17.01.2022 With vast quantities of hay having recently been cut and baled along with the rainfall being experienced it is inevitable that we will see more hay fires going into summer. Spontaneous combustion occurs when moist hay heats up due to a combination of natural microbial and chemical reactions. If enough air (oxygen) is present the moist hay may get hot enough to ignite, with fire then spreading through the stack or shed. ... Remember: Check your haystack by inserting a metal rod or stake into the hay. If the rod or stake comes out and is hot, you may have a problem. Regularly inspect haystacks, particularly in hay sheds. If possible store your hay in several locations on your property. Try to avoid storing machinery in the same shed; and Maintain firebreaks around your stored haystacks.

16.01.2022 A total fire ban has been declared for Tocumwal tomorrow. Tuesday 1st December. TOTAL FIRE BAN RULES: A total fire ban means no fires out in the open. A total fire ban helps limit the potential of fires developing.... During a Total Fire Ban you cannot light, maintain or use a fire in the open, or to carry out any activity in the open that causes, or is likely to cause, a fire. General purpose hot works (such as welding, grinding or gas cutting or any activity that produces a spark or flame) are not to be done in the open. The NSW RFS strongly recommends you reconsider activities such as such using a tractor or slashing, to help reduce the chance of a fire starting on your property. Under certain conditions, the NSW RFS may issue a Harvest Safety Alert.

15.01.2022 : There is nothing left to burn. : Only 6.9% of NSW was impacted by bushfire in the 2019/20 fire season. ... : Grass fires are not as dangerous as bushfires. : Grassfires can travel three times faster then bushfires and are extremely dangerous. Grassfires tend to be less intense and produce fewer embers than bushfires, but still generate enormous amounts of radiant heat that can result in serious injury or death. : There will always be a fire truck available to fight a bushfire threatening my home. : There will never be as many fire trucks as there are houses. Do not depend on a fire truck being available at your home. : The emergency services will tell me when it's time to leave. : Some fires start and spread so quickly there may not be any time for a warning. If you get a Bush Fire Alert, you must take it seriously. Failure to take action can result in death or injury to you or your family members. : The best plan in a bushfire is to stay and defend the house until it looks too bad, like when the flames are at the house. You should then go somewhere else to shelter. : Tragically, many of those who have lost their lives in past fires left the decision to evacuate far too late, sometimes abandoning a home which afforded significant protection from radiant heat to be caught in the open or in a car as the fire front passed. It only takes 5 minutes to improve or make a plan that will give your property, your family and yourself the best chance of survival. #BushFireSurvivalPlan #GetReadyWeekend #FiresNearMe #RFS

01.01.2022 Fact: Your safest option is to leave early. A bush fire can be a terrifying situation, intense heat and flames will make you tire quickly, it will be difficult to see and breathe. You may become confused or disorientated. Powerlines and fallen trees can block roads and make driving dangerous. It’s always better to leave early, before the fire arrives. Visit myfireplan.com.au and make a bush fire survival plan, it will help you make important decisions like when to leave or what you need to be prepared to stay.
