24.01.2022 If you ever saw the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner, you may recall the scene including this sycamore tree. It's standing next to Hadrian's Wall in England. If you ever get the chance, go and visit this wall. The wall extends right across England, from east coast to west coast, just south of the Scottish border. The Romans under emperor Hadrian started building it - get this - in AD 122 ! They also built a fort on it near here that you can wan...der through the remains of. The museum located there helps interpret the ruins and by means of videos and scale models gives you a real sense of what life would have been like for the soldiers. It would have been no holiday camp for the ordinary soldier but the commanding officer lived in luxury and even had under-floor heating in his villa. 23.01.2022 Last week we were in Scotland and the weather was bright and sunny and all the locals were so happy. But not me ... it just wasn't right! ... but as we were driving out through Glencoe the weather turned dark and foreboding ... in other words, it was brilliant! We turned back immediately, jumped out of the car and ran across the boggy peat towards the river and started shooting. I was in my happy place Scotland is best seen in bad weather . 22.01.2022 Did that tree branch just wink at me? The tawny frogmouth is a common bird in Australia but not easy to see unless you know what to look for. Most of us have unknowingly picnicked under a tree with a couple in it. Often mistaken for owls because of their nocturnal habits they roast during the daytime. Their near perfect camouflage is complemented by stretching their heads upwards to resemble a tree branch and narrowing their eyes to slits to disguise their yellow eyes. 11.01.2022 Sometimes you may spend a lot of time and money to visit a place, only to find once you get there, the conditions aren't what you had hoped for. Has this ever been your experience? We had so been looking forward to seeing Durdle Door and maybe getting a glorious sunrise/sunset shot. Although it was beautiful, the sky and lighting was flat and unexciting. 08.01.2022 Ahh Glen Coe! The mere mention of it always fills me with awe. So many wonderful roadtrips there since the early 90's . On our very first trip there, we were driving through the valley, when we saw a fighter jet coming up from below us. We barely had time to register what it was before it roared overhead. Such a rush! If you drive in from the top of the glen, you will see the Three Sisters (ridges shown here). They loom above you like giants guarding the glen. On our re...cent trip there, we climbed in-between the two most easterly ridges into what is known as the Hidden Valley. The valley was used by Clan Macdonald to hide their livestock from raiders, or hide cattle they themselves had stolen. If you have a couple of hours to spare it's well worth the climb. 06.01.2022 My wife, Abi, was born in Devon, England and although we now live in Australia, we return every couple of years to visit relatives and friends there. One of the highlights for me has always been passing through Dartmoor National Park. I love the rugged beauty of its grasslands punctuated by granite tors and wild ponies. It also reminds me of school holidays while living in New Guinea. Having no TV stations, I recall tuning into BBC radio and being enthralled by a series read...ing of Air Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles", said to have been inspired by a legend of a pack of supernatural hounds that roamed Dartmoor.
