24.01.2022 Night terrors are very dramatic awakenings that happen during the first few hours of sleep at night. About 5% of children have them, usually occurring in preschool and primary school-aged children. While there is very little you can do during a night terror episode, there are some general strategies for helping children who get night terrors. During the night terror episode, stay calm and don't touch your child unless they are going to hurt themselves. ... Keep your house safe at night time. Lock windows and doors, and clear the floor of objects. Have a regular sleep time with a good bedtime routine to avoid your child becoming too tired. Don't make a big fuss about the night terror the next day. Children can often become upset by your reaction and may become anxious about going to bed. 24.01.2022 How do I do ‘time-out’ in a way that is helpful? Often when young children misbehave, what they need is help from their parent or caregiver to calm down. Time-out should be used as a technique to offer your child some ‘down time’ and should not be used as a punishment to make the child suffer. Time-out works best when used for short periods and immediately after an inappropriate behaviour occurs. Sending children away or isolating them for long periods can cause greater distress, and may be unhelpful. www.tinyterrors.com.au

21.01.2022 Having good mental health is key to the healthy development and wellbeing of every child. Kids need good mental health - not only to be able to deal with challenges and adapt to change, but so they can feel good about themselves, build healthy relationships with others and enjoy life. If your child, or a child you know, is having mental health issues, the best thing you can do is get them some help, before it gets worse like: Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 (telephone and online c...ounselling for ages 5-25) Lifeline 13 11 14 You can also ask your family doctor for advice or consult a psychologist if you would like more information or mental health resources for kids. https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/kids-mental-health

14.01.2022 In this easy-to-read, science-based book, parents, caregivers, and adults of all kinds discover how discipline affects children’s development, why intervention should reinforce connection not separation, and why the disciplinary strategies that may have been used on us as children are not the ones that children really need. As a practicing child and family psychologist and advisor to the British Columbia ministry of children and families, Dr Vanessa Lapointe, R Psych has see...n it all, and she has navigated hundreds of tough situations with families. Drawing on scientific research and a wealth of clinical experience, she shows you how to put out the fire without dampening your child’s spirits; how to correct their behavior while emphasizing connection; and how to discipline without damage. https://www.thenile.com.au//discipline-witho/9781928055105

06.01.2022 We loved reading about Dr Vanessa Lapointe, R Psych's mantra to use as a foundation to act and react moment to moment: See it, Feel it, Be it. See it simply involves observing the moment from a very present kind of place without assigning judgement or value. It might be that you see your child crying, hitting someone, or not doing what was asked of them. From there, move to Feel it. This is where you put yourself inside the heart and mind of your child and really unders...tand empathically what is happening for them. Once you have landed there, you can then see the world through your child’s eyes and Be it for them. https://drvanessalapointe.com/why-parents-need-to-be-in-ch/

01.01.2022 Small successes build confidence. The key is to set mini goals to begin with, as stepping stones to bigger achievements. So if the goal is to learn how to manage your child's emotions, then work out some steps from easiest to hardest to encourage them to try. For example, step 1: practice calm breathing for 5 minutes every day, step 2: count to 10 when you start to feel annoyed. Tiny Terrors is based in Sydney NSW and is an award winning in-home parenting and behaviour support agency. Our aim is to equip you with the tools and strategies you need in order to manage and encourage more positive behaviour and help improve everyday activities with your child.
