24.01.2022 Developmental Playgroup - Helping NICU graduates thrive Term 4 commences at Ability Centre, Coolbinia next week. Limited places are still available. Please see our website to enrol, or for further information.
24.01.2022 The common misconception was that now that the twins were home, everything was "normal". The twins graduated from the NICU, not from prematurity. All of those acronyms they earned in the NICU still followed their names - CLD, BPD, ROP, PDA, PH, FTT, etc. So true! A great read
23.01.2022 This year Telethon Kids Institute celebrate their 30th year of research into childhood illness and disease. Their celebratory exhibition was a magnificent way to showcase community participation and honour the collaborative efforts of researchers and consumers.
23.01.2022 Are you an inpatient at PCH or do you have an outpatient appointment on World Prematurity Day? Stop by Kalparrin and enjoy a cuppa and some downtime.
23.01.2022 Could a reduction in rates of early birth due to the COVID lockdowns be an unexpected but welcome side-effect of the pandemic? Understanding the root causes of preterm birth is critical to prevent more babies being born too soon. We know everyday makes a difference! We are so pleased to see WIRF and the Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance studying the consequences within Australia and more broadly as part of a global context. We can’t wait to hear what they find out!
23.01.2022 Urgent Medicine recall If you have on hand or use Infants Friend, or know someone who does, please ensure they are aware of this recall.
22.01.2022 The City of Subiaco Council are meeting tonight to discuss making available an additional 20 Early Bird parking passes for NICU families at King Eddies. This would double the number of available passes from 20 to 40. If you’ve been impacted by parking restrictions in the streets surrounding KEMH we would encourage you to write to Council today and share: - what impact did the need to move your car have on your family. - What difference would a parking pass make, or have made..., to your family during your NICU admission. It’s important to note that this will not increase the number of cars parking in the vicinity of KEMH, nor will it increase the number of bays available. This motion will simply ensure you will not be fined if you over stay in designated areas, thus reducing the need to leave NICU in order to move your car to comply with 3 hour parking limits. Please have your say by emailing Council: [email protected] Or Join us at the Council Meeting this evening to make a statement (rate payers) or ask a question (visitors to the city). Together we can make a difference
21.01.2022 What an incredible effort by a fabulous group of people. We are so honoured to be their charity of choice These funds will go a long way to supporting families who unexpectedly find themselves thrust into life in the Neonatal Unit. Thank you St John of God Subiaco
21.01.2022 Recently the State Government launched the Containers for Change initiative to encourage recycling of single-use plastic and glass containers. We have registered to participate in this initiative which means that when you return your eligible containers you can choose to donate some or all of the proceeds to Tiny Sparks! Simply quote our Scheme ID: C10333945. As a 100% volunteer-run organisation every dollar makes a difference to the lives of others. We truly appreciate your support!
19.01.2022 This is wonderful news for our community! A world class facility and opportunity to bring best practice design to support Child & Family Centred Care in the neonatal unit
18.01.2022 Following a Neonatal Unit stay many parents will feel anxious. When anxiety lingers it might be time to have a chat with a health care professional. Anxiety can look and feel different and may present in some of the following ways-

13.01.2022 The Interact Club at Willetton Senior High School voted to supportTiny Sparks WAwith the funds made from a fundraiser, Spring Cool Down, where they sold drinks, ice creams, and icy poles to students. Interact is a youth branch of Rotary International and comprises of students between the ages of 12-18 who participate in regular fundraising and community service activities for both local and international charities. Last year, they were able to donate over $10,000 to variou...s incredible organisations. Club Secretary Angela says, ‘We recognise your organisation's invaluable efforts in improving the wellbeing of mothers enduring high-risk pregnancies and children born sick or premature who require neonatal unit care. You have all helped positively impact many lives, and we admire and respect your hard work.’ Funds donated by the Interact Club will support our Care Package program. The students were asked to provide a message of support to the recipients. Their cards will read, ‘This care package has been sponsored by the Interact Club of Willetton Senior High School. We hope this supports you and your family during these difficult circumstances.’ Thank you Interact Willetton We are so grateful for your generous contribution! 12.01.2022 Triggers Maybe it’s a song, a smell or something else that sends you right back to the NICU and brings all of those emotions flooding to the surface? For me it’s the Wattles beginning to flower. They are seemingly everywhere. At first I didn’t even realise it was ‘a thing’. It was an uneasy feeling I couldn’t put my finger on, not a flash back if you like. Let me explain...... My NICU baby was born at the end of September and in the weeks leading up to his birth we travelled the Forrest Highway more times than you can count. We had regular family commitments in Perth, two birthday’s, Father’s Day and then a dear friend of our family passed away, so there were more trips up and down. The sides of the Highway are thick with Wattles and the yellow blossoms were out in full force for all of those trips to Perth and home again. For several years I had this uneasy feeling through September. I wasn’t really sure why initially and then I came to realise it was all those thoughts and feelings bubbling away under the surface. Those first blossoms emerging and then the yellow everywhere were absolutely a stark reminder of all that we’d endured. Now I actually look forward to seeing those first blooms. I know it’s coming. I’m prepared. I’m grateful for just how far we have come in the last 10 years and the difference we have made and continue to make in the community. Those yellow blossoms are now a celebration! - Amber
11.01.2022 Your story is just that, yours! It may make people uncomfortable and that’s ok
10.01.2022 Against all odds Richard celebrates his 1st Birthday
09.01.2022 Our friends at Kalparrin need your help! If you have 10 minutes to spare please complete their survey. Also, did you know that joining Kalparrin is FREE? If you aren't already a member check them out. They have so much to offer families raising children with disability, developmental delay, genetic, chronic medical and/or health conditions.
08.01.2022 Each year about 4,000 West Australian babies are admitted to a Neonatal Unit. About 75% of them are born prematurely with the other 25% full term but sick or surgical. Why was your baby admitted to a Neonatal Unit?
08.01.2022 Thank a First Responder Day! To all First Responders (career and volunteer) we appreciate all that you do for the community Thank you for being you!
08.01.2022 Sending our deepest sympathies to the Strother Family, their friends and community, on the passing of Gary. Gary was instrumental in the establishment of the Holt Rock Hoedown and welcome us with open arms when we were event beneficiaries. There is nothing quite like WA farming hospitality. Rest peacefully Gary With love from the Board and members of Tiny Sparks WA
06.01.2022 Christmas 2020 For many years we have run our annual Christmas Quilt Drive and in spite of COVIDs attempts to derail everything in 2020, humanity prevailed! Many sewing groups ran with this project including the remarkable Get Scrubbed WA and our own Crafty Creators. Since the delivery cut off we have been busy sorting, packing, posting and delivering to 26 hospitals around the state. Our final delivery was made this morning to Bunbury Regional Hospital. Along with the Chr...istmas quilts, stockings and cards, hospitals also received ‘Baby’s 1st Christmas 2020’ ornaments thanks to the ongoing generous support of local family run business, Foote and Flame. This year we distributed a staggering 544 gifts for Christmas in maternity, Neonatal and Special Care Nursery beds all over WA! Huge thanks to volunteers Christine H, Elke, Zach and Xavier for generously giving their time to assist with collation and deliveries. To our drop off points Margaret, Jenny, Liesl, Briana, Sandra and Christine L thank you for opening your homes for drop offs. Melinda thank you for hosting the stocking sew along and answering lots of questions. To everyone who coordinated family, friends or an organised sewing group we thank you! Thanks to you, Christmas in hospital this year will be a special time for so many. Thank you all for helping to make this possible
06.01.2022 You’re invited to the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day Service at KEMH
06.01.2022 International Volunteer Day Volunteering is at the very core of being a human. No one has made it through life without someone else’s help. - Heather French Henry As a 100% volunteer run organisation we truly value every single person who contributes their time to further our mission, to improve the health and wellbeing of Western Australian families enduring high-risk pregnancy, infants requiring neonatal unit care and the associated childhood impacts; including the c...ommunities supporting them. Thank you all
05.01.2022 All children should have the opportunity to thrive at school. For some, especially those born one school year but due another, they may benefit from an additional year of kindy or preprimary or delayed entry. Please sign this petition to give concerned WA families more flexibility around starting school.
05.01.2022 During Neonatal November we are encouraging people to share their stories and help us raise awareness. Sabrina shares, 'Skylar was born at 28 weeks and 5 days at King Edward Memorial Hospital. It was the scariest and most traumatic thing I have ever gone through, not knowing what was next. She was born early because I had severe pre-eclampsia. While she was in NICU I was in my own in ICU for 3 days before spending another week in the general maternity ward. I wasn’t able to h...old Skylar until the day after she was born after being wheeled down in my bed. Even though it was 5 minutes it was the best cuddle ever. I would love to thank tiny sparks for the care package and all the small things that people think might not contribute too much, but is a massive help for the parents and their sanity. Just the reminders we aren’t doing it alone. 8 months later and Miss Skylar is just the loveliest, strongest, super independent little bundle we love with bursting hearts of love.' See more

03.01.2022 Wonderful support services for our regional families.
02.01.2022 A year where Nurses and Midwives have gone above and beyond every step of the way! Great to celebrate them today
02.01.2022 Interventions used to save the life of an early or sick baby can cause life long lung problems. We need more research into the consequences and what can be done to prevent or reverse damage. Researchers have the passion and ideas, they need the funds to make it happen! Lung issues represent 9% of Australia’s total disease burden but have received just 2% of research investment between 2008 & 2017. These numbers must change. #WorldLungDay
02.01.2022 Change is a slow process, but some progress is better than none. The Sustainable Health Review has recommended some big changes in health care. We are pleased to be advocating for our families to see positive changes for the benefit of all.
