25.01.2022 Great to see two new businesses in Gawler's main street - Gawler Smoothie Juice Bar and gift store Thirteen22 are doing well. Given the uncertain economic times, opening a new business is both hard work and a leap in faith. So if you are feeling the squeeze and need to hydrate check out the range at the Gawler Smoothie Juice Bar, and if you need a quality Australian gift take a look at Thirteen22.... Congrats to owners. 25.01.2022 Tradies operating in the Gawler and Barossa area have taken their fight against the privatisation of the DPTI maintenance program to state parliament. These small businesses work hard to look after our local public assets and will now become answerable to a multinational company. They are concerned the privatisation proposal will result in reducing their livelihoods and service.... 23.01.2022 The recent rains were most welcome but created a great deal of work around the home. So on Friday night and Saturday night I had to tackle head on, some of tasks around the home before they got completely out of control. Planted a lawn a few months ago and I think I have created a monster.... if It grows so quickly, that I have to mow it weekly. Well two weeks passed I paid for it - had to mow it twice as my poor mower (and me) couldn't cope in a single cut.... Then I had to tackle this noxious weed - don't know what it is called or how to stop it from growing, so I spent some time pulling it out by hand. If you know what it is, and how to control it, please let me know. And don't get me started on the caltrop .... 17.01.2022 Yesterday at the Barossa Farmers Market I learnt a number of things from the various stallholders - one of the great things about the markets is you get an opportunity to find out the source of the foods and produce you are buying - simple things like the way to cook different types of eggs. There is a dad joke in that comment but I will refrain from making it ! The other thing I learnt, was that there was an error in my market post last week.... so I have decided to re-post ...the video minus the mistake - sorry ! And thanks for the kind way that my error was pointed out to me. 16.01.2022 The State of South Australia is in "lock down" for the next six days. Except for essential workers/services, people are asked to not leave their homes. Up to date information can be found at www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/response... As a result, my Electorate Office will be closed for the next six days (re-open 9 am Wednesday 25th November) unless circumstances change once again. I'm really sorry about closing down, but like every other citizen I must obey the law. This is a difficult time for all of us, and much more difficult for some, so if we are courteous, kind and respectful to each other, we will survive it. 05.01.2022 VALE JOHN BARNET I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of my friend (and a massive friend of Gawler) John Barnet, former managing editor and part owner of the The Bunyip Newspaper. It has been the heart and soul of the Gawler Community; and the Barnet family a key part of that history. After 140 years in the ownership of the Barnet family, the current owners, the Taylor Group of the Riverland purchased it in 2003. While John no longer lived in Gawler his heart still was and he visited the town on a very regular basis to catch up with friends and the gos about the town. John was a very decent man and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the Gawler community. Sincere condolences to his wife Rosemary and their children, and to Paul and Anthony and their families.
05.01.2022 NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In recent months have been fortunate to start learning about the history of the Indigenous people and their connection to the land in the Barossa Valley. The Peramangk and Ngadjuri people once lived across parts of the Barossa Valley, which was also a meeting place between north and south for Aboriginal people to come and trade. ... It is crucial we find out more about both the Indigenous history of the region in order to better honour their traditions and understand their legacy. Unfortunately, much of what we know about the First Nations people who once lived here has been lost to time, so it is of great importance that we speak with people who have some connection to that history. Last week I made a public call for anyone to contact me with information about the local history. Thanks to those people who have responded. NAIDOC Week is an invitation to gain a greater understanding of the role Indigenous Australians have played in building and shaping the nation that we all call home today. Aboriginal culture is as important today as it was 65,000 years ago Indigenous Australians are spiritually and culturally connected to this country and continue to regain and strengthen our culture through language and an exploration of our shared history. In gaining a better understanding of the indigenous history of the Barossa in no way diminishes the rich European (German) history of the area. I wish you well in your NAIDOC Week celebrations, and hope take a moment to reflect and understand our nation’s shared history Kyam Maher MLC, Krondorf Creek Farm Barossa, Krondorf, Peter Malinauskas, South Australian Labor, National NAIDOC, SA NAIDOC WEEK EVENTS, Barossa BUZZ, Peramangk Country, Ngadjuri people, Reconciliation South Australia, The Leader Newspaper - Barossa Valley, The Bunyip Newspaper, Angaston Heritage

01.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who stopped to say hello. Time now to pop into the The Barossa Co-op cafe for a coffee to recharge. The top three issues addressed with me today were: 1) the Nuriootpa pool; 2) water security; and... 3) a Barossa hospital. 01.01.2022 Sadly, my first setback in 7 weeks today in my goal of achieving a PB at the Gawler parkrun by the end of February. My time blew out from 25:11 to 25:33. While it was quite warm this morning its no excuse, as young Max Grivell demonstrated. He achieve line honors and a PB. ... Well done Max. And young Aaron Degreff beat me this week. Need to train harder this week and redeem myself next Saturday. Thanks for the volunteers for making the event happen. Remember, parkrun Australia is a FREE family friendly event open to all ages and levels of fitness. Better fitness and friendships are the goal.
