21.01.2022 My first Emerald Forest flower just poking its head through. Whilst not as showy as a lot of the other red, yellow or pink Heliconias, it's very unusual, with a flower the same shade of green as the leaves & stem. It also forms a lovely large clump which looks great from a landscaping perspective.
20.01.2022 Not everything in the garden is tropical. About 18 months ago I was given a couple of cuttings from a 100+ year old Sicilian Isabella Grape vine. I stuck them in the garden to see how they went. All started shooting, but only 1 survived. This is it a couple seasons later. Hoping for a couple small bunches to taste later this year..
20.01.2022 I had a large Heliconia clump that I was not sure of the identity of last year. I had to wait for it to flower, and it didn't. Well, fast forward 1 year, and my suspicions were correct, Black Cherry. I'm looking forward to putting a clump near the pool next Spring.
19.01.2022 Wandering around the back yard between showers this afternoon
19.01.2022 Continuing the task of reducing the mowing this long weekend. I had a couple cubic metres of sandy fill from under the concrete I broke up around the pool, just sitting in a pile near the bottom of the yard. Perfect for mixing with compost and the heavy soil I have here to make a new raised garden below the rainforest plot at the bottom of the yard. Quite a bit of work to dig out to a depth of 30cm, and mix the soils together, but it's worth it when I add a trailer load of manure & plant some Hot Rio Nights, Rauliniana, Jacquinii, Mt Hope Yellow, and Yellow Dancer. I'll add some Cordyline tomorrow, and then start on the next 10sqm beside it, and that'll be another 30sqm of lawn I won't have to mow, and more lovely flowers next Summer.
18.01.2022 My Winter project was the area around the pool. With what I can only say was a RIDICULOUS amount of physical labour for an old bastard like me to rip up all the broken concrete around the pool and replace with turf, now complete, I have to say I'm really happy with the result. The only thing I need now down on pool-deck level is a desk so I can do my work video meetings from there. Next job is the gardens around it. Progress to come.
16.01.2022 A late afternoon stroll around the gardens with beer in hand. I feel lost when I don't need to hose. :)
10.01.2022 While I've had a couple flowers on my Song Of India before, I've never seen it flowering like this. It's absolutely smothered. The other thing I like about this one is the leaf colour. Most are much lighter, with the outside of each leaf a cream or yellow, and green on the inner parts of the leaf. This one is much darker, and the outside of all the leaves is green. I'm not sure if it was a mutation, or a just a different variety, but all the cuttings I've taken have held true to this colouring.
10.01.2022 Looks like I'll have a few extra bananas coming up soon. Lucky I've given up the low-carb diet. The first photo is a Lady Finger, which I'll start taking hands off next week. The 2nd is another lady finger. There are 2 more small bunches on other lady fingers in other parts of the garden. The 3rd photo is the first flower I've had out of my Blue Java. It sat for 2 years in another part of the yard producing nothing, so I took a couple suckers up to this spot. And the last photo is the Dwarf Cavendish beside the pool. It's one of my favourites, as the bunches have up to 150 bananas, and you can cut off a hand at a time to ripen so easily, as it's about 4 feet off the ground. And the flavour & texture of the fruit is great.
05.01.2022 I've been noticing a lot of bandicoot holes in the garden again, after a long spell without them. I went down the back to do a bit of digging, and look what I found beside the new garden I was constructing? Mum took off straight away, but junior hung around under the trailer for a couple of photos. How cute is that? I've decided I should leave the area to let Mum come back and claim bub, so I guess there's nothing else for it but to come back inside for a beer and let them have the yard. :)
01.01.2022 Not much to do on a showery weekend like this, but to pick some flowers for the family room.
