24.01.2022 A thought provoking read by Lidia Thorpe: "It is time for the government to listen to our people. The progressive movement, too, needs to champion First Nations voices as we come together to fight for a future that cares for community and Country for social services that genuinely support all of us, for truly universal health and education, for climate justice." Can't wait for Lidia to be sworn in as Victoria's first Aboriginal Senator!... https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au//afte/160164720010498
24.01.2022 A win for people power, for human rights and for people in detention. Coalition bill to deny people access to mobile phones looks set to be voted down.
24.01.2022 Here’s a wrap from the last month...
21.01.2022 Here’s one for the footy fans, thanks to Sammy J and the wonderfully creative folks at Westgarth Primary School Events. Which local legend will claim bragging rights in this year’s Rona version of the handball comp? Can Richo, not known for his accuracy, do it for the Tigers? Nothing usual about this year’s AFL season. Who would have dreamed of two Victorian teams playing a night grand final in Brisbane?! Seems a bit strange to have a public holiday, but we could all do with ...a day off - enjoy! https://video.link/w/Wzdpb
19.01.2022 Thanks Michael for your support! I've always been a union member and a believer in collective action for worker's rights and conditions. I'm currently with the CPSU. I have signed the Victorian Trades Hall Council pledge not to privatise council services. ... Greens Councillors in Darebin have been leading the way in retaining staff during the COVID pandemic. Looking ahead, we have an opportunity to drive local recovery with high quality and sustainable services, such as aged care, maternal and child health, libraries, pools and community services.
17.01.2022 I'm proud of Darebin Council's leadership as the first Government to declare a Climate Emergency in 2016. 1,700 governments have followed our lead, this represents around 1 billion people! It was a bold move to take the lead especially with lack of meaningful action by Federal and State Governments. It changed the way decisions are made at the council and led to tangible benefits and savings for Darebin residents including - Interest-free loans for renewable energy... Collection of household organic waste Improved efficiency of council facilities Now more than ever it's time to do all we can to tackle the climate emergency. In the next term of council I want to see - 1.5 million native trees and grasses planted Massive investment in sustainable transport A scaling up of our investment in renewables A local government with vision and leadership can have an international impact AND serve the community locally. I’m looking forward to discussing these issues and more at the Darebin Council Election - Climate and Democracy Candidates Forum on Thursday 1 October, hosted by Darebin Community Network. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/darebin-council-election-ca
17.01.2022 The Greens and I will always stand up for more and better public housing. Everyone deserves a place to call home. - Tom Alle elezioni comunali di Darebin io voto per i Verdi e do la mia preferenza No. 1 a Tom Hannan, perchè assicurerà che le case popolari siano salvaguardate ed espanse nel futuro pulito e giusto di Darebin. I vote Greens for the Darebin Council Elections and give my No. 1 preference to Tom Hannan, as he'll make sure that public housing will be safeguarded ...and expanded in a clean and caring Darebin future. - Luciano Furfaro Darebin Community Friends of Public Housing https://www.facebook.com/groups/186430805370707/
16.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC week everyone! The theme this year is ‘Always was, always will be’, an important reminder that sovereignty has never been ceded and that First Nations people have deep and ongoing connections with this land. Here is a small measure which will hopefully help to raise awareness of the many First Nations countries across Australia.... Next time you’re ordering IKEA deliveries or Christmas presents, use the available fields to say: Name Traditional place name (e.g., Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country for Darebin) Suburb / Town Post Code https://mobile.abc.net.au//australia-post-agrees-/12872484
16.01.2022 Very excited about the massive opportunities here to build communities, promote local jobs and protect the environment! A good example is the Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre (NARC), which has reached the end of its economic life and is need of renewal. The Greens have committed to rebuild as an inclusive and sustainable, 6 green star rated centre for the next 50 years. This will create jobs in the construction phase and ongoing operations. It will help to bring down Darebin's greenhouse gas emissions. And in the reality of hotter summers, it will provide an essential destination for health, wellbeing and leisure.
15.01.2022 Once again, vulnerable people have been moved on by the Fed Gov without explanation or compassion. Darebin Council will continue to advocate to welcome refugees into our community and free them from ongoing detention.
15.01.2022 Why check the news, when there’s a noticeboard next door?! This is a great neighbourly service to turn the scary numbers into a discussion point for the community. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike last week and he could rival Brett Sutton for his knowledge of the trends. He said something about a regular mid week dip in numbers, but don’t quote me on that!
13.01.2022 What could be more consultative than consulting about how to consult?! It’s a serious question these days, with no local newspaper in Darebin and people more likely to check their Facebook / Insta feed than their letterbox for news. What would you want to have a say about, and how would like to hear about things?... Share your thoughts in person this Saturday at All Nations Park, or via the online survey.
11.01.2022 "I’ll be fighting for strong action on the climate crisis, to tackle the economic inequality in this system that is leaving more and more people behind and for a Treaty, so we can finally have justice for Aboriginal people in this country, and move forward together as a stronger Nation." - Senator Lidia Thorpe Powerful words from a powerful woman . So proud of the former Northcote MP Lidia Thorpe and can’t wait to see what happens next!
10.01.2022 Don’t leave your run too late! Vote 1 Tom Hannan and get your ballot paper in the post box by 6pm today.
10.01.2022 Tonight, I’ll be watching ... COVIDOL: MUSIC PANDEMIC - a documentary that covers the last five years of Westgarth Idol. Released on October 3rd to coincide with the now-cancelled date for Westgarth Idol 2020, the aim is to raise as much money as possible for Westgarth Primary School. Here is the trailer:... https://www.facebook.com/westgarthidol/videos/658019574924574/?vh=e&extid=0 This truly unique event is a wonderful part of our school community - lots of fun, some memorable and irreverent acts, and some very talented artists (although sadly none of them in my boy band). A big shout out to Jonny and Caroline Clow and everyone who has put so much work into the movie and the event over the years. You can order your copy here (warning, contains some course language - probably not one for the younger kids): https://covidol.floktu.com Make it a big night in with specials from local legends: Purple Emerald and Hotel Jesus.
09.01.2022 What I believe we can achieve for Darebin South Ward
06.01.2022 Check out the new book and seed library at Jika Jika Community Centre . What a great way to share with neighbours! Thanks very much to Gina and the team for a wonderful end of year bbq last week. Jika jika has been at the heart of the Northcote community for decades, with activities from babies up to grandparents. The team has worked tirelessly to get up and going again after the Covid lockdown, and the centre is looking great with some recent improvements to the offices, kitchen and halls.
05.01.2022 Want to go for a ride? The Greens are working to make it easier and safer to walk, ride and roll around Darebin.
05.01.2022 LET'S TALK! Great to see so many people attending the Darebin Council Election Council Forum last night and thanks to Darebin Community Network and the other candidates for the opportunity to share our ideas. We have a really engaged community in Northcote and it's inspiring to see people getting involved in local and global issues. On the flip side, it's sad to see there's been some offensive and misogynistic graffiti on another candidate's posters. This kind of rubbish... has no place in our society. Let's keep it respectful! I would love to hear what you're passionate about and tell you more about my priorities for Darebin. Come along (online) for an informal lunch time chat. You might even meet a few new neighbours! We will be joined by current Councillor for Rucker Ward, Trent McCarthy. Please see the link below and RSVP to receive the link to join. https://victoria.greens.org.au/dare_ce_20201005
04.01.2022 Here we go again Be safe everyone, and wishing for a healthy and happy new year!
03.01.2022 This is amazing news! It’s vindication to the men who have shown enduring courage and hope in the face of injustice. And it’s a great achievement for the many ordinary people and community advocates, including Darebin Council who have kept up the pressure. ... Still many more to be released though, and much work to be done to ensure all people seeking protection in Australia have access to basic safety, income and services while awaiting resolution of their cases.
02.01.2022 After all the intensity, it’s great to have a break from it all and unwind with a good book. Thanks to everyone for their support, and to the other candidates in South Ward for their good will throughout the campaign. It’s going to be another week or more until we get the results of the Darebin Council election - watch this space...
01.01.2022 Loving the picnic weather this weekend. Yay All Nations Park people for socialising safely, and nice to get a positive wrap from Chief Health Officer, Brett Sutton! If you'd like to socialise online and discuss issues local and global, come along for an informal lunch time chat on Monday 5 October. Please see the link below and RSVP to receive the link to join.... https://victoria.greens.org.au/dare_ce_20201005 See more
01.01.2022 One thing that's stood out to me as truly remarkable this year is the way our local food businesses have stepped up to the challenge time and time again. In the very first days of lockdown 1.0, Hiruni Peiris from Northcote Bakeshop had already set up a Facebook group (Northcote, Thornbury & Fairfield Takeaway) for locals and food traders to connect - and the sense of community that's emerged has been incredible. We've seen people like the team at Zsa's Bar Bistro Deli who wer...e just brave and crazy enough to open a restaurant in the middle of a city wide lockdown, and have made it work in style. There have been businesses like Estelle who have pivoted to crafting "finish at home" restaurant quality meals, to places like Northside Wines developing a spin off wine tasting at home business. And of course I couldn't forget the stalwart Phil at Purple Emerald always ready with a cocktail at the hour of need. In saying that, I don't want to minimise the huge challenges this year has thrown at small businesses. I know that many have had to make gut wrenching decisions to reduce hours, postpose new projects, and stand staff down. But through it all, our local traders have innovated, pivoted, kept people in work, and kept us all well fed. In the long, interminable, interchangeable weeks of lockdown, a special takeaway dinner or sneaky mid morning snack has has given my family and I a bright spot of cheer, a sense of normality, or just the sugar hit needed to keep ploughing through home schooling. As a Councillor it would be my absolute privilege to do the most to support these businesses and our community in turn.
