25.01.2022 Did you know it’s estimated that we have between 20-60,000 thoughts per day? Let’s be conservative and break that down to 1000 per hour. It’s a new week....are you having the same thoughts you had last week? Do you even know what your thoughts are, do you observe them, catch them and even talk to them? ... Being the observer of your thoughts gives you the power to thank the ones that don’t get you closer to the life you want and then politely tell them you won’t be needing them today, thanks all the same! You can then create a new one, a better one. One that gets you closer, not further, from whatever it is you want. Make your 1000 thoughts per hour ‘better’ ones. Thoughts lead to actions and actions form your day- week- life. This method of self awareness is just one process I teach. WATCH THIS SPACE I’ll be holding small MIND GYM classes on the Gold Coast as soon as venues start to open. If this is something that interests you I’d love to hear from you. #mentalhealthawareness #selfawareness #mindfulness #themindgym #ruok #menshealth #mentalfitness

23.01.2022 RETREAT A passage in the I CHING, which I love, talks about RETREAT. It uses the idea that an army in battle doesn’t always need to be ‘on the attack’.... And the same applies to us. You don’t always need to be pushing, progressing, making wins, building empires. There’s a time for that and a time for rest, light thinking, reflecting, playing. For a great army they might also be doing some strategising. But mostly REPLENISHING. Which is what the MIND GYM’S doing at the moment. But I AM ‘reading’ via SRIBD a book called ‘ The End of Mental Illness’ by Daniel G Amen. Which is such an eye opener. He sees mental illness as a disease of the brain. In his psychology practice Amen scans the whole brain using brain SPECT imaging which looks at blood flow to the organ that regulates so much of us. From there his clinic treats the client based on where activity is lacking in the brain. It seems to be that there are links galore between the activity of your brain and mood disorders. And many of them are very treat-able with lifestyle changes, nutrition and detoxification. WOW!! You know, generally, what you need to do for heart health but what about your brain? There’s just so much good in this book and I’ll talk about it more later. Our brains are the consistency of butter so head trauma, even heading a soccer ball can cause damage. AGAIN WOW! Just a few things a day will improve your brain health: * Keep learning new things. Every time you do your brain lights up so continue learning. * Water. Stay hydrated with good water. * Get good dietary fats in weekly (brains are 60% fat). Fatty fish, avo’s and nut etc. * Movement. About 90 minutes per week for oxygen supply to the whole body. .Oh and sleep is so important. 7-9 hours per day is about the best thing you can do for every aspect of health. These are such do- able changes to make. How are you going with these at the moment? Amen clinics. #mindbodyconnection #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #selfhelp

22.01.2022 Some great perspective on modern psychology and the complexity of applying medical science to such complex animals. As we are.

21.01.2022 Is there a ‘Be Nice to your Real Estate agent’ week? Maybe there should beread on. I thought it would be interesting to know which occupations experience high rates of depression, so have done a bit of google research on mental health pages. Below is a summary of vocations that consistently rate high in depression, poor lifestyle and even suicide. While most of these articles come out of the USA, I think it’d be a fair assumption that Australia would be similar. ... Bear in mind that at any time 6.2% (this number from ABS) of the population in Australia would describe themselves as being depressed. Most of the list below (in smaller numbers studied than the Australian Bureau of Statistics) are double or more than the general population figure of 6.2%. * Real Estate. Surprised? Me too but almost every list had Real Estate in the top 3. * Social workers. Aged care and child workers. * Legal services- often a mention of drug and alcohol issues and and depression. * Arts/Entertainment. * Food services- especially table staff. * Health care (hospital workers). * Teachers. * Sales people. * Firefighters and ambos. * Vets -rising rates of suicide. * Construction. So what’s the message here? There definitely seems (mostly) to be a thread of service, giving types of vocations. Perhaps where the balance between give and take is lop-sided either financially or emotionally? Besides be nice to these people (you should be nice to everyone BTW). But maybe next time the plate of food comes out or you rub shoulders with your kids teacher you could give them a bunch of gratitude.

20.01.2022 MINDTIP Asking good questions It’s so easy to have the same thoughts day in day out........ -Too hard. -The worlds screwed. -Why me? -Good things never happen to me. -I’m sick of this shite. And on it goes. Never-endingly. What if you learnt to see those thoughts, say hi to them and replace them with a great question? EG How do I want to be today? How would I like this day to go? What type of friend/parent/boss/employee etc would I like to be today? Try it. Worked for me this morning and I got to see this..... Happy Monday #mindseteducation #mindsetiseverything #happymonday #mentalhealth

18.01.2022 Some attributes of an athlete.... Strength Flexibility Balance... Speed Stamina Accuracy What if your mind could improve in these areas? You would manage stress better. Move through anxiety. Reduce anger and frustration. Feel more focus. Pull yourself out of rubbish thoughts. I’ve been wondering why there are Gyms, Studios, Aquatic centres, Dojo’s, Cross-fit for our body obsession...... But no gyms for our minds. Soon there will be. A weekly class for you to ‘work out’ your mind just like an athlete works on these qualities. Every week a different theme and/or aspect where we slowly build your mental athleticism. #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #selfhelp #personnaldevelopment #counselling #goldcoastcounsellor #ruok #menshealth #teeneagehealth #onewave #mensmentalhealth #middleagedmen #mindgym #justbeyourself

17.01.2022 VALUES Throw in the towel or tap into what’s important and keep tapping away? This was at NZ Ironman- Taupo.... As this photo shows I could hardly get my feet off the ground this day. I remember getting off the bike thinking ‘how am I going to run 42K’ because my legs were already cramping. Life’s like that isn’t it? Sometimes you don’t know what to say next, do next, its all cloudy and confused in your head. Easier option would be to roll over, have a scroll, blame your bad luck, say ‘not today’. OR. Stand for something important to you. Tap into a great value that talks to you. Today I’m not giving up on doing good shit because perseverance is big for me. Do good for my sons future... and your kids too.... and the planet.... my start from scratch biz... for those being really challenged by fear and anxiety. And it just FEELS good to do good. Ps it’s ok to be rubbish sometimes, i do that well too! Peace #persevere #mindbodyconnection #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth

16.01.2022 Yes we all love the dopamine hit from buying something new. On the other hand there’s loved and worthy stuff that’s used, just sitting around with plenty still to give. And bringing them back to life and putting them to use to life gives you a bloody good feeling as well.... This old girl I bought cheap and beat up years ago, we’ve had so much fun. She’s almost my favourite. So I’ve sanded her back, patched the cracks and holes and given her a new shiny skin. Sure she’s a bit yellow and bumpy but actually I couldn’t care less. And the environment gods love me too because every time you buy new another unit gets put on the production line. Some waves now please. #newsurfboard #thereisnoplanetb

16.01.2022 When people find out I did 5 Ironman Triathlons and over 20 half IM they often say ’I could never do that’. For me, I never had a doubt & was able to see it, plan it and just go ahead and do it. Sports have always come naturally to me, not that I’ve been at a high level, but to get to my potential. Because I just had no doubts. ... Other areas of my life I’ve had plenty of doubts & had to work through and shift all types of thoughts/ beliefs that have pulled me back. Especially in money and relationships. Goddam so many years of lessons! Doubts.....What you tell yourself about what you are, what you can and can’t do. How you think about the world. They creep in everywhere. Think about it, they (thoughts) become your reality. ESPECIALLY NOW IN ‘WORLD COVID’ WHERE THERE’S SO MUCH UNKNOWN All my adult life I’ve read & studied about how to reach for potential. And tried to apply what works to myself. From all that I’ve developed ‘Mind Gym’ where you will learn to- * Transform your doubts & B/S thoughts. * Find your flow. * Live in fullfilled happiness. * Turn fears into certainty. * Resilience under stress. Face to face - no online - no zoom - real time in small groups. Coming soon.

14.01.2022 Life is easy right? Why would you need help? Brad Gilbert - Andre Agassi Alasdair Clarkson - Hawthorn Alex Ferguson - Man U... Steve Hanson - All Blacks Craig Bellamy - Melbourne Storm No doubt many more. Behind all these great performers are incredible coaches, who succeed again and again. Isn’t it funny that in life we don’t employ coacheswell most of us don’t. Where else could it be more important.than your life? I don’t really like to call myself a coach but my passion is to work with ANYONE to help them get the most out of themselves - by playing the mind game of life. To get to their potential. #mentalhealth #mindgym #justbeyourself

13.01.2022 When a master is serving for match point..... What’s he/she thinking? * I’m not up to this.... * This is so freakin hard. * I’m so tired. * I wonder if my post got many likes. * I don’t really deserve this. * I’m so sick of this shit. If you said none of the above you’re probably right. Most likely they’ve had many of those thoughts but learnt to replace them with more productive ones. Why should we be any different to them? We can learn the same techniques. Learn to observe the thoughts that get you nowhere. It’s Monday...... Are your thoughts setting you up to ‘win points’ today and for the week? And when you have losses come back calmly for the next one? We can all have the mind of a master. Wishing you all a cracking week. #mindbodyconnection #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #selfhelp #personnaldevelopment #counselling #ruok #teeneagehealth #onewave #mensmentalhealth #middleagedmen #mindgym #justbeyourself @ Gold Coast, Queensland

12.01.2022 Who is MIND GYM for? Because I talk a bit about mental illness, does that mean you need a diagnosed mental illness to see me? Not at all. The mind-skills I teach are for anyone who has regular thoughts that pull them away from the life they want to be living. Maybe it’s daily frustration or sadness at the way you see life’s working out for you. Or at the other end of the scale you might be high up in your field but still often dealing with thoughts that pull you away from fee...ling as happy and fulfilled as you’d like to be. And that’s really what I’m so passionate about. Just giving as many people as possible more tools to deal with the challenges of life. Many of us aren’t clinically depressed or suffering an anxiety disorder. But we do often get caught up in unwanted thoughts. My goal , through MG is to help anyone from the stuck, frustrated and grieving to the person who strives for more. As a mini team and step by step. Let’s just get to what’s important to you & deal with the barriers, real and imagined, to get you there. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for a free introductory call. I’m happy to talk to you and listen to what your challenges are. I want to help.

11.01.2022 Every week at MIND GYM we go through an aspect of mental health. In week one we start building a foundation. Anything strong and lasting needs a foundation. Welcome to PURPOSE week.... Yes yes, I know the word ‘purpose’ is everywhere at the moment I know...but hang in there. I mean you either believe in purpose or you don’t. If you don’t, if you don’t think you’re here to stand for something or to bring your unique gifts to the planet (or just your family and friends) then good luck to you. But for me, having a clear purpose statement gives me inspiration. It’s a foundation for great mental health because on those harder, even overwhelming days it can be easy to just opt out right? At MIND GYM we use purpose like a compass to keep you on track when your mind is trying to pull you away or talk you out of things. True purpose never goes away, because when you nail it, it’s core to who you are. And it doesn’t have to be profound. We can’t all be Gandhi! It’s just about finding what get’s you out of bed in the morning. What gets you in a place where you feel fulfilled, where time can stand still & your bucket is filled. In purpose week we do some activities to get you right to the centre of what’s most important to you. We take the time to ask some questions around what qualities you value the most. And when you’re done you have a PURPOSE STATEMENT which is irresistible to you. This life is amazing and we all want to suck the juice out of it hard right? Knowing you’re in true purpose is a game changer. #mindgym #stressmanagement #mentalhealth #purposefulliving #anxietyrelief

05.01.2022 Every day, pretty much, we get a curve ball or two that pull us away from feeling focused, playful, happy, in rhythm etc. It’s inevitable! Here’s a quick and easy process to reduce the impact of strong feelings that make you feel rubbish, or even ruin your day. So, let’s create some distance between you and the thoughts/feelings.... Thoughts like.... I can never get a clear day!.even when I plan and go to bed early the night before..and meditate..why meditate , that was a waste of time.actually why plan.why bother..everything gets messed up Are you feeling it? Before we do this, a premise. You can’t stop feelingshave you tried? If you move to a mountain, take away all interaction, stimulus and then meditate for about 5 years you might be able to do it. Apart from that my recommendation is that you accept that you will, in life have feelings that go from ok to suffering to ecstasy. It’s what we call LIFE. When you get a feeling or thought you don’t like or want. Try this simple process designed to CREATE SPACE. You need to stop and take about 2 minutes- * You don’t have to like the feeling but try to accept that it’s there. * Say hi to it if you like. ‘Ahh you again!’. * Name it by saying I’m feeling frustrated. Or whatever the feeling is. * Then add I notice I’m feeling frustrated * PAUSE. One deep breath. * Other additions to this could be I can’t help noticing. * OR I notice my mind is feeling. * Focus, then on what you want to feel. * Repeat if necessary. This process might seem ridiculously simple but it works for me. What do you have to lose? Try it and you might find that as you close the doors to rubbish thinking you’ve opened them up to some of the good stuff we all want. #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #mindgym #justbeyourself

05.01.2022 If you want a different outcome in one or more area of your life. What will you do differently this week?

03.01.2022 How would you describe yourself? How would you parents describe you? Your boss, clients, friends and partners? If they and you wrote that down, every description would be different - some wildly different.... Isn’t that interesting? This is Week 2. Where we learn SELF AWARENESS. But I’m self aware you say. Self aware enough to catch thoughts in real time before they cascade into justifying an action? Thoughts that take you down that well worn path of opting out, putting yourself down, saying yes to something that should be a no? Isn’t it funny that voice chirping away to you all day long, it’s like there’s two of you. One chatting away and the other just listening. Learning to sit back and see our own chatter (& actions) has to be bought into the foreground rather than the constant ( & usually unconscious) self talk. To make change, you need to be able to learn to observe yourself like the sky would watch the weather. The sky observes and the weather acts. The sky is always the same - it is the observer and in this week I teach you to observe CONSCIOUSLY to help you see & change those unwanted thoughts, feelings & actions. This is the start of your .into growing your MENTAL FLEXIBILITY. To catch your mind quickly and bend into another position without breaking will bring the results you want. UNSPLASH

02.01.2022 POWER OF A SMILE I want to smile more, I want them to come easier. Do you know someone who’s always smiling and seems to be able to make those around them smile? Don’t you love those people?... And I suspect (provided it’s not the drugs and alcohol they take) that they might just live longer and better. I’m not going to get all scientific here, although there are cool studies around the physiology of smiling. I’m just going to say we all know how infectious and bloody good a genuine smile feels (& can make others feel). SOME SIMPLE FACTS- * It’s pretty hard for stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline to secrete when you’re smiling. * Babies smile in their sleep & even in the womb. WOW! * Smiles are cross cultural. Meaning EVERY culture associates smiling with the same meaning. * Whilst most of us smile between 5-20 times a day. Kids smile up to 400. - -What a shame we lose that ability. Anyway that’s my fun fact for the day. I’m wondering if you fake one can it lead to an actual one? What do you think?

01.01.2022 If you only have 15 minutes to interact with your kid after a long day out. Make it count!! #mindsetcoaching #middleagedmen #dadlife #laughteristhebestmedicine #counselling #goldcoastcounsellor

01.01.2022 One of the things I love about MIND GYM is we have a set of premises. I wanted to call them ‘The Tim Commandments’ but..even I’m not that cheesy. One of them is that pain, in life, is inevitable.... Which is obvious to us all right? Pain, in a life lived, is part of the human experience. My father is unwell, his health and zest have declined a lot over the last 5 years. We don’t know how much longer we’ll have him around. Is it healthier to deny the inevitability or acknowledge it and embrace every exchange I have with him? To tell him how great a father he’s been while I can. Of course it hurts a lot to even say these words. We don’t really want to acknowledge pain so we avoid or suppress it. Or perhaps we think we can be ‘conscious’ and meditate it away. But pain is strong and it carries messages for us. Maybe to open our eyes and see the good and bad as just part of life. It might help us embrace every moment a little more. Or maybe to learn lessons about ourselves. If you ignore it, it won’t go awayyou know it! At MIND GYM we allow pain in. We don’t have to love it but we need to acknowledge and learn to accept it, maybe even thank it a little. Love you Dad. Peace #tuesdaythoughts #mentalhealthawareness #mindgym #sayiloveyou #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy
