06.01.2022 5 TIPS FOR SECURING A JOB WHEN YOU GRADUATE . ... and most of these begin while you’re still studying . 1. Get as much practical experience as you can. Put your hand up for summer internships, work experience opportunities, try to get a part time job and where possible, try to get one in the industry you’re interested in joining (e.g if you’re studying to be a Psychologist - be proactive and email your resume and cover letter to local clinics and offer your services as a... receptionist. . 2. Volunteer. Often. The job industry is very competitive and most of the people you are competing against will have the same skills and education as you. What will set you apart is the extra-curricular activities you have done and things that will show that you are a good human and a team player. There are SO many opportunities at Tommy More to get involved in things from volunteering at Ronald McDonald House, stepping your for Breast Cancer, Participating in the Shave for a Cure, getting involved in team sports - just to make a few. . 3. Take up additional training opportunities whenever you can. As with 2 it’s all the extra stuff that can help give you bonus points. Just this Semester, we have already had a Leadership Training Course and an Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Workshop. These are SO valuable and should be included on your CV. . 4. Try to network in your industry. At Tommy we have Bright Breakfasts with people in your industry (next week is about Careers in Healthcare) and also 1:1 mentoring with our fabulous alumni too. Sometimes knowing tips and tricks about your specific industry can make ALL the difference. . 5. Prepare a first class application and make sure you look the part for your interview too! . During Careers Week last week we had the pleasure of inviting Gemma Capper from St Vincent de Paul to talk about how to dress for interviews and find clothes that fit well, we conducted lunchtime sessions on LinkedIn and personal branding, using apps like Google Drive and Canva, and held a Bright Breakfast with tips on applying for jobs and graduate programs. . Go forth Tommy More students! You’ve got this!. . Alumni - have we missed any tips? See more
06.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK 2020 . This week at Tommy More we are celebrating the contribution, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Here are some pics from our events last year . We started the week last night with a valuable workshop from presenter, Danny Ford.... . Tonight we will hear from some of our students first hand in a Tell Me More Seminar, followed by a Movie Night, Arts night and Quiz Night. . We are fiercely proud of our Indigenous students and so grateful we have the opportunity to learn, listen and and celebrate their culture, at all times, but particularly during the Tommy NAIDOC week. . P.S. We know NAIDOC week is not officially until November, but we always hold it in August so it occurs during Term Time when all students are on campus. @ St Thomas More Residential College See more
