20.01.2022 Proper Care With Variegated Plants Variegated plants ( featuring leaves with white edges or white flecks) often need more light than their green cousins. Keep t...hem nearer to a window so that they can get all the light that they need.( INDIRECT SUNLIGHT)Plants acclimatise slowly to different surroundings by changing their leaf orientation and structure. Water them once a week or in every 10days depending on the climate.. You should use a well-drained type of soil mix. When watering, allow the water to drain from the bottom of your pot to avoid root rot. There Are Many Types of Variegation 1.Blister Variegation, is sometimes due to visual effects caused by reflection of light from the leaf surface. This can happen when the air layer is located just under the epidermis rsulting in a white or silvery reflection. 2. Chimecal Variegation is the most common type of variegation. Caused by a genetic mutation, plants show two different chromosomal make ups in a single plant where some tissue is able to produce chlorophyll and other is not. The result is white or yellow zones inter -mixed with the solid green form. Depending on the plant and the cause of variegation, the variegated form maybe stable or unstable. Unstable variegated plants may revert to their solid green form. Variegated plants may be also less vigorous; for example ,leaves that emerge solid white on variegated Monstera are unable to photosynthesize, and so they typically dont last very long. 3. Pattern-Gene Variegation sometimes called Pigmentented or Natural Variegation. Some variegated plants aren't mutatants at all, but rather are naturally patterned. 4. Viral Variegation Some variegated leaves are actually caused by viruses, such as the Mosaic virus. Though not super common, sometimes the resulting variegation from a virus is desirable and can be reproduced. A variegation is not easily induced and can't be done so at home. Best to get a cutting of a variegated plant and grow more from it.. Happy Gardening
