19.01.2022 TOXIC PLANTS The next plant in our toxin series is a big problem for dogs that chew. It is the cycad family, otherwise known as Sago Palms. These are an extrem...ely common plant in Queensland gardens due to their hardy drought tolerance. Unfortunately every part of the plant is extremely toxic - seeds, leaves and roots. The toxin causes acute liver necrosis, or liver failure. Patients present because they are nauseous (drooling and/or vomiting) and lethargic. There may be a history of access, such as chewing a root while the owners are digging out or replanting. I have also had a case where a bird dropped a seed in the yard, and the seed was brought in for identification along with the very unwell family pet (which had been chewing on this unknown seed). In the later stages there will be signs of liver failure, such as yellow gums, and blood clotting issues. Once these signs occur, the prognosis is grim. The best chance of successful treatment is early decontamination (which may include gastric lavage or stomach pump under anaesthetic), IV fluids, anti-nausea medications and liver supportive medications. If you suspect your pet has chewed any part of this plant then seek veterinary attention ASAP.
