17.01.2022 GREAT POTATO GROWING CHALLENGE OF 2020. The lockdown due to the virus has led us to think of ways we can all "garden alone together". We don't have any organised working bees at present but some members come to the garden as part of their exercise routine. This competition is among members of the Turramurra Lookout Community Garden located in Sydney Australia. ... BUT ANYONE READING THIS CAN GET INVOLVED AT HOME. Buy some certified disease free potatoes and see how they go. If you decide to join in please let us know and we'll be interested to follow your progress. We'll have updates to post here so we can all learn something about growing potatoes. The GREAT POTATO GROWING CHALLENGE OF 2020 launched on ANZAC DAY. Here is the deal for members. +Collect your "Certified Disease Free" potato. +Take it home. +Plant it in a container of your choice in growing media of your choice and grow the potato however you like. +When ready to harvest bring it in its container (or picture of container if you can't move it) to the garden for the weigh-in on a date to be announced but roughly 4 months later probably around mid August. Awards will be given for The heaviest crop The ugliest potato Most original idea for container Most original idea for growing media. Competitors will be issued with one potato of each of the three species we purchase. If you want to buy a different type or even use one from your own pantry that is okay. This is a free-range competition so do your own research and grow this however you like, but to be fair just one seed potato of each species to start with please. We are hoping for creative ideas that will yield the best results. So have fun and go your hardest. Good Luck PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH but if you haven't done this before, as a guide, you might be looking for a sunny location and a container about 50cm high with a capacity of around 15 litres. The container might be a plastic pot, a hessian bag, chicken wire, bricks or anything else you want to try. Your growing media might be potting mix, compost, straw, garden soil, shredded paper or who knows what.
09.01.2022 This very successful insect hotel is in Zurich Botanical Garden. Photographed in the northern hemisphere summer in 2019, It is buzzing with tenants. Some great ideas for us to try when we rebuild our Insect Hotel ready for the coming spring.
06.01.2022 The garden at night has an interesting cast of characters and is worth exploring. Here is a report from TLC Garden member Julie. "The other night I was out in the garden on a search & kill exercise looking for slugs & snails that have been eating my new seedlings. I had my torch & as the light swept across the wall below the deck, I spied this strange happening. I rushed inside to get the camera. Here is a photo below, but the link to David Attenborough’s filming on YouTube is much better as you can watch the whole thing." https://youtu.be/wG9qpZ89qzc
