25.01.2022 I would like to tell a story. The story of how I came to be in Timor in 1990 and almost every year since in the field trading in authentic village textiles / ikat, carvings, curios and everything betel nut. Where to start. In 1989 I won a trip in a pub. True. I was living in Darwin, it was coming up to Christmas, my boyfriend [as with most Territorians] enjoys a beer, I bought a carton at the local and the bottle shop guys put in an entry for me. Blew me away when I was tol...d I'd won $800 towards overseas travel [1989 remember...800 went a lot further]. I was headed south for the remainder of the wet season and when I got back to Darwin in April I was camped with my sister. A bizarre sequence of events, in one afternoon, culminated in her dying at far too young an age. I was pretty flakey for a while there and the months ticked by as I pulled myself together. All too soon it was time to use my prize or lose it. I had had a bit to do with the Free East Timor underground movement in Darwin [Timor being our nearest northern neighbour] thus enquired about going to West Timor. There was a twice weekly return service between Kupang and Darwin run by Merpati [it's Merpati and I'll fly if I want to, fly if I want to]. Tune in again for the next part of this adventure... 11.01.2022 Meet Yermanis Manubau who hand rolls the string and then hand knots these sweet little bilum/kalai bags that are used by the West Timorese to carry home pineapples and bananas and other appropriate goodies from market.

01.01.2022 I am setting up at Uki Markets on the 3rd Sun each month and Murwillumbah Showgrounds market on the 4th Sunday of each month. I am under the main building so it is nice and cool with plenty of space. See you there for some treasure hunting. Till then stay well

01.01.2022 timorgirl ; eBay - I’m back. After several years of raising my child solo, managing a large property and getting a university degree it is time to return to this selling platform and share the treasures. I am Julie and have been collecting Timorese Treasures in the field since 1990 when I won a prize for overseas travel in a pub in Darwin [true]. I had no idea at the time that I had stumbled upon an Aladdin’s cave of authentic traditional tribal treasures. I purchased some... carved items and a few textiles and a new passion was born. Timor Treasures I traded those items at Mindil Beach markets and at the end of the dry season I gathered those dollars added a few more and bought a return ticket. I have been returning annually ever since [well most years] and been witness to many changes across the last 3 decades [yes book to be published.watch this space]. Clearly none of us are sure what will happen post COVID, if there is such a thing, but I do know that the villagers, carvers and weavers up in the mountains will be grateful when some outside dollars comes into their informal/circular economy. Therefore every purchase you choose to make with me will benefit the Atoni [people of West Timor] as soon as I can get back there. I distribute reading glasses and nutritious food seeds as the soil in the western half of Timor is very poor and water a very precious resource. Please contact me if you wish to contribute.
