16.01.2022 . October is a month that reminds us to reflect and raise awareness of mental health and well-being. Following the blue tree that Council has painted in Lions Park in support of the Blue Tree Project, an initiative that aims to encourage dialogue around mental health concerns, Tondoon Botanic Gardens has painted a blue tree in the Arboretum Lawn. White rocks have been placed beside the tree and pens a...re provided. Please write your mental health message on a rock and place it at the foot of the tree. Remember to leave the pen for the next caring person. Your message could be as simple as It’s okay to not be okay; You are not alone; It’s okay to need help; Don’t keep it all bottled up; We are all in this together. that getting your hands dirty has benefits! While it may be off-putting for some to get their hands dirty due to the visual and associated smells, it has been proven that soil can create similar effects on a person’s brain as antidepressants. This is because healthy soils contain various ‘good bacteria’ that can alter parts of the brain and promote positive feelings. It has been demonstrated that the bacteria can trigger neurons that stimulate the creation of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood in humans. Therefore, the more we interact with soil as part of our gardening activities, the more potential benefits can be gained.
