20.01.2022 The Council gives its consent to the revised statute of the Ombudsman to further guarantee its independence The Council has agreed to give its consent to the revised statute of the European Ombudsman, which will update the regulations and general conditions governing the performance of the Ombudsman's duties, replacing the current framework following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. The aim of the Ombudsman is to help to uncover maladministration in the activities o...f the Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies, with the exception of the Court of Justice of the European Union acting in its judicial role. Where appropriate, the Ombudsman can make recommendations, proposals for solutions and suggestions for improvement. "The European Ombudsman plays an important part in our EU institutional framework, notably to ensure the trust from our citizens by promoting good administration by our institutions. The new Statute allows the European Ombudsman to exercise his or her duties under a strong and clear mandate. Many of the provisions have been clarified, allowing the European Ombudsman to act in a renewed, reinvigorated manner, for the benefit of the citizens of Europe." 12.01.2022 Ethiopia: Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union On June 21, a majority of Ethiopian voters will be invited to participate in elections. Some constituencies will vote at a later stage, in part due to security and logistical challenges. The European Union (EU) takes note of this important step and recalls the fundamental democratic right of all Ethiopian citizens to be able to vote, everywhere in the country. Aware of the importance of these ele...ctions for the political transition in Ethiopia, the EU has supported the electoral process and the work of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE). The EU commends the efforts deployed by NEBE personnel around the country, and welcomes the public commitment of the Ethiopian government to hold democratic and peaceful elections. Yet, the EU regrets the impossibility of sending an election observation mission. Ethiopia remains in a complex domestic situation. Concerned with ongoing violence across the country, human rights violations and political tensions, harassment of media workers and detained opposition members, the EU calls upon the government and local and regional authorities to ensure a transparent and safe process, to guarantee the free and equal participation of all political parties and candidates who are running, to facilitate the participation of all citizens, to ensure freedom of the press and of expression as well as the safety of journalists, other media workers and election observers and to provide full logistical and administrative support to NEBE. The EU also calls on all actors to refrain from spreading hate speech and from calling for acts of violence.

08.01.2022 Earlier today I convened a meeting of the National Cabinet to discuss the Australian COVID-19 vaccine program following the latest advice the Government receive...d from ATAGI late last week the AstraZeneca vaccine is now recommended for people aged 60 years and over. Our vaccine rollout continues to expand, with over 6.5 million doses of vaccines having been administered so far in Australia. Over 1 in 4 adult Australians have now had their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Australia’s medical experts have made it clear that for those Australians who have had their first dose of AstraZeneca, they are strongly recommended to keep their bookings and get their second dose of AstraZeneca when it’s due. National Cabinet agreed on the imperative to work together to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to Australians as quickly as possible. During the meeting, the head of Operation COVID Shield, Lieutenant General JJ Frewen provided each state and territory government with planning projections of Pfizer and AstraZeneca doses for their jurisdiction over the remainder of 2021, to inform state and territory vaccination plans. I look forward to continuing to work with the Premiers and Chief Ministers of Australia as part of the National Cabinet to address issues and find solutions for the health and economic impacts of this terrible virus.
