25.01.2022 We had a lovely morning at the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards this morning. Some fantastic books on display. We were even lucky enough to have Gus Gordon read us his book "Somewhere else". We also had the highly energetic and wildly entertaining Greg Dreise delight us with a very lovely Welcome to Country and a fun dance with his "didgeridont". The focus of the morning was on the link between speech, language and literacy skills. Reading to your children is a very important step in developing a life long love of books and sets them up for success and learning in later life. Check your local Brisbane City Council library for "First Five Forever" events aimed to develop emergent literacy skills and enjoyment of books in children from 0-5.
24.01.2022 April 2nd #autismawarenessday globally. Do you know what autism is? Do your friends? Help share the message about autism on this special day. We love this video that sums it up so well. So many of our families deal with issues that, with a little understanding and support from the community, would be easier to handle. Become autism aware today!
24.01.2022 Say hello to Albert! Time to Shine Speech Pathology now take eftpos and credit cards for all eligible sessions thanks to our new friend. A very welcomed member of the team!
23.01.2022 Sometimes we just need to get out the pens and practice our s sounds. Lucky our clients arent too picky with the quality of our drawing! #nailedit #speechpathology #articulation
22.01.2022 Some interesting research out of the UK regarding the use of "super parenting" techniques (such as the Hanen program) and their benefits for children with autism. http://www.bbc.com/news/health-37729095
22.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/JSSFete/posts/1269991373041980 For anyone in the area: Jindalee state school fete is happening on Saturday 27th August & they are offering a sensory session before the main fete starts. What a great opportunity for some of our friends who would love to attend but find loud busy environments too overwhelming.
22.01.2022 Happy Friday! I spent the day learning about updated research for spelling and reading difficulties in children. Cant wait to get back to work next week to put my new skills to practice! - Becky
20.01.2022 Can you believe there are only 27 days until Christmas? We have lots of families ask us for gift suggestions for their children. Things that can not only be fun but help build their speech and language skills! We just love this list by Playing With Words 365 - it comes with gift suggestions from birth to 5 years as well as how to use them to help your child. Happy playing!! http://www.playingwithwords365.com//25-gifts-to-expand-yo/

19.01.2022 Proloquo2Go and other apps from Assistiveware are 50% for Autism Awareness Day (April 2, 3 & 4). Thats a saving of $200!! Proloquo2go is a high-tech communication system that some children (and adults) use to communicate. If you are interested in more information, follow the link or contact us!
19.01.2022 Stay safe out there today! What perfect weather to stay indoors and do some language rich activities. Need some inspiration? Why not try:... Play doh: sit with your little one and talk about rolling, squashing, cutting. What colours are you using? What shapes can you make? Painting/drawing: What shapes can you paint? What colours are the paints? What happens if you mix two colours together? Cook or bake together: Plan the recipe and method together. Have your (older) child read the recipe for you. Talk about stirring, pouring, mixing, what happens when you add different ingredients together? How do your ingredients change when you cook them? Read a book together: You can do so much with books! Read the story, have your child read some or all of the story to you (depending on their reading level). Look at the pictures and make up the story together or chat about what you can see in the pictures. Watch a movie/to show together: talk about what is happening. Who is in the show? What are they doing? Where are they? What happened? (practice your past tense verbs) Why not take a page out of our favourite (least favourite?) pigs book and put on your gumboots and jump in muddy puddles! (When its safe of course): Talk about jumping, splashing, wet vs dry. Can you make a BIG splash? At my house were painting Easter eggs (foam ones from Target, Im not brave enough to do real eggs!) and weve got some new puzzles to try. Well probably watch some television and have some babycinos and cuddles on the couch too. & we bought new gumboots so that we can jump in the puddles later on. What rainy day activities are you planning?
17.01.2022 Those of you who know me will know that my daughter is a HUGE fan of the Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich. I received an email this morning about their annual Day out with Thomas event. We attended Day out with Thomas this year and it was such a fun morning! I thought families may be interested in the sensory friendly day that they are running on January 18th. Details below http://www.theworkshops.qm.qld.gov.au//A+Sensory+Friendly+ Lucy

13.01.2022 A little about us! Lucy (on the left), originally from Cork, Ireland has lived and worked in Brisbane for the past 8 years. She has worked as a Speech Pathologist in Ireland at a regional autism service providing services from diagnosis to 18 years as well as at an early intervention centre for children with autism in Brisbane. She has been working with children and families as a mobile speech pathologist for the past 18 months since having her daughter, Alanna. Becky is Brisbane born and bred and has worked as a Speech Pathologist for the past 6 years at an early intervention setting as well as providing mobile speech pathology services at homes and schools. We are great friends who love coffee, cake and most of all working to help your child have their Time to Shine!
13.01.2022 Im currently on maternity leave and my 2 year old is having difficulty listening and following her routine in the mornings. Weve started using very basic schedules to help her achieve all of her "jobs". Its working a treat! Weve always used visual schedules to help the children we work with as visual information is more concrete and often more easily understood than verbal information alone. It also helps our clients on the autism spectrum to understand what will come next & can help them to complete tasks more easily because they are not worried about what will happen next. These are very much a quick "at home" job but they work. Schedules can also help with behaviours because its not mummy telling the child to do something, its the schedule! -Lucy

09.01.2022 A love of books is so important to develop at an early age. It helps with language and literacy development. We should read to our children every day right from birth. Every year at my house we have an advent calendar made of books. I wrap up 25 books & we open one before bed each night leading up to Christmas & read it as our bedtime story. I dont buy all new books. This year I bought 2, last year I bought 4. I use some of my daughters books as well as Christmas books we have accumulated over the years. & you dont have to do 25 nights, thats just the number I chose! Lucy

04.01.2022 Our families often tell us that they were recommended to "wait and see" if their child will naturally catch up to their peers before seeking help from a Speech Pathologist. This can be advice from other mothers, family members or even your GP. Speech Pathology Australia have just released a great checklist with approximate guidelines for how your childs speech and language should be developing for children of different ages. The best advice we can give is that it doesnt hurt to ask if you arent sure! Seek advice from a speech pathologist if you are ever concerned, early intervention is always best. www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au/milestones
