25.01.2022 Fire Danger Period is just around the corner for Mansfield Shire

23.01.2022 Spring has sprung and all that jazz, and lots of folks are starting to wonder what the weather has in store for us for the coming fire season. Well, maybe not everyone, but at least I am. So here's the latest information from the Bushfires & Natural Hazards CRC as it relates to Victoria. Please note that this assessment only covers the next 3 months.... "The above average rainfall experienced during winter has substantially reduced the risk of campaign bushfires in Victoria's east for the outlook period. Elsewhere, much of Victoria has experienced average to below average rainfall during winter. Parts of the Mallee, Wimmera and Far South West are drier than normal, however the current climactic signals indicate that there is a high chance of above median rainfall across Victoria during spring. The strength of this signal is higher north of the Divide compared to the south of the Divide. As a result, greater uncertainty exists for the bushfire outlook in western Victoria. It is possible that occurrences of hot, dry periods may be enough to offset the wetter signal associated with possible La Nina conditions during spring. Overall, the influence of a possible La Nina is expected to reduce the risk of prolonged fire activity across most of Victoria, leading to an assessment of normal fire potential for the outlook period for the entire state. Short duration fires in grasslands and drier forests/woodlands are still likely to occur by late spring, depending on fire weather conditions and grassland curing."

23.01.2022 Advice for NE Victoria residents on preparing your property for the coming season was highlighted in a post last month. The good folks at the District 23 Headquarters can now also be contacted via email if you're looking for some help. Details are in the image.

22.01.2022 A great E-learning opportunity for those who care for vulnerable people in our community. The course takes around 45-50 minutes to complete, but it's time well invested.

22.01.2022 An ideal opportunity for you to sit back, have a cuppa and listen to some good advice about prepping your property for the coming fire season.

22.01.2022 Something simple that could make a huge difference. I didn’t know about this and assume that many others don’t either.

22.01.2022 Just in case you see some smoke rising far away to the North in the next 24 hours, there's a planned burn going to occur near Tatong. The attached map will give you a better idea.

21.01.2022 Hi all, here's a post from the new Community Based Bushfire Management (CBBM) coordinator, Felicity Sloman. "Greetings to you all. Update Community Based Bushfire Management program Tolmie Community.... I am delighted to take on the role as your new facilitator for the Tolmie CBBM. Your previous facilitator, Sue Hare will still be in touch in her role as Emergency Management Officer with Mansfield Shire. So, considering our Covid -19 situation, I have met (online) with your CFA Captain, Rob and your CFA Community Safety Officer, Chuck. We talked about where to from here. At this stage the feeling was to wait and see what happens; so not to do a CBBM zoom. In the meantime I encourage you all to continue on with your usual property preparation and reviewing your bushfire escape plan. May I recommend some essential viewing Big Weather (and how to survive it) on ABC iview. Please do contact me if you have any new ideas regarding community bushfire management. I look forward to meeting with you in person, I hope, in the not too distant future. 20.01.2022 CFA PLAN & PREPARE TEAM 0437 247 199 If you want to be fire safe this summer, check this out!... The North East Region of the CFA (which covers all of Mansfield Shire) has recently commenced a free service providing information on planning and preparing for the coming fire season. The service is primarily aimed at those members of the public who may not have access to, or have difficulty in navigating, the internet. Trained Community Education officers will take your call and can get in touch with you at a time that suits you, via whatever communication method works best. Topics include: Understanding your bushfire risk Property preparation for bushfire Burning off safely Can we find you and will our fire vehicles fit through your gates What is a firefighting water supply Firefighting equipment and maintenance Pets and bushfire Understanding fire danger ratings Where to gain trusted information during emergencies What you can and cannot do during fire restrictions Bushfire planning for your household At the moment, calls are limited to business hours, with most queries likely to be answered on the spot. More detailed conversations may require a CFA member to do a follow-up, which could be done outside of business hours if that suits the caller. So if you know anyone that might benefit from this service, please pass on the mobile phone number - 0437 247 199 See more

20.01.2022 During the pre-season CFA briefing for brigades yesterday, it was mentioned that the start of the Fire Danger Period (FDP) for the Mansfield area was likely to be the first or second week of December. The window for burning off is closing. Please note that this is NOT the official declaration of the FDP, but an estimation given current conditions. Official notification is still forthcoming.

19.01.2022 For interest, the recent fire at the Paps started from a burnoff of domestic rubbish. The statement 'it was out yesterday' (or words to that effect) was overh...eard. Safe to say that the fire wasn't out, as evidenced by all the burnt ground up the Paps hillside, and the attendance of resources from as far away as Tatong and Alexandra (not to mention the helicopters). But it provides us all with a good lesson - if you're not willing to stick your hand into the ashes of your burnoff/campfire or whatever, then it's not out! And remember, only use water to extinguish your fire, not soil or dirt. Here endeth the lesson.... See more

18.01.2022 Hi Folks, The webinar on grassfire threat is set for 7.30pm tomorrow night. If you want to join us then go to the event posted on 10 December and register. Al...though some 27 people said they would come to the event, we only have less than half that number registered at the moment . If the day of the week or the timing is preventing others from attending, is there sufficient interest in having a second webinar on a Saturday or Sunday? Nominate a time and we'll come to some sort of compromise. We're here to help you - to get you prepared for the coming fire season. Spread the word so we can preach to as big an audience as we can!

16.01.2022 Don't forget...the 8th of October.

16.01.2022 Grass fires - faster than you think!

16.01.2022 Fire Action Week, 19 to 25 October, is Victoria's annual fire planning and preparation week. It's a time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live, prepare your property, and talk to loved ones about what you'll do the stay safe from fire. Making informed decisions is vital to your safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared.... This week, talk to family, friends and neighbours about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you'll do on hot, dry, windy days.

16.01.2022 One of the issues raised at this week's Community Based Bushfire Management (CBBM) meeting was defibrillators, specifically whether there would be any interest in a potential bulk purchase to try to get these lifesaving devices into more homes in Tolmie and our surrounding areas.

15.01.2022 With all the rain around this year, has your fireplace been burning wood that isn't as dry as it should be? Or maybe you're using cheaper types of firewood to keep yourself warm? If so, there could be a build up in your flue that not only affects the efficiency of your fire, but could also cause a flue fire in the future. It pays to check your flue/chimney and get it cleaned regularly, not only to give you peace of mind but also to ensure your hard earned $'s aren't just going up in smoke! (Apologies for the terrible pun....)

15.01.2022 Check out the ‘Big Weather’ program on the ABC via iView. It gives a fantastic example why you should never get trapped in your car during a bushfire. If your fire plan is to leave, make sure you leave early. Have a trigger point, based on a Fire Danger Rating, and stick to it!

14.01.2022 Spontaneous ignition is the leading cause of haystack fire in Victoria, and just one damp bale is enough to ignite a haystack. CFA Commander Luke Waterson takes you through some ways to prevent haystack fires starting on your property

14.01.2022 For all those folks with a written and up-to-date fire plan - a huge pat on the back! With COVID-19 swirling all around us, those of you whose plan is to Leave Early may wish to consider some additional precautions as part of your plan. The attached image should enable you to fill in the gaps.

13.01.2022 Updated with a link to the Webinar recording, plus passcode.

12.01.2022 Wow....just wow! Sometimes as a brigade member you get bowled over by the generosity shown by the community, be it a free meal at a takeaway store or a simple... gesture such as a sincere thank you for doing your job. And occasionally you get smacked to the floor by gestures like those from the Mansfield Bushmarkets committee, who generously donated equipment to the brigade that will potentially be a lifesaver for crew members of the brigade's ultralight vehicle. Specifically, the equipment is a fire hose attachment that introduces a solution into the vehicle's firefighting water, resulting in a fire proof gel that can be used to coat the vehicle. This coating then protects the vehicle, and more importantly the crew, from the heat and direct flame contact associated with a burnover. And if that wasn't enough, April and John Currie then donated a brand new defibrillator for carriage on the ultralight! This means that both operational firefighting vehicles in the brigade now have the lifesaving capability that a defibrillator offers. So a heartfelt thank you to April, John and all the committee members of the Mansfield Bushmarkets - your support has made a real difference to the safety of our members. In our current Covid environment, the photo shows Rob Allan (R), the brigade captain, shaking hands (in a socially-distanced manner) with April and John Currie following the handover of the equipment mentioned above. 11.01.2022 Hi all,A Total Fire Ban has been declared for NE Victoria for Monday 25 Jan 2021. This means:

11.01.2022 MFB Acting Chief Executive Officer/Chief Officer David Bruce has called on all Victorians to check that their smoke alarms are installed, working, and in the right location. There wasn’t a working smoke alarm present in more than one in ten of the residential[1] fires MFB attended last year. It’s concerning to see that some Victorians are still not getting the message a smoke alarm will give you vital early warning and can save your life. ... We want Victorians to go beyond ensuring there is a working smoke alarm in their home and install them in the right location, and interconnect multiple alarms. CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said while the majority of households have a least one smoke alarm, a recent survey of Victorians showed only 16% of people had smoke alarms in their bedrooms, and only 11% of people had interconnected smoke alarms. Put simply; interconnected smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, living area and hallway for your family’s best protection, he said. In the past 10 years CFA has responded to more than 17,000 residential fires, with more than 400 resulting in death or serious injury, he said. We all know the lifesaving impact smoke alarms can have. Fire safety is no accident. The only way to ensure your smoke alarm is working is to check and test it.

09.01.2022 Just out of interest, the fire at Merrijig on Thursday was caused by a ride-on mower and resulted in some 50-60 acres being burnt out. If you're going to mow dr...y vegetation (ie vegetation that is not green) you MUST have either: A knapsack spray pump, fully charged with at least 9 litres of water, or A water fire extinguisher, fully charged and maintained at the correct pressure, again with a capacity of at least 9 litres. We are all aware of the massive amounts of dry grass in the area after a bumper Spring. Please don't be the person responsible for turning it all to ash...

08.01.2022 It's an open invitation....

07.01.2022 Hi folks, Just to be absolutely clear, if you’re planning on attending the webinar on grassfire safety on Tuesday 15 December evening, you need to register via ...the FB event that I’ve posted. If you registered via my initial post about the event, then you need to re-register via the FB event. If you don’t, you’ll find that when you try to access the webinar on Tuesday night you’ll be told that the event has already happened (because the initial registration incorrectly had the event happening on 14 December). If you need any further clarification, please message me.

06.01.2022 People have been asking about what they can do about property preparation if they own a holiday home or the like, and it requires them to travel to get there. There are rules and restrictions relating to whether you are in metropolitan Melbourne or in regional Victoria. The DHHS website that covers it all can be found at www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/emergencies-and-coronavirus-covi

05.01.2022 A terrific article on the ABC website about preparing your brain for bushfires. Some great insight and some good advice! https://www.abc.net.au//how-to-plan-and-prepare-y/12796906

05.01.2022 Do you know how to identify your bushfire risk? Do you know what you should take with you when you leave home? How about how to stay safe while travelling? And most importantly, how to survive if you are caught in a fire? CFA has released another E-learning course that focuses on safe travelling this Summer, and is aimed at everyone who travels through high-risk fire areas. The course is similar in length to the E-learning module centred on those who care for the more... vulnerable members of our community (around 45-50 minutes). The course can be found at https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/bushfire-safety-for-workers While the title implies the course is solely for workers, it really is relevant to everyone.
