24.01.2022 Are you interested in helping out your child with their grasp? While these are developmental patterns, there are ways to promote functional grasp when kids are... ready and working on the skill. Break those crayons! So many people think big, chunky crayons are best. As your toddler progresses, these can actually encourage a fisted grip. Broken or small crayons encourage use of the fingers. Same goes for sidewalk chalk. Draw or paint on an easel. This promotes wrist extension and helps your child use their hand as a unit when drawing. Lay on your belly to color and draw or play games with your child. While prone, prop yourself on your forearms. This position inhibits whole are motions to produce marks on paper Play games with small pieces (supervise with young kids) to work on pincer grasp of small items; encourage using the finger pads and not whole hand. 07.01.2022 A new eye scan that detects autism is expected to revolutionise how the condition is diagnosed. Researchers from Flinders University say the hand-held scanning... device can detect subtle electrical signals in the retina that are a key sign of autism. These "bio-markers" will allow children to be diagnosed earlier allowing important interventions and increased family support. The study will now be expanded to include toddlers and infants. www.7NEWS.com.au #Autism #7NEWS

07.01.2022 This communication board can help parents and carers to talk to children about being sick. How to use this board: Having the pictures to point at as the adult ...talks, gives the child more information and helps them to understand the message. The adult may ask the child if they are feeling sick and point to the pictures of the different body parts to help the child identify where or how they feel unwell. The child may find it easier to explain how they are feeling by pointing to the pictures rather than talking. The pictures can also be used as a teaching tool to reinforce children to cover their mouth with their arm as they cough to limit the spread of germs. This could be done before a child is coughing or after they have coughed and forgotten to cover their mouth with their arm. The adult can point to the cough picture and say When you cough, then point to the elbow picture cover your mouth with your arm and show the child what this means by demonstrating. Then as the adult says Then wash your hands (wash hands) with soap (soap) to get rid of germs (germs) they can point to the matching pictures. Thank you, Michaela Murray, Speech Pathologist at Plumtree for creating this sharable resource.
