08.01.2022 SYDNEY 2000 ON THIS DAY: #TeamTLAs Michael Klim, Ian Thorpe, Ashley Callus and Chris Fydler swam to Australias first-ever Olympic gold medal in the mens 4x100m freestyle relay, setting a world record in the process. Klim set Australia up for the victory, setting a world record 48.18sec in the first 100m leg, shaving 0.03 seconds off the former mark, set by Russias Alexander Popov six years earlier. Australia defeated the heavily-favoured Americans and as Thorpe climbed fr...om the pool, the quartet rejoiced before furiously strumming their air guitars in response to American Gary Halls pre-Games prediction that the USA team would smash them like guitars." I just jumped straight at it and probably took it a little bit too far. Its something people still talk about and remember. I have never celebrated that way ever again. People remember the air guitar relay Gary was the first one to come across and congratulate us as well. They showed a lot of respect and we still have a pretty good friendship with all of those guys, especially Gary and myself. We swim because we love it and to give people joy. Thats what I cherish the most out of that event to this day, people thank me for that moment. #MySydney2000
