16.01.2022 It has been another wonderful week working with our students. The next stage in the Performance Horse cattle work program for the unit "Ride horses to carry out basic stock work" was moving on to working with cattle. Students participated in the activities of introducing their "trainers" to cattle, separating a single beast from a small mob, effective positioning when working with cattle and moving cattle around the laneways, yards and arena using low stress stock hand...ling techniques. These stock work activities also provided students with the oppurtunity to put in to practice the foundation training program they have been working on with their horses and how it assists in making a horse more efficient, confident and relaxed when carrying out stock work. We have now begun heading out for some paddock musters. Stay tuned for further updates.

14.01.2022 It is so great to have the students back. During the past few weeks the Performance Horse Course students have been participating in the practical training activities for the unit "Ride Horses to Carry out Basic Stockwork" . Students have used the training tools of the mechanical cow and the "Tow Cow" to learn about safe and effective positioning when working cattle with horses and low stress stock handling techniques. The use of the mechanical cow and "Tow Cow" gives o...ur students the oppurtunity to learn about working with livestock in a controlled manner before transferring these skills onto live cattle. It also provides our students with the oppurtunity in training young horses to work around cattle in a calm manner and to continue to work on our horses foundation training fundamentals whilst giving them a job to focus on including turn arounds, stops, body control, softness and confidence. 13.01.2022 Another brilliant week was had working alongside the Performance Horse Course students and we haven't wanted the term to come to an end. The next stage in the "Ride horses to carry out basic stock work" program was heading out to a variety of small paddocks to undertake group musters. Students worked in teams to muster and move cattle to and from various paddocks whilst negotiating obstacles and where possible substituting trees as gateways (see video in next post). Co...mmunicating effectively with team mates and their horses was a key priority for students in these activities to ensure low stress stock handling techniques were carried out. Students also worked on preparing their horses and themselves for riding in different terrains such as gullies and water crossings before we headed out for our whole group muster throughout the varying landscape of the Tocal College farm. We look forward to sharing an update on our whole group muster shortly. See more

03.01.2022 A fantastic end to our cattle work program was to move a mob of cattle from "Canobies Yards" to "Calving Yards" which was a 5 hour round trip. We just want to say how proud we were of the way our students carried out this job on their horses, putting into practice all they have achieved within themselves and their horses throughout the program. Staff would like to say a huge thankyou to beef manager Mal Burke and his team for organising the cattle for our students to work wi...th throughout this program. Have a peek at the video as we move the mob throughout the picturesque Tocal College farm.
