25.01.2022 Certificate III students that had completed units remotely during our Covid break earlier in the year, were able to spend some time in the welding shed and given the opportunity to get creative. While learning the basics of welding and metal working they created some great small projects that they were all very proud of. This will lead into more substantial projects during Cert IV but was a great reward for their efforts while not being able to attend the college. As the students made great use of old used horse shoes Tocal would like to put the call out to anyone who has old shoes laying around we love to have them donated for future small projects.

15.01.2022 Good luck to Emma, our Cert IV student who has purchased Trey, a donated dog from Peter Crowe of Macelbri Kelpies of Timor. They are continuing their training together and are soon off to work. We wish you all the best. Below is the story of the working dogs at Tocal over the past 12 months. The working dogs at Tocal has had a great first year, it would not of been possible without Peter Crowe for the donation of Trey and also Thanks to Ben Crowe of Glenfaba Kelpies and Stock... Horses for his support with students over the years at Tocal Field days, pup donations and for running his working dog clinics. Cert IV Ag students who had done dog training in 2019, were eager to continue working dogs this year. We were lucky enough to have had a handful of pups brought to Tocal for dog training around September last year. One of these young dogs was Trey, kindly donated by Peter Crowe. We also had Tocal Boof, a started going dog for the students to work with from early 2019. Older dogs of my own were also brought in at various stages for students to use. We found this was helpful for the students to see different stages of dog training and to show them what they were aiming for from the pups. With these unstarted pups starting late 2019, the students did all the work for their training. They had a roster for feeding, care and exercise which the students were eager to do outside of class and training hours, including weekends. A big thank you to Paul Geddes and the cert IVs for the design and building of the great kennels for the dogs to use. They are fantastic. Thanks to Mal Burke for use of the Tocal sheep flock for dog and student training. I believe it’s important for students to see how useful working dogs are in agriculture for both cattle and sheep. Hopefully this has given them a good basic understanding for training their own dogs or at least to show them what to look for when purchasing a working dog. Unfortunately we did not have Murrurundi dog sale for the students to go to and watch dogs of all stages being sold, But that is just one of the challenges 2020 has given us. We are very pleased with the students enthusiasm in the working dogs. They want to learn these skills and were always helpful and keen to do the work for the dog’s upkeep. Cert III are now taking over the dog’s care and will continue the training of the dogs Cert IV started with; Penny, Carol, Stan and Benny. There will also be young pups soon for the students to start. Again thanks to Peter Crowe once again for another donation of a pup, as well. As another pup being donated, a joint venture from Ben Crowe and myself. I will also bring the older dogs there again for the students to work with. I’m looking forward to another round of students keen for working dogs. It’s early days yet but it seems like a good number are interested again. - Kendal Neilson.

11.01.2022 It’s been one year since we launched Honey and Pollen Flora of South-Eastern Australia at the 40th Tocal Beekeeper’s Field Day. Over a thousand beekeepers have bought one!
