19.01.2022 TONY GOODWIN AND COMPANY offers a wide range of legal and notarial services. Most people know what legal services are but few have any idea what notarial services are or what is a notary public. I was granted my Faculty as a Notary Public for Queensland in 1994 by the Archbishop of Canterbury under the Seal of the Office of Faculties in England. I am a member of the Society of Notaries of Queensland.... What is a Notary Public? Generally speaking, a notary public may be described as an officer of the law appointed by the Court of Faculties whose public office and duty it is to draw, attest or certify under his official seal, for use anywhere in the world, deeds and other documents, including wills or other testamentary documents, conveyances of real and personal property and powers of attorney; to authenticate such documents under his signature and official seal in such a manner as to render them acceptable, as proof of the matters attested by him, to the judicial or other public authorities in the country where they are to be used, whether by means of issuing a notarial certificate as to the due execution of such documents or by drawing them in the form of public instruments; and to draw up protests or other formal papers relating to occurrences on the voyages of ships and their navigation as well as the carriage of cargo in ships N.P. Ready’s Brooke’s Notary (11th ed. 1992) p. 20. For example people working in Central Queensland on 457 Visas are sometimes involved in buying/selling property overseas. Most often they need to give a Power-Of-Attorney to an overseas resident to sign sale/purchase documents on their behalf. As a notary I am frequently asked to authenticate the signing of the Power-Of-Attorney for these purposes. My seal and signature are recognised by numerous embassies of foreign countries here in Australia as well as by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). This saves those people the expense of travel to their embassy in Sydney or Canberra. Sometimes an Apostille needs to be attached to the documentation. You should ask us about an Apostille. Other documents destined for overseas use need to be authenticated in a similar way. Charges for notarial services are made according to the time taken. Often 1/2 hour is sufficient. When making an appointment my staff will give you an estimate of costs. It is essential to bring Photographic ID current passport, driver’s licence, etc. I hope this helps. I look forward to hearing from you. Usually I can take an appointment on the same day of request, after hours if necessary. Please contact my office on (07) 4972 4100 or visit our website www.goodwinlawyers.com for further information/appointments.
