22.01.2022 The TMA have had their first Bunnings Sausage Sizzle today (Sunday) and raised some much needed money to go toward building a Museum/Interpretive Centre for the area. Our next one is in February, (we'll let you know when its on.) As many people said to us today, 'its so good to have a sausage sizzle again.'... Of course we couldn't have done it without the help of the wonderful guys n gals from Rotary and Bunnings of Taylors Beach.

21.01.2022 As a follow up to a previous post about TMA member Warwick Mathieson finding a long sought after cemetery at Gan Gan. Local historian Denise Gaudion has supplied some cuttings of a couple of revealing and entertaining columns from the archives of the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners's Advocate from 1953. Below is a photo of one of the articles and to make life easier we've typed up the article for clearer reading. -----------------------------------------------------------...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Here is the second article about Gan Gan army camp with reference to the cemetery in the `Scrub', from the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miner's Advocate Newspaper, this time from February 1951. Many thanks to our friend, Tanilba Bay historian Denise Gaudion who passed on these wonderful articles from the archives of the National Library of Australia. Below are the photos of the articles and we've transcribed them for clearer reading. -----------------------------------------...Continue reading

12.01.2022 TMA member Warwick Mathieson may have found an old cemetery near the old Gan Gan Army Camp over the Christmas break. During WW2, Warwicks father served for a time at Port Stephens and told six year old Warwick about a cemetery in the bush with many Gymea Lilies about it. Over the years, Warwick has looked about for this cemetary without success. Until now. While looking at an old Defence survey map on display at the TMA Pop Up Museum at d'Albora Marina, he took note of a cem...etery marked in the area his father had described. This week, he set off to the location marked on the map and found under the dense scrub and Gymea Lilies, an area marked by large rocks placed on top of each other in corner formations. If you know of the old cemetery the TMA would love to hear from you. #portstephens #ganganarmycamp

09.01.2022 Our first Tomaree Museum Pop-Up Museum has wound up! From comments to members and in our guest book its clear there is significant interest in building a permanent Museum and interpretive Centre for the area. All of the comments were encouraging and the constructive criticisms are appreciated and inform us on where we can improve. Here's a small selection of some of those comments;... "Great display, lots of potential. Hope a permanent home is found soon." "Very interesting. Video speakers too low. Hope you find a good site soon. More info on local slides dates, names." "Terrific! Great cross-section of historic memorabilia and artifacts." "Fabulous! I learned so much about this beautiful place. Love the idea of creating a permanent space/museum." "Oyster fishing area lack signage for each object eg pulleys etc. How does a pulley work? Explain for children." "Amazing display of Port Stephens history. I was very interested in the photo display of the Gould’s Petrel. Also of interest were all the artefacts and old photos." "Fascinating history of shipwrecks but the most interesting things were related to the sites around Port Stephens. It was lovely to read the remarkable history of the area and look forward to being able to see more at a permanent exhibition." "Great display very informative. Most pleasant hosts and old enough to be part of museum."

09.01.2022 This is a short video of rare footage from 1942/43 of amphibious training exercises at Shoal Bay and the base at Fly Point where Neil Carroll Park, the Community Arts Centre, the Fly Point Native Gardens and Niogka Reserve is today. During WW2, Port Stephens was home to 2,000 Australian and over 20,000 US troops at HMAS Assault, a Joint overseas operational training school (Joots).... In early 1942, British Malaya and Singapore had fallen and US Forces had retreated from the Philippines. The path was clear for Japan to invade Australia. The areas local population at the time was around 450 and access to the area was available by sea or sandy tracks. There was no piped water, electricity or telephone. The building of the base bought all of those things to the southern part of Port Stephens. There was even discussion at the time, due to the immense secrecy involved with the base, to relocate the entire local population, but that idea was deemed ethically wrong and politically unpopular. #portstephens #Museum #WW2 #Worldwar2 #Tomaree #History #local #HMASAssault #ShoalBay #Flypoint #training #amphibious #NelsonBay #RAN #USMarines #HMASWestralia #GenMacArthur #JohnCurtin #GanGanArmyCamp #AustralianArmy #RAAF

04.01.2022 As part of the Pop-Up Museum at D'Albora Marina in December/January the TMA, here's a video of the fun day we had collecting and moving the items to its temporary home at Bobs Farm. These artefacts donated by the pioneering families of the area made up the collection of the original museum in Nelson Bay back in the late 60's and early 70's in Donald Street. The founding members of the Port Stephens Historical Society including Tony and Ann Trienen, Bernie Butler, Joy and Arthur Renforth, Thelma and Harold Smith, Norman Beaton, Peace Clayton, Atholene and Dan Carroll and Owen Fleming must be warmly thanked for their tireless efforts to preserve as much of our local history as they did, fifty years ago.#Tomaree #Museum #local #history #collection #NelsonBay #PortStephens
