14.01.2022 Hey there Sunny Coasters . I meet lots of great business owners here in our beautiful region and every once in a while I find myself saying WOW! Well it happ...ened again when I got the opportunity to sit down with Richard Burke, Owner and MD of DIGGERMAN based in Coolum Beach. Diggerman came to life in 2004 after Richard took a change in career. Now I want to come back to this change in career shortly as it is kind of special. Currently employing 26 people here on the Sunshine Coast, Diggerman came to life when Richard bought his first Posi Track Bobcat after he saw one at work on a site Richard was developing. During this period, Richard was into Property Development while the boom was happening on the Sunshine Coast and thought the Posi Track would be great for landscaping the properties he was developing. It wasn’t long before he was being asked by Coral Homes to come onsite and do some work. and this was were Diggerman began. As an FYI, Richard’s son was about 3 at the time and he loved the idea that his Dad had a big toy, and when they were out and about, every time his 3 year would see a tractor or digger, he would say Look Dad a digger man and that’s where the name came from. Love that story. Today, Diggerman provides Earth Moving Services across the Sunshine Coast. But it is another service they offer that will take me back to the start of this article. Richard was originally a Teacher and spent a lot of time in small, 1 teacher schools and other regional schools. Richard has a passion for teaching and finished his career in teaching at Buddina State School as Deputy Principle here on the Sunshine Coast. Now unknown to myself was the Diggerman Training arm of the business which provides training for all types of Machinery Operation, High Risk Licencing, Operating in Confined Spaces, Construction Training, Traffic Control, Chainsaw, Work safely at heights Training the list is massive. Richard identified as his business was expanding on the earthworks side that qualified Operators were difficult to find here on the Sunshine Coast, so he developed a Training Program to use internally. In the early days, Richard’s Father helped with running the training side of the business while Richard ran the earthworks side. Now a Registered Training Organisation, Richard’s training program is now recognised across many industries and they look after many clients in Government, Council and Civil to name a few. Diggerman Earth Moving has its own internal 5 Star Accreditation Program which enables the internal recognition of skilled operators as part of their QA process. Maybe one day this might become part of the Diggerman Training Division. Richards background in education must have helped with the above success. Richard mentioned that they have developed a Civil Start program which he developed after much consultation with the Civil Industry which they offer to people wanting to start a career in Civil which helps open door’s for the students. I could say so much more about Richard Burke and both Diggerman Earthworks and Diggerman Training, but I am going to have to stop here, but not before mentioning that their training grounds out the back look awesome. Particularly if the idea of driving Big Boys Toys and moving dirt and stuff sounds cool. Nice work Richard. See more
