23.01.2022 Two major events collide in Australia this week - NAIDOC week and Remembrance Day. Both can be observed simultaneously because you cannot tell the story of war and our fallen soldiers without telling the story of this country’s Indigenous people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander soldiers were a formidable force during the first and second world wars, fighting alongside their white counterparts and sharing the same pay and conditions. On returning home they expected to be... treated the same, but instead continued to be deprived of the most basic rights - the right to vote, buy property or even walk into a bar. Aboriginal service people did not receive the same benefits as their white counterparts on their return, and were denied both defence homes and soldier settlement blocks. Some also returned to find that their children had been forcibly removed and put into state care as part of the Stolen Generation. No matter how and in what conditions they fought, however, it was not until 1967 that indigenous Australians were recognised as citizens. On this Remembrance Day, as part of NAIDOC week, I am taking time to remember all those who have fought in defence of our nation, especial those who were so mistreated in return for their service. #naidocweek #remembranceday See more
