It's an oppo...rtunity to share stories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom and Kalgoorlie... Toodyay was one of the oldest towns in Western Australia. It is located on the Avon River, 85 kilometres north-east of Perth in Ballardong Noongar country. Aboriginal people have been on the area for many thousands of years. The towns name is thought to be derived from Duidgee, meaning 'place of plenty'. Europeans settled into the area from the 1830s. The location of the first town site was subject to flooding, so in the 1850s a new site was established upstream, where a convict hiring depot was located. The new settlement was named Newcastle but changed to Toodyay in 1910, to avoid confusion with Newcastle in NSW. Newcastle Gaol was completed in 1864 and used as a state prison until 1909. In 1870, a steam-driven flour mill, Connor's Mill, was built. The mill was also used to generate electricity. The narrow gauge railway line arrived in 1887 and served the community until 1966 when it was replaced with a standard line. During the gold rush, farmers in the Toodyay district benefited from the need to supply provisions to the Goldfields and the town flourished. Today Toodyay is a charming historic town and very popular with day trippers fro Perth. It is home to many places of historical significance including the Toodyay Public Library, the old Toodyay Post Office and Fire Station. The museum inside Connor's Mill is well worth a visit and fascinating histories are told inside the Newcastle Gaol. We have been very mindful on keeping our staff and customers safe. We have been constantly adapting with changes to Government and health regulations at the same time trying to stay open to keep our 20 staff employed. With the recent lockdown of regional areas and the loss of our tourist and some wholesale trade we ha...ve had to make some changes to the way we do business.
