21.01.2022 Are you a scarf wearer? It might seem like an odd question now that winter is well and truly over and the warmer weather is here...but that doesn’t mean we won’t have a few more cold days ahead of us. This is especially true if you’re working from home or in an office that’s quite cold! One of our favourite tips to keep warm is to wear a scarf ... In Chinese medicine, the back of the neck, base of the skull and back of the shoulders are important areas keep covered to help avoid colds and flus. 20.01.2022 BACK PROBLEMS? This is one of our favourite tips to help reduce back pain. Essentially, it encourages you to stand upright (imagine a vertical line drawn from your ear through the tip of your shoulder, hip socket, knee joint and to the base of your foot). When we’re in this position, no ‘work’ is required to hold us in place. However, when we have poor posture / hunch our shoulders / etc, extra work is required to hold parts in place that aren’t stacked up vertically. That ex...tra work is performed by your muscles and tendons, and leads them to eventually become sore, tense and malfunction. Give this technique a try to help you stand straight, 'stack up' and reduce back pain STEP 1. BE PROUD AND OPEN YOUR CHEST Firstly, take a deep breath, note how you can open your chest. Your shoulders should be more in line with your spine now. STEP 2. PLACE YOUR EARS ABOVE YOUR SHOULDERS Then, bring your head back, placing your ears vertically above your shoulders. Also make sure your chin is not sticking out. STEP 3. HOLD YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK To make it easier to keep the above posture, clasp your hands together and place them gently below your lower back. You might find the above difficult to hold or it may feel unnatural. But the more you do it, the easier it’ll get. It’s all about changing muscle memory. The actions are small and inconspicuous, so you can do them anywhere, anytime. At your desk, waiting for a bus, at a supermarket checkout or when giving a work presentation. Of course, this is just one technique. If back pain is an issue for you, we highly recommend booking an appointment with our massage therapist, Dane, as he can assess the cause of the pain and help prevent ongoing or future issues.

15.01.2022 PULSE DIAGNOSIS Pulse diagnosis is one of the major forms of assessment in traditional Chinese medicine. Peter uses pulse diagnosis with his clients to help inform his treatments. Through palpating the pulse on both wrists, a trained professional can gather a great amount of detail. ... 08.01.2022 5 Element Theory! Have you heard about it before? According to ancient Chinese wisdom, all things in the natural world are made up of five elements fire, earth, metal, water and wood. In the body, these elements correlate to organ pairs: Heart and Small Intestine (fire ), Spleen and Stomach (earth ), Lungs and Large Intestine (metal ), Kidney and Bladder (water ) and Liver and Gallbladder (wood ). ... The organs also correlate to different functions of the body. These organs also have their meridians (pathways) that usually circumnavigate the organ, connect to other structures of the body, and correlate to specific emotions and seasons. The most important part of the Five Element Theory within the body is that it understands the relationship between all of the organs and meridians, and the importance of them working in harmony. Chinese medicine and acupuncture work to re-establish the correct harmony between the organs and meridians, therefore restoring balance to the system. If you’re fascinated by this, ask our acupuncturist Peter or book an appointment here https://tonikahealth.cliniko.com/bookings

04.01.2022 Did you know that acupuncture is a registered profession in Australia? Acupuncturists just like medical doctors, physios and osteopaths are government accredited through the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (AHPRA) and must undergo a minimum of 4 years study to hold a tertiary degree in Traditional Chinese medicine. Fun fact Australia is one of only a few places in the western world where acupuncture requires a degree and is a registered health profession, and acupuncturists in Australia are some of the most highly qualified acupuncturists in the world!

04.01.2022 It’s officially Spring! We’ve all heard of ‘spring cleaning’ before and traditional Chinese medicine has similar beliefs about this time of year too. During spring, sprouts start to shoot, flowers begin to blossom and growth is all around us. TCM also sees spring as the time of new beginnings, expansion and growth. Spend some time this week thinking about (or better yet, writing down) everything that you want to let go of from the previous months anything that brings yo...u worry or stress or anger, fears that you have, anything that makes you feel emotionally drained. Letting go of these things creates space for you to welcome in exciting new things in your life. You might also like to think about what you want to focus on for the next few months what makes you feel expansive, what are your goals, what brings you joy.
