25.01.2022 New article now online (finally). Link in bio: Frank Clegg Lock Briefcase @frankclegg Ive been a fan of Frank Clegg for a long time. Along with most of the makers Ive covered, its not solely the end product which Im interested in, but those whose philosophy of manufacturing and creation I also admire and feel a connection with. In real terms, what that means is writing about people who create something theyre passionate about, because of a genuine love of the process, r...aw materials and finished work, rather than someone who makes something or does their work just to make money (as most people do and have done since economies began). Frank Clegg and his Leatherworks, based in Massachusetts fit hand in glove with my aesthetic, practical and philosophical views on what a good product is and why it should be made in the first place. #frankclegg #frankcleggleatherworks #frankcleggbriefcase #frankclegglockbriefcase #custombriefcase #handmadebriefcase #mensstyle
24.01.2022 New article now online https://www.timelessman.com.au//crockett-and-jones-hand-g/ Crockett & Jones Hand Grade A few years ago, a friend asked me for advice about what shoes he should buy, wanting to move away from overpriced and poor quality designer brand shoes and into high quality mens shoes for work (Banking, specifically). Hes from Manchester and really liked the idea of wearing an English shoe, but he didnt see the value in spending circa 1000 on the top end of t...he market for ready to wear. My recommendation was to buy a couple of pairs of shoes from Crockett and Jones. He bought a couple of pairs, loves them and says they still look a good as new, a couple of years later and with multiple wears each week. Ive been a big fan of Crockett and Jones since I developed an interest in menswear and that was only solidified when I met the family at Pitti Uomo a couple of years ago... 23.01.2022 Contents emptied from my @frankclegg Lock briefcase. In the end it came down to a decision between the Port brief and the Lock brief, with the Port being smaller again, with no carry strap. Id have loved the Port brief (and will probably get one as well, later on) if I just needed a laptop and one or two other items, but I work with a separate keyboard and mouse (try it if you havent already), as well as carrying my @scuoladelcuoio leather folio and I needed a bit more room than the Port brief could likely offer. Ive spread out what I normal days work looks like, to give readers an idea of what the briefcase can comfortably hold (with plenty of extra room). #frankclegg #scuoladelcuoio
23.01.2022 Stumbled across this today from a few years ago. Shuffling around the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia.
23.01.2022 Preview image from an upcoming article on my Field Jacket from @privatewhitevc I try to be as measured and impartial as I can in my writing, but its been hard this time. Ive never been so taken aback by the design, quality and style of a ready to wear piece of clothing. What struck me the most? From the minute I put it on, I I had a very clear sense that it was something Id not only hand down to one of my boys someday, but something theyd be chasing me to give to them. @jamesedenpw #privatewhitevc #privatewhite #fieldjacket #handmadeinengland

21.01.2022 New article now on the blog (link in bio). Private White V.C. Field Jacket: Dammit, Im in love. Giddy, head-spinning, where have you been all my life love. As I mentioned in a recent Instagram post about the upcoming article on this jacket, I try to be as measured and impartial as possible with all of my writing, but right now Ill just come out and say that this time around Ive failed miserably. Like everyone else I read reviews on a range of subjects which matter to me a...nd Im always put off when the writer gushes over the item or items in question. It feels insincere and one wonders if its a bought testimony. Is the writer spooning out the hyperbole because they got something for free or your publication is being paid to say nice things? (almost always, yes). So consider the rest of this article as a transgression on my part, but one which comes from a sincere place. Ive fallen in love and Ill be damned if dont tell the world about the glass case of emotion which now surrounds me. Ill be back to my more measured self in the next article.... @privatewhitevc @jamesedenpw #privatewhitevc #privatewhite #handmadeinengland #fieldjacket See more

19.01.2022 From last weeks article: Such a stark comparison in last shapes. The rounded and shorter Cavendish (right), against the more square and longer Cleverley (left). What doesnt stand out as much, but makes a huge difference when worn, are the different heel cups. As I have narrow heels, the bespoke Cleverleys hug my heel and fit like a glove. It makes for such a comfortable and secure feeling when walking. On the downside, the toe box of my Cleverleys runs long, which makes them look bigger than they should and its for that reason I rarely wear them... #bespoke #bespokeshoes #gjcleverley #crockettandjones #crockettandjonescavendish

17.01.2022 New article now online - Part 1 - WW Chan bespoke 3 piece suit, made from @vitalebarberiscanonico1663 , inspired by an image from a while ago of one they made for @paulluxsartoria A fortnight ago, in Sydney, I met with Patrick Chu and Ryan Ng of WW Chan Hong Kong to be measured for a new suit. Ill write a full article on WW Chan in August, as Ill be in Hong Kong next month and will take some photos of the HK atelier to accompany the article. For now, Ill leave it by saying that of all the tailors of Hong Kong (most of them are shoddy) WW Chan is regarded as the very best and their product is typically seen as world class... #wwchan #vitalebarberiscanonico #bespokesuit #bespoke

16.01.2022 New article now online. @redrabbittrading Cuff. If I can be vulgar for a minute.... For over 6 years TimelessMan has focused on tailors, brands and manufacturers who are "no bullshit". As a rule, they prioritise the quality of their product and dont fabricate bullshit stories about their heritage, process or product to sell to an ignorant audience. Yes, everyone has to sell their product and communicating to an audience requires you position your product in the best light,... but those who do it honestly, with the background focus always being on the product itself are the people and brands I like. With all that out of the way.... I think Ive found the least bullshit of all the no bullshit brands Ive covered. For those not yet familiar, I introduce to you, Mike French and Red Rabbit Trading Co... #redrabbit #redrabbittradingco #mensstyle #mensjewelry #menswear #madeinamerica See more

13.01.2022 New article now online (link in bio). WW Chan @wwchantailor bespoke suit, first fitting. What struck me most about this fitting was how much a small adjustment to the lapels made a huge difference to suit overall. The lapel was cut with a small amount of belly where it curves outwards slightly from bottom to top. We then adjusted that belly with pins to form a much straighter line and instantly it changed the whole feel of the suit. Removing the belly and making a straight...er line created a much sharper, more assertive aesthetic and I didnt like it. Not because I dont like the look, but because I dont see myself as that person. It felt like the difference between someone who barges into a room, barks orders at everyone and then leaves, compared to someone who listens, thinks and talks calmly. The latter feels more like me and the former feels more like me a decade ago... #wwchan #bespokesuit #bespoke #bespoketailoring #menswear #mensstyle #doublebreastedsuit See more

02.01.2022 New article now on the blog: My Montblanc Le Petit Prince Meisterstuck. My guiding philosophy on purchasing just about anything follows a pattern which involves carefully considering the need (will it be useful? is there a practical need for it?), research thoroughly, acquire slowly, buy the very best I can afford and the thing that which, when I see it, hits me squarely in the chest. This leads to acquiring quality things, which last a lifetime. The downside to being wired... this way, is that something as simple as choosing a pen, my pen, can become quite a search. Such has been the search over the last several years to find my pen, the pen which, above all others resonates with me both aesthetically and practically, with which I feel a connection, that I want to use on a daily basis for the rest of my life and hand down to one of my sons (or until I lose it at the airport next month). For most people, this level of thought over something you can pick up at the supermarket for a few cents and which will do literally the same job, never enters the equation (and fairly so). But for those of us who are so driven, a pen isnt a pen, just as a bag isnt a bag or suit isnt a suit. Its a form of self expression, often driven by a strong internal aestheticism, which doesnt exist for the ego or status, but from a more deep-seated love of form, proportion, balance and, in many cases, quality... 01.01.2022 An image from the current article on @crockettandjones_official Hand Grade shoes. These are mine after around 6 months frequent wear. Crockett and Jones Hand Grade offering bridges that gap between their Main Line shoes and the likes of Edward Green, moving up to a shoe which approaches (in many ways matches) the finish and quality of other makers 1000 shoes, for close to half the price. Making a shoe is effectively a breakdown of the costs incurred in labour and materials ...and about 80% of the cost of a shoe will be taken up with the quality of the leather (better grades of skin cost more and this relates to all parts of the shoe including the outer leather, lining and sole), as well as hand finishing. How you finish a shoe (hand channeled soles, burnishing and hand polishing take a significant amount of time and therefore add significantly to the cost. Just as in any other industry, the scale that Crockett and Jones has allows their margin per sale to be significantly reduced, making their profit through volume (though theyre hardly mass producing shoes, by any means). Additionally, their buying power means they can buy the same leathers as other, smaller makers, for far less. Same materials + greater volume = lower price... more on the blog. See more
01.01.2022 From the latest blog article: My reason for not wanting to choose a major brand for a pen is that theyre typically more talk and b/s than quality i.e. style over substance, relying on a vacuous public to eat up celebrity endorsements, made up of grossly over-engineered images and seemingly inspiring, though inevitably hollow quotes from people with such little sense of their own identity that they need to be paid through the nose to say how much they love wearing or using *...insert generic luxury brand here* which theyd have never have worn otherwise. Secondly, theyre almost all (with the exception or Hermes and one or two others) share-held conglomerates who give precisely zero fucks about the product itself and exist exclusively to make a profit. Id much rather endorse individuals with a connection to and passion for the product they make. If I was going to buy a pen from a major brand, it was going to be Montblanc. Despite the inevitable cringe-worthy Hugh Jackman celebrity endorsements and cliche marketing drivel, few would argue that they make a quality product which stands and has stood the test of time. If theres a single classic pen known the world over, its Montblancs Meisterstuck. Well made, thoughtful design, balanced proportions and, when looked after properly, will last a lifetime. That said, the heft and thickness of the classic Meisterstuck has always felt a bit too much for me. I prefer a slimmer, lighter pen, but Ill get to that later...
