19.01.2022 #thecounselor I have a love hate relationship with this movie. I love almost everything about it, but I hate that it seems to be a misfire. All these great elements come together in what seems to be a messy way. I watched an extended cut on blu-ray, and it does seem better than the theatrical - although, that was seen ages ago. I really can't explain why it feels messy. Perhaps there is not enough understanding of why. The characters just don't have enough background. Why are they the way they are? - especially the Cameron Diaz character. Her actions just seem random, even though she had a plan. But why? Perhaps I have missed something. 09.01.2022 #AvengersEndgame . . . 11 years and 21 films have led to this one. I was quite anxious going into Infinity War (I get way too excited I feel sick - it is a known issue for me). This time was no different. Probably even more intense given what this actually is - the end of the main story line and possible demise of some beloved characters.... I won't go into spoiler territory. I never really do that in reviews anyway, but the experience of this film for the first time is even more sacrosanct. What can I say though - I absolutely adored this movie. After Infinity War, I wanted a different experience for Endgame. The Russo Brothers did say the two films would be different to each other, and they have delivered on that. There are plenty of laughs, as you would expect, but the emotional impact is definitely higher. The performances are next level. The cast really have done their absolute best to ensure these characters and their journeys are burned in our memories. I was teary on more than one occasion in this film - that's a testament to an amazing relationship that has been formed between the characters on screen and with the audience. At 3 hours long, there is absolutely no fat on the runtime. I could feel a minor need to pee at the 90 min mark, but there was just no opportunity where I felt I could afford to miss something. Thankfully, I wasnt desperate, so I could hold it. What plays out on screen is just so damn good, missing even a couple of mins would have felt like I cheated myself. There are some plot holes, so perhaps a longer cut would take care of that, but it is not really necessary. In the end, it is a staggering achievement in cinema. Closing out 11 years of story telling in a way that can only be considered as perfection. I really cant think of how it could have been done better.
