24.01.2022 The government has this afternoon announced a new JobKeeper payment, wherein businesses impacted by the Coronavirus will be able to access a wage subsidy to enable them to continue paying their employees. Employers and sole traders who have seen a minimum 30% decrease in turnover will be able to claim a fortnightly payment of $1500 per eligible employee for a period of 6 months. This $1500 is a flat rate for every employee regardless of their usual earnings, and is based on ...70% of the current median wage in Australia. Eligible employees include full time, part time and casual workers who were employed by the business on 1 March 2020, including employees who have been stood down. Employers will need to apply directly to the ATO for the payments. Payments will be made from 1 May 2020 and will be backdated to 30 March 2020. Further information for employers is contained in the link below. Please don't hesitate to contact the TJL office on (02) 6554 9511 or your Manager if you would like any further advice. https://treasury.gov.au//Fact_sheet_Info_for_Employers_0.p

21.01.2022 Many Australians impacted by the outbreak of Coronavirus - either due to illness, job loss or a reduction in income - can now temporarily defer their home loan repayments. This means that no payments will be required to be made during the ‘freeze’ period, freeing up cash flow and reducing financial strain. However, interest will continue to accrue and any missed monthly payments will need to be repaid either by being added to the term of the loan, effectively extending the ...loan by up to 6 months, or by increasing your repayments for the remaining loan term. The article below outlines what each lender is currently offering. If you have been affected, we recommend you contact your lender as soon as possible for further information. https://www.ratecity.com.au//banks-freezing-mortgages-covi

10.01.2022 Details of the government’s new $25,000 HomeBuilder program were released on Wednesday. This grant is designed to help the residential construction market bounce back from the Coronavirus crisis and will provide eligible owner-occupiers (including first home buyers) a grant of $25,000 to build a new home or substantially renovate an existing home. The grants will be applicable for new homes with a property value of up to $750,000 and substantial renovations (with a contract v...alue between $150,000 and $750,000) where the property value is up to $1.5 million. The renovations can't include additions such as swimming pools, tennis courts, outdoor spas or saunas, sheds or garages. To be eligible, applicants must be Australian citizens aged over 18 and must have an income (based on 2018-2019 tax return or later) under $125,000 per annum for an individual, or $200,000 for a couple. Contracts will need to be signed between 4 June 2020 and 31 December 2020, and construction must commence within 3 months of the contract being signed. Owner-builders and those looking to renovate an existing home as an investment property are ineligible. The building contract must also be between two parties who are independent of each other, i.e. not related. It is important to note that HomeBuilder is in addition to first home owner grants, stamp duty concessions and other grants offered by the State governments, as well as the Commonwealth’s First Home Loan Deposit Scheme and First Home Super Saver Scheme. More information including examples can be found at the government’s Treasury website below. https://treasury.gov.au//2020-06/Fact_sheet_HomeBuilder.pdf If you have any questions or need advice please contact our office on (02) 6554 9511. #homebuilder #tjlbiz

08.01.2022 In a ruling that has dominated conversation in insurance circles, the NSW Court of Appeal last week rejected the argument put forward by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) that business interruption policies should not cover Covid-19 pandemic-related losses. The ICA is considering a High Court appeal, however if this appeal is unsuccessful it means businesses who have suffered a loss of income due to the pandemic may be able to claim on their business interruption insurance. This case is a work in progress so there is no need for our business insurance clients to act now, however we will be keeping a very close eye on this case and will keep you updated on any further developments as they unfold. #tjlinsurance #businessinsurance #businessinterruption #covid19
