23.01.2022 Happy Tongan Language Week New Zealand. It was an honour to be a guest at the Radio PMN (531pi) celebration in 2018. It was fun to be a judge for their radio personalities' spelling test. Have a go and see if they spelt these Tongan words correctly. Don't forget the toloi (macron) and the fakau'a (glottal stop) when you spell in Tongan. Ml.

22.01.2022 It's important to stay at home to keep safe from the coronavirus. Take care.

21.01.2022 31 August 2020 Important Notice from the Department of Education: Due to advice from NSW Health on Coronavirus (Covid-19), there will be No Face to Face Classes for all Community Languages Schools Programs, effective from today. 14.01.2022 "'Anga'angamofai" is a type of shark ('anga) whose head is like that of a stingray (fai). It is also a Tongan proverb meaning; "Ko ha taha 'oku ta'epau hono 'u...lungaanga´" - a person of uncertain or dubious character. Don't you just love our Tongan language! Our shark population has fallen rapidly and some have been driven to extinction. I wonder if our 'anga'angamofai sharks are still around? I'm looking at this amazing shark ray and wonder if this is our 'anga'angamofai? We used to refer to sharks as our "social partners" of higher rank, as sacred gods (Taufatahi - Taufa'hau) and as the lover "Hina" (and Sinilau). Science is catching up with our indigenous and cultural knowledge and is beginning to understand our relationship of awe and respect rather than one of fear and loathing. See more

14.01.2022 Have a go at this exercise in Tongan spelling. The correction will be provided later. Cheers!

09.01.2022 "Tapu mo e kelekele 'eiki 'o e kakai 'Apolisinale´, ko e kakai tupu'a 'o e fonua´ ni." "We acknowledge the regal (sacred) land of the Aboriginal people, the first peoples of this land." We, too, in our Tongan custom pay our respects and acknowledge the land of the people, as part of the prelude to our speeches. Whether this is in the remotest islands of Tonga or the big cities of the world, we still acknowledge the land and her people, the traditional owners/custodians of the land. Australian Acknowledgment: I would like to begin by acknowledging the Dharawal people, Traditional Custodians of the land on which we meet today, and pay my respects to their Elders past and present. I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today." Always Was, Always Will Be! Happy NAIDOC Week!

01.01.2022 One can never be too careful when you speak in Tongan. When you misuse or mispronounce a word, it's often a swear word. . . P.S. Some have asked for examples of the Perfect Tense so here are some: 1. Kuo´ u kai. I have eaten.... 2. Kuo´ u 'alu ki kolo. I have gone to town. 3. Kuo´ u hiva e Fasi Fakafonua´. I've sung the National Anthem. See more
