25.01.2022 Hey all, I've decided to take part in the Vinnie's Sleep Out on the 17th of June, so for one night, I'll be sleeping outside to raise awareness and bring home the realities of homelessness. I don't camp as a general rule, so this will be something different for me and genuinely uncomfortable...there is no tent, no roof...just a cardboard box and a sleeping bag, I'm expecting it to be a pretty challenging experience. For those who know me well, you already know my position o...n homelessness and the people affected...for me it is a big deal and I ask for your support to make a small contribution towards this cause that is collectively, as a community all of our responsibility. Your support will help the St Vincent de Paul Society empower more people to get off the streets and into stable accommodation. Vinnies provides counselling, education, health and employment services to help people to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty. Every donation is meaningful. Just fifty dollars can provide a whole family with a warm, nutritious meal this winter. Together we can combat homelessness in our community. Please help me raise funds today! The impact of your generosity will be felt well beyond the 17th of June. https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/fundraisers/amandapulford

22.01.2022 Ask Mick Brace, principle of Realty Blue how he got started in his hugely successful real estate career and you’re in for a funny story. Mick is as committed, tenacious and genuine today as when he was in 2008 and there is a lesson in his back story for all of us. Realty Blue literally started out of the blue, 12 years ago Mick was searching for a home for his family by door knocking on the streets of Burleigh and asking who wanted to sell their propertyto cut a long sto...ry short, he not only eventually found his home (which is still lives in) but also realised he loved real estate and was so awesome at meeting people and talking houses that he decided to get his real estate licence and start selling themimmediately. Mick leads his team of 23 staff across two locations one in Burleigh and the other in Mermaid Beach, judging by the growth of his business, the number of listings they have and the reputation he has built for himself, it’s obvious he’s definitely doing something right. 2020 was a huge year for Realty Blue and the Rate My Agent Awards with Mick personally taking out 5 awards including Agent of the year for Burleigh Heads, Burleigh Waters, #1 agent for Tweed, top 10 agents in QLD and top 100 for Australia. They also took out agency of the year for Burleigh Waters/Heads and Miami. So what do they do differently? Do business with them and you’ll notice their down to earth, honesty and professionalism, they are super easy to work with and are great value for money. Mick and many of the team are Burleigh/Mermaid residents, they are very active in the community, sponsoring a number of events including their own Realty Blue Swim Run and charity events. Realty Blue not only offer the full suite of residential services including sales and rental but also have expanded into commercial sale and leasing as an additional arm to their already large portfolio. If you are thinking about selling your home, commercial site or in need of a new home or business then get in touch with Mick and the team at Realty Blue and they will look after you and your family. www.realtyblue.com.au

19.01.2022 Buying a car can be a stressful time for some people and getting finance can make things even more of a big deal, especially as it can be one of the biggest purchases you make in life. If you don't enjoy the buying process or don't know where to turn to for finance, then go no further than Melanie May owner of WootWheels, a finance company specialising in helping women and first car purchasers get a great deal on finance and help with vehicle purchasing too. Both Mel and h...er husband Chris are financial brokers, Mel's husband already owns Forefront Equipment Finance and Mel noticed that equipment finance was traditionally a bit blokey, so she decided to niche into a female space to make it more accessible for the girls. Wootwheels not only takes care of your car loans, they also take care of sourcing your car if needed. The big benefit to this is that they will try to match their client's repayment serviceability with the car, not find the car and then match their ability to repay the loan and, being finance brokers, they get you the best finance deal and they get you the best car for the deal The great thing about Wootwheels is they are super transparent, honest and offer small business service. Mel prides herself on being available 24/7 and is genuinely passionate about helping to educate her clients along the entire process. For her it's not about making money on the car, it's about getting the best deal for their clients with low fees that big business can't offer. When you meet Mel, it's impossible not to warm to her beautiful, kind and fun personality, she's genuinely lovely person sharing the time between work, family and caring for their 3 year old boy. If you need help in finding the right car, for the right price, with the right finance then go to their Facebook page www.facebook.com/wootwheels

19.01.2022 Amazing how life changes, yet through the process of change the underlying veins of passion still show up to influence what it is that you do in business. Meet Courtney Oliver the highly driven founder of Apogee Coatings, a glass ceramic coating business that is at the beginning of something quite big. As a 13 year old, Court had a passion for motor vehicles and working on them, filling in her free time building drift cars and pocket rocket bikes. Little did she know this ...would lead her back to what she loved, later in life but not before going to uni and studying physiotherapy where she also works part time at Prince Charles hospital in the paediatric emergency department. Apogee coatings began when Court's step dad came across the ridiculously good products overseas and seeing a gap in the market became the Australian distributer for them. Given her background, Court took an immediate interest in what he was doing and started trialing the product on all types of surfaces, not just cars and windscreens and realised she was only scratching the surface (pardon the pun) of what the product could actually do, so she created a strategy to take the product to market. So what is Apogee Coatings? They are a glass ceramic coating company that offers 3 different products, they are the purest product on the market, holding between 88% and 90% glass ceramic content...bearing in mind there are products being used in the market with only 10% ceramic glass. Importantly Apogee has a certification in paint correction, their products are non-toxic, environmentally friendly , are chemical and salt resistant and offer a 5, 7 and 10 year warranty. Glass ceramic coating preserves the life of the surface and if needed restores the surface back to new and sometimes even better. The products have been trialled on multiple surfaces and the results are amazing! Think bathrooms, kitchens, glass screens, tyres, caravans, boats, cars, trucks, cedar doors/windows, timber tables and more...they are now working with some big brands to help them with the life-span of their products. Court is super excited for the endless possibilities Apogee offers and quite frankly, so am I she is loving the freedom that business is giving her and still gets time to skate, swim, run and surf If you want to protect any of your surfaces around the home or on your vehicles then best you check out www.apogeecoatings.com.au

18.01.2022 Workplace safety may not be the sexiest topic to discuss around the water cooler however, it is one of the most important. With more than....workplace accidents happening each year, sadly for many businesses and employees WHS is a conversation that didn't happen soon enough. WHS guru Lydia Plim owner and founder of Safety Makers is someone who takes the subject of workplace safety very seriously...and fair enough. Lydia decided to start Safety Makers back in 2012, her 20 ...years experience in the safety industry included working for the private sector, Federal, State and Local government as well as an advisory officer for a State Safety Regulator. After a redundancy she figured it was time to go out on her own. It wasn't long before Lydia reaped the rewards of going out on her own which included winning the contract as the WHS Venue Manager for the Commonwealth Games. Lydia is not always serious though, she is a massive lover of the land - especially her small farm in the Tweed Valley, which allows her to fuel her passion for the environment, animals, her dog and especially her horses. Lydia has an extensive background in all things horse. This includes, breeding, judging and coaching able bodied riders and disability riders too. If haven't thought about your workplace safety for a while, even if you only have you or a couple of staff, it's something every business owner needs to consider and act upon. Safety Makers strive to make WHS simple, easy to use, compliant with individual legislation and affordable. Lydia is passionate in her belief that everyone has the right to come home safely from work each day, she is qualified, super professional and along with her team member Julie they make sure their customer service and products are the best in the industry. If Lydia isn't on the farm, she's possibly at the amateur theatre, singing, acting, songwriting or even directing live theatre! If you want to avoid a visit from a very unhappy Safety Regulator inspector then you'd best get in touch with Safety Makers, they have over 150 document products on their online shop that will help to keep you compliant and reduce risk of injury in your workplace. www.safetymakers.com.au

15.01.2022 Diamonds are a girls best friend and a man who can create a piece of jewellery to house that diamond (or any other precious stone for that matter) must be an exceptionally great mate . I had the pleasure of sitting down with Nick Drakes, owner of The Jewellery Warehouse and surrounded myself with precious stones, silver and gold, and it was just fine. Nick's uncle founded The Jewellery Warehouse back in 1986 which was then purchased by his parents 25 years ago, during tha...t time the business continued to grow and Nick took over the operations of the business 5 years ago (MADE UP TIME) allowing his parents a life of semi-retirement. The Jewellery Warehouse specialises in sourcing precious gemstones from Central Highland Gemfields, they spent a lot of time in Lightning Ridge when the opal market was booming and continue to make regular visits to the town of Sapphire (886 km NW of Brisbane) to purchase the sought after gem stones from their native place. The jewellery business is a far cry from Nick's degree in fisheries science and it's funny how life takes you down different paths. The Jewellery Warehouse design everything here in Australia and specialises in sapphires, casting, and bespoke customised jewellery including engagement and wedding rings, earrings and pendants with Nick still getting a kick out of creating products for people that they love. Nick offers an exceptionally personalised service for his customers and is happy to meet them at their location to make the process easy for the client and because they have no shopfront, they are able to offer exceptionally competitive prices. If you love your sports then you'll need to keep an eye out for the new range of sports jewellery which has just released. Wear your favourite team in stylish jewellery and in a heap of different codes, available at..... If he's not making jewellery, Nick still gets into his fishing and if he's not doing that, he's working around the home or out camping with the family. So, if you need a special piece made up for your special person at a very special price, you'd best be getting in touch with Nick at www.jewellerywarehouse.com.au

14.01.2022 I always feel fortunate having the opportunity to meet with the amazing local business owners that we have here on the Gold Coast and catching up with former surfing champion and all round good guy Kevin Barr, owner of Barz Optics is no exception! Kevin grew up in Kingscliff and moved to Canberra where he owned a number of water sport, surf and tourism businesses before deciding to head north again as a manufacturers agent for all the big brands including O'Neill, Vans, the i...conic Oakley Sunglasses and more. Having such a close relationship with the large manufacturers gave Kevin an insight into the inner workings of amongst other things, the sunglass industry. Armed with this valuable knowledge in 1996, Kevin was able to locally develop and manufacture a sunglass goggle, designed to protect the eyes against pterigiam - a debilitating condition to the eyes caused by exposure to the elements including sunlight exposure. Barz now produce a large range of adventure, sports and outdoors protective sunglasses. They were first in the world to combine bi focal and photochromic lenses (lenses that change from clear (Cat0) to dark (Cat2) depending on the light and in a range of lens colours and specialise in polarised, bifocal, and prescription lenses. Barz also private labels to some well known big brands and garner their technology from in-house R&D as well as sourcing all over the globe for specialised products. Ongoing access to product technology has meant that Kevin was able to manufacture to a new market and has also developed BZ Optics - bi focal, photochromic sunglasses designed for the cyclists, runners, drivers and other sportspeople who require sporty shades but also need, protection and better vision. Barz hasn't gone unnoticed, winning an Australian Marine Industry Award for the most innovative exported product and was also nominated for a global Dame Award for design and innovation. Check out the huge range at www.barzoptics.com or www.bzoptics.com

14.01.2022 Meet the lovely man that is Greg Davies, owner and founder of Davies Home Loans, a great example of a thriving local business built around trust, experience and... getting the results their clients need. The success of Davies Home Loans can be partly attributed to the creation of strong systems and processes, a skill that was strengthened by Greg's 16 years in the Australian Navy and the Commander of a Naval patrol ship. His role included patrolling the waters between Cairns and Darwin for illegal fishing and immigration. Later he worked for Customs stopping drugs and other dodgy activity coming to Australia by sea along the NSW Coastline. When it was time to leave the Navy Greg undertook a psychometric test to best determine his next career move and he scored so highly in the area of finance he couldn't ignore it and enrolled into a financial planning course. Unfortunately, this was just as the GFC hit and Greg felt the best option for him to follow would be mortgage broking...and that's exactly what he did. Greg and his wife Narelle started Davies Home Loans 15 years ago, Narelle was experienced in the banking sector, so together mortgage broking made sense. Davies Home Loans are different from many brokers, they provide advisory services for their customers instead of just a purely transactional service. This also includes 3 face to face meetings with their clients, automatic annual reviews and will even meet with the solicitor at document sign up if needed. Greg still loves his business and the challenge that comes with understanding the uniqueness of each case, his competitive spirit loves it when they beat the banks and he really feels a huge sense of success in helping people to purchase a property. Greg is very much a family-oriented business owner with great values and a heap of experience. If you need to sort yourself a home loan, a business loan, or investment loan, then look no further than Greg and the team at www.davieshomeloans.com.au Another example of a great local business! If you would like your business featured or know of another business owner who would, please let me know in the comments below

13.01.2022 A passion for education and an uncontrollable entrepreneurial drive make up the ingredients of Kirsty Gibbs, educator and business owner of Learning Blocks, an education centre for children and parents alike. Originally trained as a high school teacher Kirsty did a stint in England in 2006- 2009 and found herself teaching primary aged children, she loved it so much so that she decided to come home to Australia and start her own business in education. After nearly purchasing... a franchise she Kirsty decided that she’d have a crack at it herself and started Learning Blocks in Burleigh and then a second centre in Kingscliff. Needing to downsize after the birth of her own baby Kirsty decided to change her business model to something more manageable and turned it into a mobile business allowing her clients to stay in the comfort of their own homes. In between all of this Kirsty has also developed a number of school readiness and education tools for children and for parents which she then sold off. Learning Blocks is well equipped to specialise in reading difficulties, individual and group learning programs as well as online parent courses designed to empower parents with the skills needed to lead, educate and participate in their children’s learning. All staff at Learning Blocks are qualified teachers who offer personalised services and no standard 'on size fits all' computer programs. It is important for Kirsty that they understand the gaps in the individual’s learning to be able to tailor a program specific to their needs as they find that is where they get the best results. When not working Kirsty is hanging with her 2 girls and hubby, or maybe playing touch footy. If you want to give your child a head start with their education, get in contact with Kirsty at www.learningblockscentre.com.au We believe that strong local communities are built on strong local business! 11.01.2022 As a child growing up in her father’s pattern shop, Rebecca Whan may not have realised the invaluable lessons she was learning at the time but as an adult, now thanks those moments for providing her with the basis for her very successful career as an architect and Principal of the patternshop* Rebecca forged her 20-year career across the globe, working in the UK, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Mexico and Sydney before deciding to slow it down a notch and focus her attention within smalle...r communities. Coming from a close family who spent time camping around Gold Coast Rebecca felt it was time to move back close to her family (and the beach) so decided to open her own studio in Murwillumbahanyway, she figured what’s the worst thing that could happen? So, 18 months ago Rebecca opened the doors to the Patternshop*, as the newbie in town she soon realised that she had no connections and knew nobody but thanks to being pushed into networking events by an old boss, made it her thing to get out in front of people. Fast forward to today and Patternshop* employs five local architects and has some of the largest projects in the area including the Regents Theatre art deco redevelopment in Murwillumbah which consists of retail, arts and entertainment precincts. Rebecca’s experience is diverse, her commercial expertise spans across high residential, hospitals, eco-consulting and sustainability projects and until recently were lecturing and critiquing at Swinbourne and Newcastle Universities. Rebecca has also been short-listed for the MBA Association’s Women in Building Awards and sits on the Board of the Business Chamber. Still preferring to hand-draw her projects and lean on her creative side, Rebecca loves mixing art with science as she works through problems with builders. As a female in a male-dominated industry, one of Rebecca’s strengths is her ability to listen to what her clients want, she loves people and thrives not only on building relationships but also the complexities and need to constantly problem solve on a daily basis. If you are in need of a quality architect who has her clients best interests in mind then I suggest getting in touch with Rebecca and her team. http://www.patternshop.studio

10.01.2022 I had a very interesting conversation recently with Darren Bartsch one of the founding partners of Barrana a company whose purpose is to us software and technology to solve business problems and help business owner become more efficient, effective and profitable. Born in Loxton 300km from Adelaide, Darren played footy for the SANFL in Adelaide and then Melbourne with Essendon before starting a Jim’s Mowing business during its first year of inception as a franchise. Jim’s... was a top job for a 21 year old (even if he’d never mowed a lawn before) and even though he loved it, he moved off to Darwin in 1997 to manage property at the MGM Grand. Skip forward to 2004 and with a small family in his care, Darren decided to teach himself how to build websites, it wasn’t long after that he met his business partner and they moved into the consulting space building software and websites for businesses. Today Barrana is thriving, their focus is on building web based and non-web based apps, with a specialisation in blockchain technology. The benefit to blockchain is the removal of the middle man in the transaction process which works particularly well in the supply chain space, finance, real estate and energy providers. Barrana is currently working on some large projects building efficiencies in the in the healthcare space by creating time dated stamped documentation systems using blockchain, this interestingly alleviates errors and ambiguities within the system, supporting both the healthcare provider, staff and patients. Darren is an extremely kind man, his genuine curiosity, interest in solving problems and love of people keep his passion for his work well and truly alive. If you have an idea you want to bring to market, or you just feel like changing the world (for a good cause), get in touch with Darren and his team. www.barrana.com.au

08.01.2022 I found another fabulous Gold Coast business doing things a little bit differently. Meet Mark McFadyen, Director of Lepack a local company providing breakfast packs and snack packs to a myriad of B2B clients across the country. Originally from North Queensland, Mark is an experienced business operator having run crocodile farms out of Malanda in the Atherton Tablelands - 85kms from Cairns as well as Cattle Farms, he saw the opportunity to purchase LePack 18 months ago and... moved himself and his two teenaged daughters to the Gold Coast for a sea change. LePack has been running for more than 10 years, their clients include those in the tourism industry, from tour groups to hotels, accommodation facilities, schools, corporate and event planners. 05.01.2022 Here’s another fabulous example of a family-owned business going from strength to strength. Meet Casey Cooper, Managing Director of Cooper Communications, a family-owned business that has embraced the continuous and exciting advancements in technology for the past 22 years exceptionally well to their advantage. Back in the day, Casey’s father Steve was a Telstra (Telecom) technician/systems engineer and after Telecom privatised much of their business, he decided he would d...o his own thing by starting Cooper Communications with Casey’s mum Debby by his side taking care of all the administration. Casey has worked in the business for the past 15 years, starting from the bottom up he began as a technician, cabling, networking, sales and now as GM works alongside his little brother Hayden who looks after the technical side of the business. Cooper Communications prides themselves on educating their customer to give them the power to make informed decisions regarding the technology in their workplace. They look after all things tech for the SME, from information technology, phone systems, data networks, cloud technology, software, hardware, security and IOT AND everything is onshore...so no annoying call centres! Technology moves rapidly and Casey thrives in this space, their team are regularly updated through training programs to maintain consistency and knowledge to ensure they are constantly bringing cutting edge benefits to their clients to make their workplaces more efficient and safe. One of the Cooper Communications real points of difference is their independence; having no alignment to a specific brand allows them to focus on working for the best interests of their customers instead of their suppliers. Their autonomy allows Cooper Communications to provide the best solution for their clients instead of pushing a brand for their stakeholders. Casey isn’t all about tech however, and if you have ever swung a golf club there is a fair chance you may have bumped into him on the course as he holds a fairly nifty handicap and if he’s not playing golf then he's’ quite possibly planning his next European vacation. If your organisation needs to improve anything to do with electronic communication then you’re best to contact the team at Cooper Communication. www.coopercommunication.com.au We believe that strong local communities are built on strong local business! Debbie's experience is valued in the community as an accredited ITEC trainer, allowing beauty therapists and cosmetic tattoo artists the accreditation. The Beauty Spot specialises in cosmetic tattooing for eyebrows and in an industry that is fairly unregulated it's important to note that Deb holds a full body art license. 03.01.2022 Turning your passion into an innovation and a business that brings delight to the consumer is a dream for many and is what Dylan Rickit, Director of The Laughing Pug Aus Coffee Company has managed to achieve. An ex barista, Dylan spent four years working on the oil rigs in Papua New Guinea, it was here that he came across the amazing (and somewhat unknown) PNG coffee beans that grew throughout the country. His love for the coffee was so much that he would spend hours with hi...s mates banging the beans through pillow cases so that they could drink itoh and that there was no other way to get a coffee Upon moving back to Manly in Sydney as a barista and pouring 200-300 coffees per day Dylan didn’t forget how good the coffee beans from PNG were and was struggling to find any coffee anywhere that was up to par with what he had experienced overseas. Then, in 2016 while visiting family in New Zealand his cousin Richard showed Dylan the super clever coffee drip bags from Japan that he had come across which were designed to hang over your cup using origami techniquesremembering the love for the PNG coffee and the people there, they knew by combining the two, they were on to the beginning of a very good idea. The brand The Laughing Pug came from the Latin phrase for pug - ‘multum in parvo’ which means ‘much in little’, the individual drip coffee bags are representative of this term and it’s a great talking point! Their original coffee drip bags clients’ include boutique hotels, throughout Australia and their coffee beans are found in many different cafes across the country. Richard decided to launch the business in New Zealand but it didn’t go so well, so they decided to bring the product to Australia and launch the business out of their garage, get a contract roaster in and start where many great brands startat the Burleigh Markets. Selling at the markets was pretty archaic to their set up now, they literally filled the little drip bags by hand using a cut off plastic bottle as a measurer (which they still have framed on display), to taking their first few big orders, getting into the Earth Markets and now have 12 staff producing a ton of coffee per month out of their Burleigh location. Rick is still in NZ, in 2020 they bought in a new partner and director Marina who is also in NZ and helping lead the team into a global distribution model. The coffee is a seriously amazing concept and a great tasting one too. If you need a proper coffee on the go, or just love coffee then hit these guys up at... www.thelaughingpug.com.au

02.01.2022 I got to catch up with Vishen and Shu, owners of DNA Signs, a great local business based in Currumbin but servicing all the way between Ballina and Brisbane. Vishen and his brother Shu purchased DNA Signs 3 years ago after a long search to find a business where they could work together and would suit both their skillsets. Vishen has extensive experience in data analytics but was tired of working in the corporate space and his brother Shu wanted to put his 13 years experien...ce in graphic design to good use. DNA Signs design, manufacture and install signs for business shop fronts, digital printing, indoor wall graphics, banners, brochures and specialise in vehicle wraps for business, tradies and larger vehicles such as heavy trucks. They have been able to distinguish themselves as a company that offers a unique flare and feel to their designs and with his background in marketing he has been able to get a good understanding for their clients requirements. The Covid-19 environment has seen a spike in signage requirements as businesses enforce social distancing and hygiene regulations as businesses deal with the changes to the environment. DNA Signs only uses top quality products such as 3M, Orafol and Avery. The benefit of being a small company is their flexibility in being able to offer a personalised service with great turnaround times. If you are after a great local company who will help you make sure your business gets noticed with great signage then you need to get in touch with Vishen and Shu from DNA Signs. www.dnasigns.com.au

02.01.2022 Some things are meant to be together like wine and cheese, chocolate and strawberries Zoe Madden and Kate Gonzalez, the two gorgeous and very proud owners of That Face Place a brand new cosmetic injectable and skin clinic based on the highway at Palm Beach. Zoey is a registered nurse and Kate holds degrees in nursing and paramedic practice, together they have over 25 years combined experience in nursing and facial rejuvenation - which is a note worth taking in this indu...stry.
