19.01.2022 I have been fortunate enough to be a part of both the AFL blind and wheelchair teams at Hawthorn Football Club the last few seasons as a volunteer. From assisting as a coach on the sidelines back in 2019, to being a part of last weeks season launch, it has been great to meet so many of the players on each team respectively. With both seasons now underway, I reflected on my thoughts around what inclusion means to me. This interview was conducted prior to our round 14 game Vs... Essendon Football Club in season 2020. With our blind team winning the premiership last year, let’s hope they can go back to back this year under Jack Frost guidance!! #football #sport #volunteer https://www.linkedin.com//tom-mitchell-8768481a9_football-
10.01.2022 Finals day for the VWFL. It wasn’t our year this year Hawthorn Football Club but the team did very well to make the semi’s. Special mention to Jaylen for making the team of the year! His skills reminded me of Cyril Rioli
05.01.2022 Tonight a dream will become a reality for many aspiring footballers around the country as they hope to make their way on to an AFL list. Walking in to an AFL environment can be quite intimidating as you are surrounded by players you have idolised for years. For me, it was the likes of Adam Goodes and Jude Bolton when I arrived at the Sydney Swans. If I was speaking to my younger self or could provide advice to any young player entering the AFL system I would say:... 1. Have a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn: This is the quickest way to earn the respect of your team mates. Do more than what is expected of you. 2. Be yourself: Football clubs are accepting environments and you don’t have to be someone or something that you’re not. Whether you are a shy guy, a funny guy or anything else, you will be embraced for who you are. 3. Enjoy the moment: You are only drafted once and need to recognise and acknowledge the hard work it has taken to get to this point. Make sure you personally thank everyone who has made a significant impact in helping you get to where you are. Well done to all players that did get drafted tonight. And for those that didn’t, the journey isn’t over if you don’t want it to be! #football #leadership #team
