21.01.2022 Inglewood Farms receives $250k grant to seek to drought-proof organic chicken production // We are delighted to announce that Inglewood Farms has received $25...0,000 in government funding to drought-proof our operations. Last week Inglewood Farms received a visit from the State Agricultural and Fisheries Minister, Mark Furner, and Director General Dr Beth Woods. Inglewood Organic collected one of the Rural Economic Development grants from our distinguished guests to put towards a $1 million irrigation and exclusion-fencing project. Katrina Hobbs, Inglewood’s Managing Directory said, "The money that we've been awarded in this grant is going towards exclusion fencing and developing irrigation on the back part of our property, so we can get our own source of organic grain to feed the chickens." . . . #organicchicken #certifiedorganic #australianorganic #familyfarm #australianownedandmade #farmlife #australiandrought #organicstockfeed #freerangechicken Mark Furner MP for Ferny Grove

20.01.2022 Meet Anish Shah from Maharashtra, India I was in the media industry for 16 years and had a very busy lifestyle. Year 2013 was when I decided to listen to m...y heart and start learning about growing my food. I first started growing in pots on my terrace in Bangalore. My interest grew and quest to learn large scale farming took me to my guru, late Dr. Narayan Reddy who was a veteran in organic farming and practiced organic farming for more than 45 years. I was fortunate to learn details about organic farming- soil, seeds, water, micro organisms from him. Following my passion I started visiting other farms and worked and learned on the job. I decided to learn further and got myself trained as a Permaculture practitioner and learned the natural way of growing a food forest. Learning did not stop there and I also got trained in Bio Dynamic farming. I worked closely with farmers and decided to start my farm and built a CSA- Community Supported agriculture program- creating fixed food box that can be shipped from farmer groups straight to consumers in cities. I farm on 28 acres land at Sindhudurg, Konkan region in Maharashtra and grow turmeric, sesame, groundnut, black beans, corn, watermelons, pineapple, mangoes, cashews and spices like pepper and cinnamon. I am also growing 300 plus teak and silver oak trees. I also have another farm at Pali, khopoli which is close to Mumbai and Pune cities - the focus there is purely on growing vegetables which can be shipped to nearby cities. I am also working on building my indigenous seed bank and I collect and share seeds with various communities. I grow a lot of green manure to fix nitrogen in soil and try to keep my soil covered either with green cover or with dry hay. I extensively work with natural products and use of cow dung in both dry and wet form to make fertilizers which help enrich the soil by increasing healthy micro organisms. I use biochar to host and give permanent housing colony to these organisms. I also make my own IMO- Indigenous micro organisms using cooked rice, sour curds, overripe fruits, jaggary etc to make the soil healthy. I use Neem powder, tobacco leaves, ginger, chilies, garlic along with desi cow urine to make my own pesticides. I believe that good food is real medicine and it will fight all the diseases that the modern world is facing. I am also a consultant and help people build farms, I love interacting with kids and teach them about regional, local and seasonal food. Our furure generation needs to get inspired to learn and grow healthy food. 17.01.2022 Here's a clever Aussie Christmas decoration! A local market in Mount Dandenong, Victoria, came up with this DIY decoration using native flowers. Here's their... how-to guide: 1. Remove labels from glass jars. Pasta sauce jars seem to work well as they have a curved base and fit the bottlebrush nicely. 2. Collect flowers and cut to length. Please be mindful these flowers provide food for wildlife and just collect a few. Place flower in the jar with top pointing down. 3. Fill the jar on a flat surface with cold tap water as close to top as possible (keep a towel handy). Screw on the lid as tightly as possible. Dry the jar and turn upside down. Water needs to be changed when cloudy. The flowers last really well submerged, around 3-4 weeks. The jar can be decorated with ribbon if you prefer. & how-to: Olinda Collective

09.01.2022 IT'S A FINE LINE BETWEEN PLEASURE AND PAIN IN THE PASSIONFRUIT ORCHARD After a bumper crop in his new passionfruit orchard at Shannonvale, near Mossma...n, the Woods family was sure their decision to diversify their papaya farm had paid off. But the following season when vines started to whither and production dropped by two-thirds, they knew they had a problem. NEMATODES! Any farmer, or keen gardner for that matter, can tell you the microscopic worm-like creatures, which live in soil, can be their existence. And while there can be beneficial ones, some nematodes can have devastating effects on plants as they feed on and lay their eggs in the roots. Nathan Woods says by the time these telltale signs became evident in his orchard, it was too late. With bills mounting, the Woods' had no room to move and no time to spell the land to resolve their problem. So, Nathan and his parents, Jim and Ethel, decided the only way to grow passionfruits was UP! Quite literally, they planted new vines in pots supported by a substrate, hydroponic watering system. Nathan Woods says if the gamble pays off, the farm will have overcomed its nematodes and other disease pressure, saved water, increased productivity and extended their growing season. "Because the plant is getting fed basically six times a day, it's getting the nutrients going straight to it. Everything we've planted so far within a couple of days, you can see the trendils grabbing on and jumping out of the pot." "We don't want to have another year like we had last year so we reckon this is the way to go." Looking and tasting the juicy flesh from his dark purple-skinned passionfruits, it's hard to believe the trouble that laid beneath the surface. "The first year we had this paddock everything went berserk, we had 2000 vines in and I think we did around five-and-a-half thousand boxes; then last year we had 2700 vines in and we would have done 1500-1700 boxes so more vines, less fruit. "You know once you've got a dying vine, it's a case of 'what do you do now'? You jsut gotta keep walking past it and keep going."

09.01.2022 Grocery stores typically put sweet potatoes on sale during their growing season. This means, if you're like me, you stockpile more than you can possibly eat fre...sh. Preserve those tasty, beta-carotene rich root vegetables for the long winter (or year) ahead by canning them. Best of all, because they're already cooked, it means you can go from popping open a jar to a healthy side dish or pie in no time. Get the recipe for canning sweet potatoes here https://practicalselfreliance.com/canning-sweet-potatoes/

04.01.2022 Meet Megan from Adams County, Pennsylvania, United States "I love being outdoors and being connected with nature and the food system. It is so satisfying to... be able to grow your own fresh food and to see all your hard work pay off. From a young age I was fascinated by the natural world and enjoyed my family's small garden. Three years ago I left my office job in hopes of finding a farming job and luckily I did. Now I do my favourite work all day long! I also attend and set up farmer's market in our area and sometimes volunteer for other local farms. I grow a wide variety of vegetables and some fruits from March through December. I especially like to grow colorful vegetable varieties that are not found in stores. Growing from seeds is fun and it gives me something to do from late winter to spring. In cold and snowy winter months I take time to rest and think of ideas for the next growing season. Due to poor drainage and heavy soils, raised beds are my preferred gardening method in my home garden. A few years ago we expanded and invested in the garden and now have 22 raised beds, plus a few areas for growing berries and lots of container plants! I use pesticides free methods including companion planting and I also use row covers for brassicas to keep cabbage worms from laying eggs on the plants. Adding ladybugs to the garden for aphid control and using beer traps for slugs helps as well. I also try to attract other beneficial insects to the garden. I add some composted manure to my garden beds every spring and use some natural fertilizers and fish emulsion as needed throughout the season. Never give up whether that applies to your dreams and aspirations or even just a plant you struggle with growing. There is always a solution and there will be steps you can take towards your goals.
