make. They will be much quicker now I understand the process. Makers gotta make.

21.01.2022 The makers community is a wonderful place to be. I made, for a shoemaking friend, a last peg. It took my 10min and a dollar for the bolt. I can’t charge for that. But, Lisa @atomic_martini turned up with this today as thanks. I’m very, very grateful. It was indeed a pleasure to make for you.

21.01.2022 The next step of 52. Yep, 52 processes to make my Lob Up stool. These are tall ones. One set is spoken for. The sharp corners are relieved with a small round over to create a soft appearance and feel. The insides of the narrow leg have stopped round overs. Accurate marking is required to get that right. This work is done without interruption. Concentration is required. Good methods help a lot.

20.01.2022 A test fit to make sure everything is hunky dory before I cut the hinges in this batch of 9. Always check, always.

20.01.2022 Leg frame for the bed. Mortises squared. Tenons cut and fitted. And then I found the error I made in marking out. I cut the shoulder at the wrong angle. But, I recovered. I recut the shoulders leaving a tiny bit of thickness in the tenon that I can pare away. Being a craftsman in any field doesn’t mean you don’t make mistakes. It is the difference between scrapping the work, or making it work and taking onboard the learning. Cheers

19.01.2022 Another batch of Lob Up stools on the bench today. I had the opportunity to test a new process that has worked quite well. Incremental improvements in the overall quality will result. I love it when a plan comes together. Though I do have to document the process change. In the background you can see a batch of panels for a new version. I have made a couple of samples so the next step is a batch run. The math involved in this change is a bit more than most think. The reveal will be soon.

18.01.2022 Some things are happening over @the_satis_factoryshop Making for wholesale orders. A lot of my contract production work will be featured over there so this place can focus on my furniture making.

18.01.2022 Tenon shoulders trimmed. Nice and crisp. Primary shaping done on the legs. The shaping will be finished by hand with sharp spokeshaves. The rail between the legs will be done this afternoon. Then assembly can take place. Getting closer.

17.01.2022 Victorian Ash. All stacked away. I did have quite a bit in the rack before. But I did need more 75x38, and a lot of it for one job. I also purchased some 150 x 25 that may become a standard in one of my lines. And experiment to come. I now carry good stocks of three sizes. 100x 25, 125x25 150x 25 and 75x 38. All rough sawn guaged stock with no collapse. I regularly get 22mm dressed size from the 25mm material. I’m happy to sell small amounts at prices that are better than the big green shed for a better quality material. Ask me for my price list.

16.01.2022 Yep, that is the fit we are looking for. Proper fitting of hinges has a better appearance and the rebate has a function as well. The edge of the hinge is supported so as to eliminate twist and racking in service. The rebate should be the exact width and length of the hinge. The depth should be exactly the thickness of the hinge leaf. Nearly doesn’t cut the mustard here. @ Clontarf
