23.01.2022 Food waste solution Timbertop Estate residents will soon have an environmentally responsible way to dispose of food waste through their green waste bins. From Monday 28 September, all food scraps, including fruit and vegetables, cooked and uncooked meat, dairy products, processed foods and more, can be placed in the green waste bin to be composted into nutrient rich soil for Victorian farms and gardens. The new service will provide a solution to the problem of food waste in ...the shire. Around 32% of Cardinia Shire’s household waste is spoiled food or food scraps, which currently goes straight to landfill. When food waste decomposes in landfill it produces methane a harmful greenhouse gas and creates leachate a toxic landfill liquid that can pollute the land, ground and waterways. Residents who already have a green waste bin will receive a free ‘food in green waste bin’ kit including a benchtop kitchen caddy, flyer and sticker during the rollout period of 28 September to 19 October 2020. Once received, it can be used immediately. Ratepayers can order a green bin any time of the year. The annual fee for 20202021 is $123.20 for the 240L green bin or $90 for the 120L green bin. Green bins will continue to be collected fortnightly and are available in two sizes: the standard 240L bin and a new smaller 120L bin for smaller households with less garden waste needs. Learn more about the service at a free online information session on Thursday 10 September from 7pm-8pm or Saturday 12 September from 10.30am-11.30am. To book or for more information, visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/greenwaste To order a new or additional green bin, visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/orderbins, phone 1300 787 624 or email [email protected]. Rental tenants will need to contact their property manager or landlord. People who have a compost bin at home can continue to use it. Cardinia Shire Council offer rebates of up to $50 for Cardinia Shire residents who buy a compost bin, worm farm or mulcher visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/wasterebates for more information. See more
21.01.2022 A BUBBLE OF CANINE COMFORT: When Kaduna Park resident Mayuri Gupta adopted her dog, Bubbles, in February she had no idea just how important the Maltese toy po...odle cross would be in helping her navigate the loneliness and anxiety of life in lockdown. Mayuri, who works in project management for a solar energy company, moved into her new home in March just as the COVID-19 pandemic was taking hold. Mayuri suddenly found herself working from home in a new suburb, isolated from friends and colleagues, far away from her family who all live overseas. Her one constant companion has been her 'moodle' Bubbles who she describes as a loving "fluff ball". "I have been in Melbourne for 4 years and have zero family in the country and moving to a new country in your 30s makes it a bit difficult to make friends," Mayuri said. "Just as I moved in, I was asked to start working from home and my family had to cancel their plans to travel to Melbourne to see my house. I was heartbroken." Shortly after moving in, Mayuri gathered Bubbles in her arms and the two held each other. They then got on with the task of making their new house a home. "We did everything together. She would sit right next to me while I unpacked stuff, followed me around the house, slept when I slept, stayed awake when I did, licked my tears when I cried when I got overwhelmed," said Mayuri. "Bubbles has been amazing." Before moving to Kaduna Park, Mayuri's home was an apartment in Glen Iris. She liked the Berwick /Officer area and initially wanted to buy at Timbertop Estate. However, by the time she was ready to commit to her own home, Timbertop had practically sold out, which was when Mayuri discovered Parklea's new project at Officer South. After viewing land at Kaduna Park, Mayuri and her mum, who was visiting from India at the time, were heading back to Glen Iris when her mum told Mayuri to turn around and sign on the dotted line. "We had got all the way out to the Narre Warren freeway exit when we turned around and came back and signed up. It was definitely the right decision," said Mayuri, laughing at the memory. "There was a vibe about this place. I like the greenery and the whole concept of community is really important to me. Everyone talks to everyone here. When I lived in an apartment I didn't even know my neighbours. At Kaduna Park when you go out for a walk everyone says hi. "I can feel this is a good place and I know I will be happy here." Mayuri grew up with dogs in her native India. Her mother's family had show dogs and she volunteered for animal rights organisations as a child. She has filled many lockdown hours teaching Bubbles tricks. "I had so much fun training Bubbles to do tricks and follow commands. She can roll, jump, dance and stand on two legs. She even has a little wardrobe and wears boots on her walks. "She watches me. Anything I do she wants to do too. She is super intelligent. If I show her something three times, by the fourth time she knows how to do it. "If she can't see me she will stand on two legs and dance around to get my attention. "If I'm cooking she will stand next to me like a mother-in-law asking 'What are you putting in there? Are you sure that's enough pepper? "She gauges my behaviour. She senses if I'm stressed or if I cry she comes and sits next to me and put her two paws on my legs and licks me as if to say 'Don't cry, you got me'." When restrictions start to lift, Mayuri plans to return to the office at least part-time and has hopes of being able to take Bubbles with her. "My work is pet friendly. I took her to work once and everyone loved her. I love her so much I can't imagine not being with her. "They say dogs need humans but I think in my case I needed Bubbles as I don’t know if I could have stayed this sane, happy and content without her, cut off from everyone and everything I know." Cardinia Shire Council pet regulations: Cardinia Shire requires that all dogs and cats be microchiped and registered as soon as they turn 3 months old. Cats also need to be desexed before being registered. Owners get a discount on dog registration fees if the dog is desexed. Pets must wear a lifetime registration tag on their collar at all times. Owners may be fined if they don't register their pet or renew its registration or it's found not wearing a lifetime registration tag.
