22.01.2022 Good luck to everyone participating in Tri Pink this morning!Good luck to everyone participating in Tri Pink this morning!

22.01.2022 BEGINNER STORY - KATIE My Name is Katie Richards, I am 28 years of age and new to the sport of triathlon. I got into the sport, by the persuasiveness of my partner who willingly signed me up for a WIT (women In Triathlon) course in Oct 2017 without me knowing. Anyhow little did I know this decision would be the best moving forward as I got to meet the best bunch of ladies (my little tri family), coaches and joined a brilliant supportive club for all levels North Coast Tri Clu...b At the beginning of my triathlon journey, I was petrified of water and was unable to swim a 25 meter length in the pool without stopping, I had also never ridden a bike since the age of 8. So lets just say everything was very new and very daunting for me. Luckily the WIT course I joined catered for all abilities, sizes and ages and we were all supported and motivated by each other and the coaches, which helped gradually build my confidence in the water and on the bike. As I was unsure whether I would take to the sport, I used my partners mountain bike and old bikinis for the first few weeks of the course. Luckily through the WIT course we were donated second hand gear by club members i.e. bike shoes, top, shorts, gloves, which by the way I still use. I signed myself up for my first race around the start of November in Mandurah (sprint distance) and I was nervous beyond belief, but at this stage I had decided that I love the sport and treated myself to a brand new (second hand) road bike off Gum tree. Going into the race, I was quite overwhelmed with my nerves and was very anxious. I was lucky enough to have a lovely lady from my club volunteer to swim alongside me and help me though the swim even tho she wasn’t participating herself. I stopped many times throughout the swim and panicked but she helped me through. There was picture taken at the end of the swim where you can see how extremely happy I was that I didn’t quit. Every race since, I get more and more confident in the water and on the bike, and if I ever have doubts I think back to that over whelming feeling of joy after the race is finished. From the start of October 2017 I gradually worked my way through the distances, starting off with a few sprint, then 3 Olympic and until finally completing two 70.3 IRONMAN in May and June 2018. I have signed up for another two 70.3 IRONMAN, one in November and December with the hope of possibly doing a full IRONMAN in 2019. Don’t give up on something because you cant swim/bike or run, because where there’s a will there’s a way. My only advice for anyone thinking of signing up to start triathlon is to beware as it is truly addictive, but makes you feel great

16.01.2022 BEGINNER PROFILE | Kate King In 2009, Kate King and her family went through the devastating reality of losing their baby boy Brett at 17 days old. Kates pregnancy with Brett had been complex and high risk after finding out at 23 weeks that their little baby boy had developed what they later found out to be conditions associated with CHARGE syndrome. After 17 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, two surgeries and a team of specialists working around the clock to help this... little boy, the family held their son, nephew and grandson for the last time. At this time Kate knew she would never be the same; she had lost herself, her son and the life they once knew. After losing Brett, Kate had lost interest in the pastimes and activities that she used to love and find so much joy in. Kate didn’t know the new person she had become, nor did she want to know her. She had lost control of who she was and given up on herself. She reached a point where she had shut herself off from the world and lived in her own bubble, clutching her family safe and relying on them for emotional support and safety. At the end of 2017, something in her clicked, she realized she had to stop trying to be the person she used to be and start embracing the person she was now and in doing so she was able to move forward and carve out a newer, healthier and happier version of herself. Her decision to contact her local triathlon club (Mandurah Triathlon Club) wasn’t an easy one; she fought through anxiety and self doubt before introducing herself. She started attending training sessions and decided that 2018 would be her year to push past the comfort zone and participate in her very first triathlon, doing so on the 21st of January. Even though she was lapped on her mountain bike and came last across the line, she knew this was a defining moment in her life and that she had made a change for the better. Since that day, she no longer sees herself as a mother who failed her son; she now can see the beautiful mother of 3 who took control of her life, accepted where she had come from and now knows where shes going. Since that day, she has grown exponentially into her new self; completing a half marathon, a sprint distance triathlon, a 7km obstacle course with her niece, even learning to surf which she has always wanted to do. Her sights are set on the future after signing up for the 2019 Busselton Jetty Swim to hopefully go on and complete a full IRONMAN. We sat down with Kate and asked her to take us on the journey of understanding her story and giving us a glimpse into her life and how triathlon has impacted her life. To read the full story please click through to read more. If you are inspired by Kate's story and want to learn more about how you can take control of your life and get involved in triathlon, sign up to our newsletter. http://www.triwa.com.au/beginner-profiles

02.01.2022 BEGINNER STORY | Jarrad Hubbard I am Jarrad Hubbard, I am a 30-year-old Husband, Father of two young boys and proud to say I am a Triathlete. I live in a Small Country town approx. 250km east of Perth and I Became a Triathlete to improve my health. I saw triathletes as Fit Healthy Happy and Strong. I was a big drinker, weighed in excess of 140kg and cleared the Bain-marie out often. Spring of 2016 I had enough and took action, I wanted to ensure I would be able to set a good ...example to my young family and be around to see them grow. I initially started run walking as I couldn’t jog for more than a few hundred metres. I also started cycling regularly along with swimming with no real direction or plan in place. I soon dropped approx. 30kg completed the 2017 HBF half marathon, I then moved on to complete a triathlon. My first race was an incredibly rewarding experience. What I didn’t know before starting was how welcoming and supportive the triathlon community were regardless of your physical appearance or athletic ability. From there as anyone that catches the bug will know a snowball effect took place and training soon ramped up and weight continued to fall off. I travelled to Perth and surrounds to compete as much as I could rounding out the season competing at Busselton 70.3 duathlon in what was the worst conditions I have endured yet, even so I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face the whole race. 18 months of work went into finish that one event and I will forever remember the on course comradery and support. I have managed now to lose over 50kg and am now training under the Guidance of a coach from the MaccaX Endurance Team. Some things that have challenged me are self motivation, training 100% alone is mentally tough, such as when the lads are all down the pub I’m on the trainer. Travel, living in a rural area means early morning travel to races, 2am wakeups or organising accommodation for the night before a race. lack of pool access, my local 33m outdoor pool is only open from mid Oct until the start of April. I also share the Narrow Country roads with Road Trains year round. As the only Triathlete currently competing in my local community I have relied heavily on the online community for resources and support. I am currently training for Western Sydney 70.3 and Ironman 70.3 WA and plan to race a majority of the great local events post new year. Does Jarrad's story inspire you? Come along to our Beginners information session, 31st October 6.30pm at the Department of Sport and Recreation, 246 Vincent St, Leederville.
