22.01.2022 PIZZA PARTY One of our clients introduced us to our current favourite game (I secretly celebrate when the kids choose it!) It works on fine motor skills (rolling and manipulating the dice, including rolling multiple die at once) and visual perceptual skills (scanning the die and each pizza slice to match ingredients) We purchased ours from @the.last.piece.geelong who have an AMAZING range of games and are incredibly helpful #pediatricOT #prek #prekteacher #preKi...ndergarten #prekinder #preklife #firstgrade #firstgradeteacher #firstgradeteachers #Finemotor #kindergarten #kindergartenteacher #kindergartener #kindergartenready #kindergartenactivities #pediatricOT #pediot #paediatricot #earlyed #earlyeducator #earlyyears #education #educational #educationaltoys #educationtoys #earlyintervention #teacherspayteachers #speechandlanguagetherapy #visualperception #finemotorskills See more

21.01.2022 If youre based in Geelong or Colac, heres an opportunity to give some feedback to help shape services in your community.

21.01.2022 SELF REGULATION - kids often require an external source to help them learn to self regulate their breathing and heart rate. When heightened/stressed children breath from the chest vs. the bellly. Over time this short sharp breathing becomes habitual. This actiity requires kids to move a cotton wool ball in an obstacle course (they’ve created) via a straw - using the least number of breaths long exhalations = long inhalations, breathing right down into the belly! It also ...organises their sensory system by bringing their hands, eyes and mouth to the midline #Repost @etkinlikariyorum with @get_repost #pediatricOT #prek #prekteacher #preKindergarten #prekinder #preklife #firstgrade #firstgradeteacher #firstgradeteachers #FirstGradeTribe #kindergarten #kindergartenteacher #kindergartener #kindergartenready #kindergartenactivities #pediatricOT #pediot #paediatricot #earlyed #earlyeducator #earlyyears #education #educational #educationaltoys #educationtoys #earlyintervention #teacherspayteachers #speechandlanguagetherapy #teachersofinstagram See more

21.01.2022 SELF REGULATION Sometimes during therapy, kids can feel like they are the only one who is learning a specific skill. I have found this to be especially true when talking and learning about emotions (lets be real, talking about how your body feels when you’re angry etc isn’t top of the list of activities kids would pick in a session!) There are so many emotions that are experienced by people in a myriad of unique ways - just like the range of colours in a rainbow C...haracters in TV shows and movies can assist kids to generalise the skills they are learning and realise that it’s not just them that has emotions and different body sensations - everyone does! 19.01.2022 Screen Time. One of the biggest debates of our time. "I only use it as a last resort, I hear you saying. Which is fine, if its true. However, the more we do ...something, the more familiar and comfortable we are to quiet a disruptive child, the more it becomes a habit rather than the exception. Of course there are times when you need to rely on any tool you have in your disposal, to keep yourself sane and get through a difficult moment. But the tools you have are not just electronic. 15.01.2022 Telehealth can be tricky at times especially as we have been doing OT via Telehealth on and off since March! With many of our clients starting school next year we have begun to work on school readiness skills. For many of our clients this means expanding on their drawing skills as they can sometimes get stuck drawing the same things all the time as that is what is comfortable for them and they know how to do it. Todays theme when working with a client who predominantly draws people and houses, was space as chosen by the client! #pediatricot #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #paediatricot #finemotorskills #schoolreadiness #schoolbasedot

15.01.2022 Attn: Medical Doctors who are parents of children with disability in Australia At the request of a dear friend, I have started a group for parents of disabled k...ids or adults who are also medical doctors to share resources, information and support. 14.01.2022 SELF REGULATION Talking about emotions isn’t always fun. Incorporating kids favourite TV, movie and book characters assists kids to recognise that everyone has feelings - even their favourite characters! 14.01.2022 ADHD & SHAME It is estimated by some experts that kids with ADHD receive 12,000 more negative messages by the age of 12 than their neurotypical peers. As you ca...n imagine, years of failure and constant negative criticism can have a significant negative impact on a childs self-esteem and lead to the development of toxic shame. Feelings of shame reflect a childs internal state of inadequacy, unworthiness, dishonour, or regret, and may be experienced as a feeling of being fundamentally different, flawed, and/or inadequate. Shame can make kids with ADHD want to ignore, withdraw and hide, or lash out and punish/hurt others. Shame can also increase the risk of them developing oppositional and defiant behaviour, anxiety and depression and eating disorders, as well as increase the risk of drug use, self-harm and suicide. Protecting a childs self-esteem and self-worth is therefore an EXTREMELY important part of ensuring their wellbeing. By understanding your childs ADHD challenges and learning to parent them in a positive and proactive way, you can protect your childs self-esteem, as well as your own sanity, and create a happier and healthier home life for you all. https://thrivingwithadhd.com.au/a-framework-for-parents/

10.01.2022 Friendly reminder why you won’t see any testimonials on our website or social media pages. It is against the law for allied health professionals to use testimonials. #Repost @meganbray_dietitian with @reposter.app . I'm often asked why I don't share client success stories, and this is why - registered health professionals are not allowed to (which I totally support). ... The statement below is taken from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency website which outlines more thoroughly why testimonials are prohibited. - they are often personal opinions and have no scientific or objective basis as a recommendation of a health practitioner’s services - the outcomes experienced by one patient do not necessarily reflect outcomes available to all consumers or the likely outcomes - they are not usually a balanced source of information, as they typically include a narrow selection of positive comments about patient experiences and therefore don’t tell the whole story about a practitioner’s services (i.e. they can be misleading), and - patients may place too much weight on testimonials because they do not have the expert knowledge to accurately assess the validity of the claims Ps. I'm 99.9% certain I stole the idea for this post from @jonosteedman but cannot for the life of me find his work to credit Follow him, look at his work etc etc.

10.01.2022 DRAWING Drawing is an important precursor to handwriting. Drawing helps to develop fine motor skills, hand eye coordination and visual spatial skills to name a few. Simple shapes are linked to letter formation in that if a child in unable to draw a triangle it is likely they will have difficulty forming letters with diagonal lines such as M N V Y Z K #pediatricOT #prek #prekteacher #preKindergarten #prekinder #preklife #firstgrade #firstgradeteacher #firstgradeteachers #FirstGradeTribe #kindergarten #kindergartenteacher #kindergartener #kindergartenready #kindergartenactivities #pediatricOT #pediot #paediatricot #earlyed #earlyeducator #earlyyears #education #educational #educationaltoys #educationtoys #earlyintervention #teacherspayteachers #speechandlanguagetherapy #teachersofinstagram
