23.01.2022 R U OK? DAY Today is R U OK? Day, a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, Are you ok?, Tintern has focused on this day in recent years to highlight the importance of care, compassion and mental health awareness within our school community. This week many of our staff have inserted an R U OK? graphic in their email signature in recognition of this day and to get the conversation started. The Tintern Compass highlights the importance that we place on compassion within our community, and also highlights responsibility for ourselves, our actions and for others in our community. We encourage you all to use the four conversation steps below to navigate a conversation with someone today.

22.01.2022 Two days until the release of Helen Reddys (YG 1958) biopic I Am Woman on Stan, available from the 28 August 2020. This original film tells Helens story; a fearlessly ambitious and passionate singer who wrote and sang the song I Am Woman, which went on to become the anthem for the womens movement in the 1970s. An inaugural Tintern Avenue of Excellence inductee, you can read more about Helen here - https://www.tintern.vic.edu.au/commun/avenue-of-excellence/
21.01.2022 We have been reaching out to those in the community who are working at the forefront of COVID-19. Alumna Chase Young (YG 2015) shares her day-to-day experiences in her role as a Registered Nurse and deployment to the DHHS during the pandemic. After graduating from Tintern Grammar in 2015, I went on to complete a Bachelor of Nursing at the Australian Catholic University and I currently work as a Registered Nurse for Epworth Healthcare. I usually work in our Day Procedures Uni...t as an admissions and recovery nurse but after COVID-19 hit Victoria in March, I was redeployed to become a contact tracer for the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). I am very fortunate to work in a field in which I get to help people, as this has always been a passion of mine. Working in Day Procedures, I get to know my patients as I admit them for surgery and I get to see how relieved they are when I recover them and send them home. When COVID-19 began, I quickly learnt how rapidly this virus would affect my job and our patients. Elective surgery was swiftly shut down and I was redeployed to the DHHS to work as a contact tracer. While this was all a whirlwind at the beginning, I have learnt how to adapt my nursing skills in a different environment and help reassure COVID-19 patients and their families over the phone. While there have been challenges and confronting situations, I am proud that I have had the opportunity to assist the Victorian community during this difficult time. I would like to send a big message of support to the Year 12 students of 2020, in particular my siblings Phoebe and Lachlan Young. I know this has been a hard year for you all, but keep your heads up because youre nearly there! Keep working hard and think about how amazing it will be when you finish your final exams. Wishing you all the best of luck for the future!
20.01.2022 Congratulations to our magnificent Alumna and Geography Teacher Naomi Baulch (YG 1991) for winning the Alex Lyne Fieldwork Award for best practice in her virtual fieldwork on Year 10 Environmental Change and Management at McCrae Beach The Alex Lyne Fieldwork Award is an internationally contested award open to all Geography teachers which focuses on creating exciting and challenging fieldwork experiences for students and holds great prestige amongst Geographers. The task was p...resented with very clear instructions for Year 10 students and was well scaffolded to develop geographical skills in relation to writing a fieldwork report. It was clearly linked to the curriculum in terms of the content and skills addressed. It contained excellent use of spatial technologies and used a range of source materials such as aerial images and photos which enabled the development of fieldwork skills such as sketching and interpretation although the task was unable to be undertaken in the field. Overall, a fine example of best practice remote Geography fieldwork. Well done Naomi.Congratulations to our magnificent alumna and Geography Teacher Naomi Baulch (YG 1991) for winning the Alex Lyne Fieldwork Award for best practice in her virtual fieldwork on Year 10 Environmental Change and Management at McCrae Beach.
20.01.2022 To all of our wonderful Fathers, Uncles, Grandfathers and Guardians wishing you a Happy Fathers Day.

20.01.2022 While learning online our Year 7 Art Students have been finding new, innovative ways to make art from materials that they have at home. Recently they have been exploring Optical Illusion Renderings, which led them to create a photographic studio at home, using their ipads and phones, and some clever lighting techniques to create Visual Distortion Glass Art. The students discussed composition, balance, lighting, form and distortion as well as exploring artists such as Susan Saroff and Steve Purnell. The students then set up their studio spaces and experimented with different lighting placement and using water to magnify and distort the patterns, well done to the students for creating these clever visual masterpieces.

18.01.2022 2021 TINTERN BIG FREEZE It was a very apt day for the Tintern Big Freeze, initiated by Leader Jamiee (Year 12) and organised and run by the School Leadership team. 2021 FightMND beanies were sold and students could buy a raffle ticket to ‘freeze’ one of our very brave members of staff with a bucket of ice and water. ... 17.01.2022 GREEN TEAM UPDATE This week our Green Team have been discussing the environmental impacts of palm oil production, to learn more about this topic you can read the article below written by Green Team member and Year 9 Student Meleah Byth. Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil that is made from the fruit of the oil palm trees that are native to Africa. 85% of palm oil is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia then transported all over the globe to be used in a massive variety of produ...cts. Palm oil is extremely popular because it is odourless and colourless. In fact, it can be found in about 50% of packaged products in the supermarket! There are two types of palm oil produced, non-sustainable palm oil and sustainable palm oil (certified by an organisation called RSPO). Products containing sustainable palm oil will have RSPO written on them (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). You may remember going to the zoo a few years ago and seeing the orangutans. I can remember learning how they were endangered species being threatened by palm oil production. Non-sustainable palm oil production involves clearing forests to make room for crops. In doing this, huge amounts of green house gasses are released. It also causes habitat loss as well as water and air pollution. Thankfully, there is a lot we can do to reduce the impact palm oil production is having on the environment. To grow palm oil, significantly less land is needed than other vegetable oils (10 times less than soy!) so sustainable palm oil is definitely the way to go. RSPO currently makes up 21% of the worlds total palm oil supply, and, by supporting products certified by them, we can hopefully raise that percentage number and help lead to a future with more sustainable palm oil! Remember to check for products that have RSPO written on them. Or download the PalmOilScanner app, which will do it for you. - Meleah Byth

12.01.2022 Following on from the success of the 2020 Digital Earth Week, the Green Team have decided to hold another Litterati Challenge, which will last over the summer holidays and until the end of the 2021 school year. Litterati is an app that encourages people to clean up their neighbourhoods when they’re out for a walk. It involves taking a photo of the rubbish you collect on your walk and uploading it to the app. The photo can either be submitted to a challenge or to your individ...ual page, but either way your contributions are added to the total tally of litter that’s been collected through the app. This challenge aims to get our school community (parents, students and teachers) involved and help clean up various suburbs around Melbourne. As of 7 November, 2020, the total world-wide tally of litter collected through the Litterati app is 8,179,529; let’s add to this! To sign up you need to download the Litterati app onto your phone and create an account when choosing your username, please make it your name. To join the challenge, go across to the ‘Challenges’ heading. Next, you need to scroll down and press on the ‘Join a Challenge’ button, enter the code for the challenge: 336981. To upload a photo to the challenge, click on the blue camera icon that appears in the bottom right hand corner of either the ‘Profile’, ‘Community’, ‘Challenges’ or ‘Activity’ pages. 1) Upload/Take a photo of the rubbish before you pick it up off street 2) Click on the photo(s) you want to upload 3) Press the blue upload button at the centre of the bottom of the screen It’s really that simple, you can also add tags such to specify what kind of rubbish you’ve picked up but this is completely optional. Please make sure you dispose of the rubbish you collect properly, thank you for your participation and hopefully we can clean up our streets. The Green Team

09.01.2022 TODAYS LEADERS Our 2020 Student Leadership Teams have collaborated to create Todays leaders where each day one of the leaders will provide a story of inspiration, a song, a quote or wellbeing activity. Today we heard from Middle School Captain, Ellena Glenk. "I hope you are all staying safe and connected during this time. ... We all know that sometimes, especially during this global pandemic, we can find ourselves procrastinating and occasionally feeling as though there is no point in trying our best. The thought that we do not know when all of this will end can be overwhelming too. But I found a short poem a little while ago which I thought Id share with you, which is very appropriate for the current time. When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road youre trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit Rest if you must but dont you quit. John Greenleaf Whittier A song that I have been finding really inspiring lately is Rise Up by Andra Day. With everything going on, like Coronavirus, the Black Lives Matter movement and many other hardships people around the world are facing, I feel like this song really resonates for many people. You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNKu1uNBVkU I hope you can all find some happiness in the coming weeks! Stay safe everyone.

04.01.2022 SCIENCE ONLINE LEARNING Our Middle School students have been completing a food science unit, which has recently been looking at acids and bases. The students were asked to make a natural indicator at home. This can be done with many different foods, an indicator will turn a solution a different colour depending on the pH level. Students were asked to choose 3 different substances in their kitchen/ laundry that they could test. Some examples include bicarb soda, vinegar, di...sh-washing liquid, or even soda water. You can view some of the results below, the colour chart shows what colour the solution will turn depending on the pH of the substance, and depending on what natural indicator the student used. Red cabbage was most popular, but in the last one curry powder was used. Our students will be doing more Science at home next week and at the start of next term, so stay tuned for more fun!

03.01.2022 Early Childhood Educators Day Today we thank and celebrate the work of our Early Learning Centre staff and their wonderful contribution to the wellbeing and healthy development of our ELC students. Our Director of Early Learning Kristin De Vos has reflected on the recent transition to online learning Moving to online learning within an Early Childhood setting has been a ride of bumps and triumphs. The staff onsite miss the children who are home and through our Zoom meeting...s, we see that the children at home are missing their teachers and friends. This said, for the staff it has been wonderful to see the growth and development in the children. To engage one on one with a child in a Zoom meeting, to have no distractions within a room setting but to concentrate just on the little person in front of you has been rewarding and deeply satisfying. We have observed the children go from being shy on Zoom, to learning how to enter, mute, unmute and leave a meeting fully self-sufficient. My greatest joy during these weeks has been to spend time with the children, developing deeper relationships with them.
03.01.2022 Our 2020 Student Leadership Teams have collaborated to create Todays leaders where each day one of the leaders will provide a story of inspiration, a song, a quote or wellbeing activity. Today we heard from School Captain Ashleigh Dowling. I hope youve all had a lovely week so far! This morning I thought Id share the story of my grandfather to hopefully interest and inspire you. ... John Dowling was born in the slums of post-depression 1930s Collingwood. His parents had immigrated to Australia from Ireland and were now alcoholics, barely able to support their family of nine children. As the youngest of the nine, John was given the least amount of care and attention, and spent his first few years on the verge of starvation. When he was just five years old, John and his six-year-old brother Danny ran away from home; the negligence of their parents had become too much for them to handle. They spent the night sleeping in a toilet block, cold and alone. Their futures looked bleak. But the next morning, their lives were changed forever when they were discovered by a policeman. He took them to Rupertswood Boys School, where they would spend the rest of their childhood, replete with the support and care they had never experienced at home. But on the way to Rupertswood, the policeman did something that went beyond the call of his duty: he bought John and Danny each an ice cream. It was the first ice cream either had ever tasted. Everyone in my family knows this story of the famous ice cream! It was a moment that touched John and Danny both so deeply, bringing them a moment of pure delight in the midst of distressing circumstances. So today Id like to encourage you to look for ice cream opportunities in your life; the opportunities that you have to do something special for your friends, family or even strangers, that will bring some sweetness to their lives. Maybe its as simple as a how are you going? text message or a spontaneous affirmation - but dont underestimate the capacity of something small to remain with someone as a fond memory for the rest of their lives. Now speaking of sweet things, Id like to introduce you to My Friend the Chocolate Cake - a fun little Australian band that I really like. I would recommend that you listen to their song Ive Got A Plan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lty0aZ9IsWc. To me, the message of this song is to keep persisting even if your plans get struck down (which might be happening fairly frequently at the moment with the continued lockdowns!). So dont hold your head down when things dont turn out the way you expect - keep making plans and staying positive for the future :) Well, thats all from me - have a great day!
02.01.2022 A big thank you to everyone that supported 'Wear a Beanie Day' today. Through your generous donations, we were able to raise valuable funds to support the Victorian SES.
