16.01.2022 You'll often hear the old saying "it's not called catching, it's called fishing"- which could not be anymore true. There's honestly something exhilarating about setting out to target a particular species, all the crucial and nessecary organisation that is required, and devoting hours- if not days, to land that one sought-after fish. This is what I love about this sport; the fact that you're able to set personal challenges and accomplishments to your capabilities. Following on... from this, I have recently introduced a few good mates to the idea of fishing for mulloway- AKA, the "Mulloway Bug". While I have personally caught fish throughout this waterway previously, we aimed to land a fish collaboratively together, as mates- as a challenge we had set for ourselves, with minimal excuses to pause or quit during search. This led to many sleepless nights- witnessing sundown and sunrise, countless missed fish of all sizes, including possible 'Personal Bests', and also- most importantly; a valid reasoning to all stay connected with each other, as the harsh realities of work life finally set in for each of us. Learning and conversing with one and other soon allowed us to draw and infer patterns of the common bite times regarding these fish- which we utilised to our advantage in this aspect of the chase. Finally, after hours, upon hours of patiently waiting in silence in the darkness of the night, it finally happened for us. We had conquered what we set out to accomplish. While, on this particular occasion, not all of us were present, this fish represented something only some could dream of- the invigorating feeling of accomplishment & fulfillment. Though, these fish grow much, much larger than this particular fish pictured, it represented a whole lot more to each and every one of us who devoted their time to witnessing such a breathtaking and magnificent fish in the flesh. You can see the sheer excitement & adrenaline rush of us, judging by the quality of the image- not realising every photo was out of focus, eagerly wanting to release this fish, unharmed. The chase will not stop- and most probably never will, due to the addictive & intriguing nature of these fish.
