25.01.2022 It is with a great deal of sadness we advise you all that one of our most senior artists has passed away. Kunmanara Lewis was an artist with a very broad creative artistic practice. Mrs Lewis’ fibre arts practice has developed since the early beginnings of Tjanpi Desert Weavers in 1995. Kunmanara’s artwork was informed by her expertise in punu (wood carving) and she drew inspiration from the many animals in country, in addition to cameos from community life and early missi...on days in Pukatja. You have left an enduring legacy Mrs Lewis. We will miss your artistic craft, your insights and wisdom and your profound depth of knowledge. Pictured above is Mrs Lewis' 'Australian Coat of Arms; we were there and we are here'. (Image by Emma Poletti. Tjanpi Desert Weavers, NPY Women’s Council) which is a response to the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, historically an emblem signifying the national unity of Australia and serves as a sign of identity and authority. This work was selected for the 2018 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award and was acquired by the Parliament House Collection.

05.01.2022 Did you know that its NAIDOC week? This year's theme is 'Always Was, Always Will Be' in recognition that this continent has been covered by hundreds of nations since time immemorial. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. We have launched a special Christmas Collection to coincide with NAIDOC week, celebrating the artistic and cultural strength of Anangu* women from the Ngaanyat...jarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara lands of the Central and Western Deserts. As a social enterprise, Tjanpi exists to ensure that artists can continue to live in communities on Country, country that always was and always will be Anangu land. If you're looking for ways to support Aboriginal communities, buying from blak businesses is a great way! When you buy from Aboriginal owned art centres your money goes directly to artists and community. Head to https://tjanpi.com.au/collections/christmas-collection #alwayswasalwayswillbe #NAIDOC #NAIDOC2020 #supportblakbusiness #shopethical *Anangu/Yarnangu is the Pitjantjatjara/Ngaanyatjarra word for person. It is used to refer to any Aboriginal person from these nations. See more
