24.01.2022 LONG POST: This week I celebrate 10 years of running my own business. On June 21, 2010 I opened the doors for the first time. Although I had been working in the industry since 2002 (I am still training some of those original clients), I decided to take the giant step into running my own show. I would love to say that I have enjoyed every moment of it, but due to the dynamics of running your own business, that hasnt always been the case. Thankfully there have been way more up...s than downs. I am humbled that so many people have entrusted me to assist them with their goals over the years. Without their support and consistency I would not have made it this far. So many coaches/trainers come into this industry with the dream of working with elite athletes and maybe, eventually be employed by a major sporting team or organisation. I am fortunate that I have had the privilege to have worked with athletes that have been to world championships and have made it into national competitions such as the NRL and to be currently coaching dancers @qldballet and @queenslandballetacademy , however, athletes come and go. It is my regular clients, that I see consistently that I am most thankful for. I am hesitant to single anyone out but I want to make a special mention of Megan @0400m3gan , as she was the very first session on my opening day and she has continued to be the first session every week of every year. Her energy is infectious and is as keen as mustard to try new things. She is strong, resilient and like so many of my clients, she has donated her own time and knowledge into assisting me to develop Tony Lewis Strength and Conditioning into what it is today. She is a true representation of the loyal community that has formed around the facility and everything I have aimed for my business to be. Thank you Megan and everyone, heres to another 10.

23.01.2022 Many of us are now working from home. However, the majority can do their work on a computer. As the S&C Coach for @qldballet and @queenslandballetacademy I have been seeing the dancers confined to doing classes in kitchens, lounge rooms and balconies. These spaces are a fair bit different to what they usually work in. 22.01.2022 After spinal surgery late last year, 2020 hasnt made rehabilitation easy for @dylanjlackey Since getting back in the gym after the COVID lockdown, he has been progressing faster than I thought. He hasnt started doing any Back Squats as yet, but after his session this last week, I think he is ready.... I honestly believe that the use of #bfr has played a significant part in his fast progress. Here Dylan is Front Squatting 60kg with the cuffs at 140mmHg. 12.01.2022 It has been a little over two weeks since Caitlyn ruptured her ACL. The focus for that time has been to reduce inflammation and maintain range of motion as best as possible, along with some basic exercises; glute bridges, heel slides, straight leg lifts and single-leg balance. These were all performed within a pain-free range of motion. With the Physio on Tuesday, we formulated the next phase of her Pre-op training. Warm-up: Glute bridges x 12... Single leg glute bridges 2 x 6 per side Step Back with band 2 x 12 per side Wall Sit 2 x 30 seconds Standing knee extension with band 2 x 20 seconds Program Goblet Squats: you can see that she cannot fully extend her knee but her depth is damn good for this stage of the program. Unfortunately Facebook will only allow me to post one video but if you go to my Instagram page @tonylewispt you will see the videos for the following. Glute/Hamstring Bridge 2 up, 1 down: I did this one with her hence there is no video. Plus, no one wants to hear a grown man cry. Single leg sit to stand: due to the lack of knee, hip and foot stability, you will see in the video how difficult and frustrating this was for her. Single leg calf raises (to fatigue): if you look at both videos, the difference between the two legs is blatantly obvious. She was trying to fully extend her right knee. Again, everything was performed within a pain-free range of motion.

11.01.2022 Over the 8 years that my daughter has been involved in Club sport, I can count on one hand how many times I have missed seeing her play. Her love for Football (soccer) and in the last 4 years, Australian Rules Football, has been infectious and makes you want to be part of it. So, to see this image of her being carried from the field in the 2nd Quarter of the first official match of the season breaks my heart. To see her on the ground holding her knee and then seeing that look... on her face, only meant one thing, ACL Rupture. This was confirmed the following week by MRI. She has permitted me to share her journey back to playing the sport she loves, Aussie Rules. So, over the coming weeks and months, I will be posting some images of her pre-op and post-op training. I refuse to call it rehab because many of the exercises she will be performing should (in my opinion) be part of regular training. Most of the exercises she will do along the way, she was already doing in her private sessions with me. 09.01.2022 Public Health Alert Community members on Brisbanes southside are asked to remain alert but not alarmed as Queensland records three new cases of novel cor...onavirus (COVID-19). The first case is a 19-year-old woman who tested positive after travelling interstate last week. She is an employee at Parklands Christian College on Brisbanes southside. Queensland Health is working closely with the school which has temporarily closed until further notice. The second case is a 19-year-old female travel companion. Both cases travelled interstate together last week. It is believed they contracted the virus in Melbourne, Victoria. The third reported case is a known close contact, a 22-year-old woman, who tested positive later today. This individual is an employee of YMCA Chatswood Hills Outside School Hours Care. Queensland Health is working closely with the school and the care centre, both of which have temporarily closed until further notice. 08.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago I posted this video on my Instastory. It was a cold and wet Saturday morning, so I was not able to get out for my usual ride. I decided to get on the stationary bike and put on my Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) cuffs as part of my warm-up before I did a resistance session. I know that when I wear them, I tend to warm up quickly. Anyway, it got me thinking if there are any other benefits to wearing them on the bike other than getting warm on a cold mornin...g. So, I let my fingers do the walking and found several articles and research papers. A couple of them caught my eye (see them below). I am not going to explain the findings of each, but I will give you the simple answer; YES, there is more benefits to wearing BFR cuffs when cycling (at low intensity) than just warming up. As I mentioned earlier, I like to head out for a ride on the weekends and have added the following protocol into my (secret) training: The session begins with a 5-minute warm-up. The training session consists of 2 sets of 5 repetitions. Each rep is 2mins and interspersed with 1min passive rest. The rest interval between the sets is 5mins (3mins active and 2mins passive) The cuff pressure is @140mmHg I did two sessions last week and it might be just in my head but I felt awesome on the bike over the weekend, but dont tell anyone

08.01.2022 Suns out , guns out ! Believe me, as a relatively puny human, the last thing I want to post is a Bicep pic. I have put this post up because I cannot remember the last time, I did Bicep Curls for reps. I have had elbow pain (Golfers Elbow) almost ever since I finished my dance career and Curls have been a no-go since then.... Over the years I have done rehab/prehab exercises so I can train pain free and only this year started performing these exercises using BFR (Blood Flow Restriction) Training. Using BFR, I believe, has led me too today. I can hear all the massive biceps owners out there saying, that’s not much weight and they are correct. The weight is approximately 30% of my (estimated) 1RM; which again, is not much. My aim is to do 2 sets x 30 reps. Today’s 2 sets x 20 reps is a little way off, but you must start somewhere. Interestingly, I listened to an article review on the #bfrradiopodcast this morning, on How to use BFR to maximise Bicep Hypertrophy. 08.01.2022 This exercise (Band Triceps Pushdown) is part of a little finisher I gave @isaakmclean from @qldballet the other day. The focus for Isaak has been shoulder stability, so the resistance needed to be one that didn’t cause him to compromise technique/form. However, I still wanted to cause some stress to the triceps, so I introduced him to my Blood Flow Restriction cuffs. 07.01.2022 LONG POST: Over the last few weeks I have attended @fusionsportinc #smartabase Human Performance Summit, @trainwithpush Velocity Based Training course with @danbakerstrength_ and @the_asca International Conference on Applied Strength and Conditioning . So today I thought it was time to get #backinthelab and put some of what I have learned into practice. Today I decided to find out what my Front Squat 1RM is, using #vbt . Without seeing my velocity, I probably would have stop...ped one set short of what I did. 03.01.2022 After undergoing Spinal surgery late last year, it is great to have @dylanjlackey back in the gym. At this relatively early stage of his recovery/rehab, we are avoiding any Axial load. Dylan has been doing primarily body weight exercises and we are now at a point in the process where I want to create some Metabolic stress in his legs. 03.01.2022 Hi All, First of all Dont Panic, as of yet I havent and I dont know of anyone that has contracted or been in contact with anyone having COVID-19. Unless you have been living under a rock over the past few weeks, I am sure you are aware of the signs and symptoms of COVID-19. Therefore, this message is not to inform you about what you should already know.... However, I do ask that you use COMMON SENSE during this uncertain time. If you have any cold or flu symptoms (no matter how minor) please do not try to come to training, as you will be asked to leave immediately. I have a vast array of clients of varying ages and health conditions, and I do not wish for them to be compromised in any way. So what might seem minor to you, could have an adverse effect on someone else. I have provided hand sanitizer (which I have had for ages.), however it is not going to last forever. So, I ask that you only use it if you have forgotten to bring your own. Tissues should only be used to wipe away tears of laughter or pain. If you have got to blow, then out you go! I am doing my best to keep the training area clean and sanitary but you can assist me by wiping up any DNA (sweat etc) you leave behind. If we all consider the knock-on effect of our actions, then hopefully we can hold COVID-19 at bay. Stay smart, stay healthy.
