25.01.2022 WIP. Busy working on a couple of commissions. Meet Tadpole the retired thoroughbred. Showing the very early stages. The underpainting and first coat. A long way too go. Oil on canvas

20.01.2022 Snow Leopard. A follow up from some recent sketches I posted. Such an enjoyable big cat to paint. Oil on canvas 16x12 in

18.01.2022 An oldie but a goody (I hope). Painted back in the mid nineties. One of my first pieces were I tried to evoke some emotion. Rather than just a bird on a branch!

18.01.2022 Something a little different for me . A Merino Ram. Oil on canvas 8x14 in. I pass this fellow most days as I drive into our local town. It was only a matter of time till I put him onto canvas. Busy doing a larger more elaborate piece of himATM.

17.01.2022 Amazonia. Green crowned Brilliant. Finally an image I feel is akin to the finished painting. Oil on canvas. 1.2 x1.2 metres . #hyperrealism #hyperrealisme #hummingbird #birdart #birdartist #realism

16.01.2022 I’ve never painted an Australian Sea Lion before. I was quite happy with this little study. From my visit to Kangaroo Island . Oil on canvas 12x16.

14.01.2022 Day two of my 10 day challenge. A little study from Grassfinches in Australia . Three Double-barred Finches preening themselves in the early morning light. Oil on canvas 16 x9in.

13.01.2022 David and Rosemary from Yea Garden club. Enjoying the gallery. And there purchase of this Rainbow Beeater study. Lovely people I’m glad it has a good home.

13.01.2022 Palm Cockatoos are always fun to paint. How can you not love their personalities and that ridiculous funky crest of theirs. Taken from my time with wild birds at Iron Range a few years ago.Oil on canvas 16x12 in. Image may contain: bird

13.01.2022 Another old piece Ive been busy resurrection. A female Sumatran Tiger. Oil on canvas. I think this will look good in a nice dark frame.

12.01.2022 Day 5 of my 10 day challenge. A selection of sketches from Grassfinches in Australia. An Important element of the book was giving readers the ability to sex birds. Some of the Grassfinches are sexed more on structural lines than plumage diffferances. This presented its own unique challenges.

09.01.2022 The adorable little Double-barred Finch. The species plate from Grassfinches in Australia oil on canvas. #australianfinches #birdartwork #birdartists #birdarts

09.01.2022 Unusually for me this Lion study was started and finished in one sitting! I prefer to work in thin glazes, one on top of the other. Then finishing with more opaque over painting. This often involves many sittings. For those interested this painting took 3 hours and 10 minutes. Minus one short coffee break. It’s beneficial to sometimes put yourself out of your comfort zone!oil on canvas 15 x11 inches

08.01.2022 Painting 3 of my 10 day challenge. Another piece from Grassfinches in Australia . Again the adorable Double-Barred Finch. This time the species plate from the book

08.01.2022 Since my last post I have moved my studio from the mountains of Sawmill Settlement to the rural/forested hills on the edge of Lake Eildon. Technically it’s only 20 minutes in the car. But bird wise it is rather different. Pelicans and White Breasted Sea Eagles are now seen most days. Here is a smallish 16x12 in painting of an Australian Pelican cruising the calm waters of the local boat launch. Oil on canvas

06.01.2022 A little study of one of our pesky fallow deer. They are beautiful. But not so much when they venture into our gardens and decimate our roses. Oil on canvas.

04.01.2022 Day four of my 10 day challenge. Another Grassfinch. But hey ,who doesn’t love Grassfinches. This time the very underrated Yellow- rumpled Munia. A challenging piece as the sexual differences are largely structural . Oil on canvas

01.01.2022 A skull study, that I’m sure will interest absolutely no one. I find them endlessly fascinating and are an important tool for what I do. Blue winged Shoveler.
